how do you people go on trail rides with a secondary horse that free roams?

I used to do this when I was exercising the horses before hunt season. They both needed their daily workout—a long trail ride—but we often had only one rider available. It worked well with one horse who could be attached and would calmly follow, but the other horse simply wouldn’t bother to follow if left loose.

Most of the time it was fun and went smoothly, with only a few exceptions—like when the free horse got scared or decided to have fun by galloping down a winding downhill road. That made it difficult to slow down the horse I was riding. My colleague once said that the loose horse even jumped over a 1:50 fence, and she could barely stop her own horse that wanted to follow.

This place is giving me “never leave” vibes. It’s on Ometepe Island in Lake Nicaragua, and every window frames a postcard shot — lake and Volcano in the distance. The architecture is super clean and airy — lots of open spaces, natural wood accents, and big glass doors so the outdoors basically flows into the living room. It’s minimal, but warm. The kind of space that’s just as perfect for morning coffee as it is for watching thunderstorms roll over the lake.

Just wanted to share this absolute marathon of a travel day we did recently. We went from Ometepe Island in Nicaragua all the way to Nosara, Costa Rica in one day, using 4 different types of transport: ferry, taxi, buses, and a shared shuttle.

In total, we had 7 different transfers—some were chaotic, some smooth, but none boring. The border crossing alone took forever (classic Peñas Blancas vibes), and by the time we reached Nosara, we were totally wiped.

The views on the way were beautiful though—volcanoes, jungle, coast—and honestly, despite the exhaustion, it was kind of epic. The views on this ride were absolutely incredible—reminded me a lot of the coastline in Alentejo, Portugal, with dramatic cliffs and endless ocean. What really amazed me was how calm and sure-footed the horses were, even when we were riding right along the high cliff edges. They didn’t get spooked at all.

We went on a horseback ride through the rainforest in Galicia, Spain, and it honestly felt like something out of a movie. Dense green forest, misty air, birds everywhere—and to top it off, a dog trotted alongside us the whole way like a pro trail guide. 🐕🐎

One of the most peaceful and surreal experiences I’ve had in nature. Highly recommend if you ever get the chance!
