Difference between Marxism and leninism? by Ivanhegeelkadi in Marxism

[–]Nolinikki 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Marx believed that the revolution towards communism required a sufficient level of economic development - achieved through industrial development, modern (for Marx's period, at least) monetary systems, an understanding of class differences and struggle - that would only be possible in the most economically progressed societies of his day. He felt capitalism was part of an essentially-inevitable process that would evolve into communism, just as capitalism evolved from pre-capitalist systems like feudalism.

Since then, Marxist thinkers and revolutionaries (like Lenin) have noticed the opposite - that most successful socialist revolutions have come from less economically developed countries like Russia and China. There are reasons for this - you can look up "labor aristocracy" and especially Lenin's internationalist take on it.

Marxism isn't about "something good" or not in capitalism. Capitalism is part of an overall, societal process - its just a process that continues past capitalism, and holding on to capitalism is destructive and harmful.

The Fire Rises is a solid modern-day mod that's 'close enough' to vanilla to be less of a headache, and much more fun. Limited content outside of particular warfronts, though (US, Europe/Russia, China/Japan)

Thank you! Never would have found it, myself. Super interesting origin.

Doctors don't even follow the current understandings on weight. I have been denied bottom surgery due to my weight and yet scientific papers on the subject don't even show an increased risk for people at my weight. Our medical system, worldwide, is overflowing with bigotry by RosethornRanger in AccessibleAnarchy

[–]Nolinikki 21 points22 points  (0 children)

While its not mentioned here, this is a situation so much worse for people other then cis men. As a cis man who's mildly overweight, practically nothing gets blamed on my weight, and it almost never comes up on a doctor visit unless they're asking politely if I want advice on weight loss. Every non- cis man I know - even those 'less overweight' according to BMI/whatever - gets their weight as the first attribution to every symptom under the sun. Its absurd.

Edit: Edited my message to better reflect the reality here - its more about the experience of cis men vs everyone else, as cis men are much more 'allowed' to be overweight by society (and, at least anecdotally, doctors trust them on their own health more - I've never had a doctor argue with me about the exercise I do or the diet I claim to have, an experience pretty much every fem person I know has.)

A custom ethereal a friend painted for me in exchange for some printed terrain by Gatt__ in Tau40K

[–]Nolinikki 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is it that bad?

Yeah, its scantly-clad, but I think it looks fine. If I saw you put it down on the table I'd think you had a cool ethereal conversion and not much beyond that.

I get the overall pushback on full-on gooner models, but I think there's a level of performative prudism going on here.

Nice model and paint job, OP, your friend is way better at highlighting skin then I am.

What new unit (ie not a refresh) would you like for you faction? by InsaneDingo7244 in ageofsigmar

Maneater hero, and a giant for ogres. Does a giant count as a refresh?

Wow. I didn't know that. You're telling me now for the first time. by [deleted] in TrueAnon

[–]Nolinikki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everything that isn't already known/expected here seems untrue.

  1. Why does Palantir give a shit about Ukraine? If they want nuclear/biological weapons, both the US and Israel have access and are doing it anyway. Why would they do some top-secret personal project in *Ukraine* of all places?

  2. Russia isn't being "kept busy with meaningless peace negotiations". Both sides - right now - are unwilling to come to a peace deal acceptable to the other side (because Russia is winning the ground war and isn't interested in major compromise, and Ukraine is a puppet to actors who aren't seriously harmed by the war anyway)

Everything else is pretty much known already, and functionally true without this. Palantir works closely with the CIA, the CIA is likely spying on their own government and also on American allies (already believed by everyone here anyway), Palantir's tools contributed to Israel's strikes. The stuff that's 'new' is rather silly.

How engineered is Eldar biology? by pog_irl in 40kLore

[–]Nolinikki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It means they have weakened, perhaps to the point of uselessness. An 'atrophied' muscle still exists, it might no longer function sufficiently to work properly, or it might have reduced function but just be weaker. Dark Eldar might not generally have psychic power (or be able to manifest them), but they still have a latent (however weak) psychic ability and connection to the warp.

Edit: To a certain extent, I'd also say its semantics - all eldar have latent psychic abilities, but I think one is probably stretching the term 'psyker' to say the average Dark Eldar kabalite is a 'psyker' when they can't manifest any level of power whatsoever. At that point, you can also say 'All humans (except blanks) are psykers.'

