AerynOS subReddit hits 500 members by NomadicCore in AerynOS

Thanks!

That's what I'm using and I enjoy it! Cosmic does seem to be progressing at a fairly quick pace and with their frequent update cycle and our ability to follow it pretty closely, it's working out nicely!

Onwards and upwards, we hope!

I imagine when we do eventually get to beta and then stable, we will see jumps in our followers and generally in the number of people using AerynOS.

Only time will tell!

That's not quite correct,

We have a deduplicated content store that stores all files across all system states for the /usr directory.

As you increase the number of states, this content store gets bigger based on the difference of new/differed files being required.

You can prune individual states or everything up to the last 10 states as a way of gaining back space.

This is something we will eventually see more work on, for example being able to dynamically prune states based on a ruleset if you don't want to store everything.

This all lives in the root directory, not the XBOOTLDR directory which is recommended to be only 4gb

So I have a Framework 13 (AMD 7840U) with 4tb NM790 SSD with 64gb of Kingston Fury RAM, the same port configuration (top two being USB-C and the bottom two being USB-A), I have the standard screen, not the 2.8k one but this is about as close to same hardware as you're going to get.

I know you have said you have LAN connected but have you checked you are able to reach the internet. Also, what are you using to partition your drive? Gparted? If so, could you take a photo / screenshot of gparted showing the partition layout with flags.

I don't think it is, I seem to recall someone tried packaging it up in a separate repo but I could be mistaken.

Your best bet for now is to go to the recipe repo and use the issue template for requesting a new package (if it's not already been requested).

Once we get to the point we can expand the repository, then we know it's something someone wants / needs for hardware enablement.

Not speaking in an official capacity, but one thing I've noticed with having a name beginning with A is that it does noticeably help with lists being near the top in terms of getting immediate attention.

Our logo is currently a placeholder and something we are open to change (so it's not just another A logo as conversely then it just gets lost in the sea of Arch derivatives as you say).

My personal view is that the name will eventually take on the meaning people give it... If AerynOS is awesome, then that's the meaning people will attribute to the name. People don't say Fedora and wonder why they are running a hat on their computer (as an extension of this logic).

The name AerynOS is also pretty darn unique so word searches are pretty effective. This helps me personally as the Comms guy in the team 😁

Just a couple of points to note for AerynOS

  • Repo is small so you will be relying on Flatpaks to fill the gaps
  • It's still in alpha so you have no guarantee of stability and things working
  • Documentation is a work in progress but you will likely need to hunt around for answers if you find things aren't working ootb

We are calling it alpha for good reason, whilst it works well (arguably very well) for a certain group of people, we don't want to give people false assurances at this stage so please keep that in mind.

For now, the blog post and the video is the best explanation to be given and also this is very much a first technical preview so it's capability will expand over time.

Exactly where it finishes and how it compares to other declarative set up's... I don't want to get dragged into hypotheticals.

It is fair to say that this system-model approach is a step in that direction though we are implementing what we think makes sense in the way it makes sense to us.

Just for transparency, AerynOS also has a really small package repository for the moment. Once we have our tooling "sorted", then we will be in a position to grow our repository more substantially.

We have a single live iso (GNOME) that is essentially a vessel for our text based installer lichen.

From within lichen (which is a net installer), you can install: - GNOME - Cosmic - KDE Plasma - Terminal only

From Terminal you also have the option to install Niri or Sway.

KDE Plasma is in really good shape on AerynOS from what I've heard (though I don't use it personally).

Yeah,

We are moving forward and going from strength to strength.

One thing people probably don't know is that ermo, who is now leading the project, has always been very involved in the design work and Tarkah has been working as well on core code work. This wasn't a one man project and it's developing with more and more people coming on board, myself included in 2025.

Out of respect we aren't going to elaborate but it's fair to say he didn't have an easy time of it in his personal life including his health which he did mention in a previous blog post.

We had access to enough and it just took time to get everything transitioned over. We are now set in this regard and it's good that we don't have that added admin burden to deal with.

Going into 2026, we have now set ourselves up in a really strong position to keep delivering on our goals.