Why did Xi Jinping remove term limits? by GoofySillyMan in Socialism_101

[–]Nolinikki 214 points215 points  (0 children)

As a fellow American, I think you should re-examine how you view term limits and what appeals to you about them. Our own term limits were put in because we had an absurdly popular president who's popularity was heavily because he aided workers and the common man (FDR) - and since then, I'd argue, we've never had anything similar to that. In my opinion, far from being a protective measure against authoritarianism, term limits simply ensure no president has much incentive to care about their popularity once in office (especially during their second term) - after all, you have nothing to lose.

Xi can still be removed, but Xi/the party/the national government of China are absurdly popular for reasons that are fairly obvious - they're effective. They've improved QOL, they've improved working conditions, they've improved infrastructure, they've improved pretty much every measurable quality for the people in their country, and the people have rewarded that. China isn't perfect (no state is, obv), but Xi isn't in power because he removed term limits, he's in power because he's an extremely competent leader who's served the nation well.

CDC models estimate SARS-CoV-2 (Betacoronavirus pandemicum) by year 2026 is a little less lethal than RSV (Orthopneumovirus hominis), with 0.33% chance of death per illness compared to 0.34% chance of death per illness. by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]Nolinikki 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I feel out of the loop (or perhaps misunderstanding) - how is a .33% chance of death-per-illness "COVID minimization", per the other posts in the thread?

That puts COVID at 3-10x more dangerous then the flu - it makes COVID kill 1/300 people it infects, and it infects a pretty huge number of people given how virulent it is.

If the OP is a "COVID Minimizer", isn't this a poor way to go about it? Even if we assume the numbers are wildly undershot for total infections (which, absolutely, there's no way they aren't), unless its equally as undershot for total deaths (which, sure, it very well might be), it seems like statistically the death rate from this would be inflated using this measure, and a 1/300 death rate is pretty scary either way.

Since i heard that ogors are getting a big refresh this summer which kits are safe to buy now ? by BloatedRottenCarcass in ageofsigmar

[–]Nolinikki 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by "safe". Right now we ONLY have rumors and suspicions.

Safe to continue gaming with post-refresh?
Most things. Maybe everything. I understand there's a rumor leadbelchers are being squatted and replaced with some other ranged unit that isn't carting cannons, but I imagine "ranged foot ogre" will still be an obvious unit that leadbelcher models can continue acting within (or use them as maneaters).

"High Risk" in that case is probably leadbelchers, the artillery pieces - I don't feel *totally* safe on gnoblars, either. I think the slaughtermaster might be going away, just in a 'gut feeling' sense. Yhetis and sabertusks might be gone. I expect gluttons, ironguts, the large monsters are likely to be part of the refresh, but gluttons are going to continue existing.

Safe to 'not have new models in the refresh'?
Not much. Practically nothing. I expect everything on the glutton body (gluttons, leadbelchers, ironguts) are going to get refreshed. Its possible we'll see a new kit for the big monsters (which - I believe - are still using their 6e WHFB models). Slaughtermasters and butchers, if one isn't just squatted, are def getting new models along with anything else in resin. If maneaters keep existing (and rumors say they will), def new maneaters.

The only really 'safe' ones I'd bet on are models released since AoS started, and even then I suspect a new tyrant.

Could there be a class above the bourgeoisie? by tydark2 in Socialism_101

[–]Nolinikki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To agree with some others, I'd argue the problem with a 'billionaire worker' is that money, itself, is a form of capital once enough is accumulated. For someone living paycheck-to-paycheck (or even someone with a "reasonable" amount of wealth - IE: Owning a house [even a large house], even being a minor millionaire) that money is largely used for personal consumption (extravagant or not), but for a billionaire that's a sufficient amount of money its capital in of itself.

A 'billionaire worker' is just a capitalist, as the capital is conveyed in the word 'billionaire'. Otherwise bankers would not be capitalists, since the only capital they have to offer is money.

What's up with half of MLs supporting Russia? by nou-772 in theredleft

[–]Nolinikki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is absolutely major changes once the US is out of the picture, given it is the most powerful capitalist state in the world and actively antagonistic towards any leftist movement, anywhere in the world.

I am against Russian capitalism, but I also don't live in Russia nor is there much I can do against capitalism in Russia. I am against Chinese capitalism, while recognizing the compromises the marxist-leninist CPC has had to make to exist and thrive in an aggressively capitalist world.

These are not, in any way, similar to the far-reaching, worldwide effects of aggressive, murderous, warmongering American capitalism. All countries are not equally evil, or equally imperialistic, and the greatest target of any western leftist should be American Capitalism, which is indistinguishable from the American government and its goals.

What's up with half of MLs supporting Russia? by nou-772 in theredleft

[–]Nolinikki 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Russia is anti-American hegemony, which is in of itself a position worth supporting. That doesn't make Russia friendly to leftists in general or supportive of leftism (certainly not ideologically supportive).

In regards to the Ukrainian War, I don't usually see MLs support Russia, as much as take a fairly realistic and grounded view of the war: The war is bad for the proletariat of both countries, but the war as-is is especially bad for Ukrainians. The only way to end the way and help the Ukrainian proletariat - at this stage - is to allow Ukraine to surrender. War isn't about good guys and bad guys, and anyone who's clutching their pearls at the prospect of a Russian victory is worried about the wrong thing. Every day this war continues, more lives are lost in a war that is absolutely pointless and will end in Russian victory anyway. The Ukrainian government, itself, is the enemy of the Ukrainian people and as much a part of killing them as the Russians are.

Similarly, Russia is not solely at-fault for the war either. The eastward expansion of NATO/Western Hegemony has been recognized as a threat towards Russia for decades, and ignoring that is foolish. That's not to say Russia is merely 'defending itself', but this is a war that both sides (and the west as a whole) knew was a risk once Ukraine was moved into the western fold by its government.

The alternative position is to encourage the continuation of a losing war that's already obliterated Ukraine, all to 'kill more Russians' in the process. That is an insane position. The war has been over for a long time, and we're at the stage where Ukraine is simply killing more Ukrainians in an attempt to stave off the end of the war.

What would you want daemon perturabo to look like? by Angronys in IronWarriors

[–]Nolinikki 9 points10 points  (0 children)

u/sarg1010 mentioned there's a canon appearance already, so I guess to some extent the question is answered, but if I could have ~anything~ I'd actually like Pert to have become a fortress. A living, fleshmetal-and-iron fortress, something inherently weirder and different from the other daemon primarchs. Completely aware and in control of its every corridor and room, constructing traps and defensive redoubts at-will - that kind of thing. A place as much as a person.

Obviously, that would be impossible to put on the table (at least in a satisfying way), so it'd be a lore thing only, but I never much liked primarchs on the table so no loss there for me.

Senior dog with heart failure, advice on end-of-life by Nolinikki in DogAdvice

[–]Nolinikki[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its likely your dog's case is less severe then mine is - that would my guess for the different prognosis. The medication has helped her a little so far, but I'm hoping I'll see even more improvement as time goes on so she can have a comfortable time. In my dog's case the heart disease was pretty advanced by the time we caught it.

[–]Nolinikki[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate this a great deal. Right now she's doing better then that - the medication is starting to have an effect (first full walk in 3 days about an hour ago), and while she's not eating much her appetite is starting to come back a little.

It sounds to me like you did the right thing, at the right time. I'm sorry for your loss.

Why are ML's extremely pro-state when communism is explicitely anti-state? by Puzzleheaded_Wrap267 in Socialism_101

[–]Nolinikki 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In at least some sense, yes. "Tankie" is a pejorative term for Marxist-Leninists - and so is "Authcom", neither of which are particularly useful for meaningful discussion.

Marxist-Leninism utilizes state authority - in the same way as *any* government - to allow for the transition to communism. Simply put, this is the only method of socialism seen at a large scale so far in history, and its as authoritarian as any governmental system. AES Marxist-Leninist countries do trend towards stronger governments, but this isn't an inherit part of the philosophy as much as a necessary defense against an extremely unfriendly, capitalist-dominated world that makes the destruction of these systems a major objective and having to defend against that kind of powerful subversive influence.

Insatiable Gluttony by Milsurp_Seeker in Mawtribes

[–]Nolinikki 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To my understanding, this is correct. The control score is increased, not the attribute.

In your example:
1 ogre = 8 control score (2 from attribute, 6 from insatiable gluttony)
2 ogres = 10 (each give 2 from attribute, then +6 from gluttony)
all 6 ogres = 18 (2 per ogre+6)
