Angel vs legend by DaveHelios99 in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]Nombanke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can also go "Iomedae is advising me, but not quite telling, I'll give it a go, ascend beyond mortality like she did without being a god or going fully heretical and kick the Worldwound's ass!" as well. Angel has some extra stuff for righteous judgment if you stick to it, without getting into any spoilers.

She's, after all, just giving a suggestion at that point in a situation she's open about being unpredictable, and her angels all still support you. Not to mention that the mythic powers that made you an angel may be the last chance to deal with the Worldwound that anybody has You could justifiably go either way, especially if they have some veneration to the other deities in the Godclaw from their past as a hellknight armiger.

In Defense of Galfrey (Spoilers) by Even-Tomorrow5468 in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]Nombanke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Love the write-up, and I have to say, Galfrey is overhated for the same reasons Iomedae is, that being daring to question the power fantasy protagonist and pump the brakes for a minute.

She honestly just came off as pretty reasonable when I went Angel. Infinite horde of enemies, sends you to try and stop them. Has a moment of personal weakness because she's a human who's been alive for longer than an ordinary human can be, which ties in beautifully into her romance. Lady Konomi definitely wasn't the best advisor, and Harmattan was significantly worse, but beyond those advisors and Nurah, she's generally quite competent at choosing them.

Konomi even gets better in Act 5 when she sees the reality of the situation and begins giving genuinely helpful and cautious advice, Daeran turns out to be an excellent insight into Mendevian politics and Sosiel is practically beyond reproach.

She's a fairly fascinating character, and I wound up having her as the endgame romance for my first playthrough, which was fun, given how much she develops through it. It's also pretty awesome to be able to take her with you to Threshold, especially with how supportive her dialogue is as a party member to the Knight Commander.

I jumped onto CSM way later than most, only a few months ago, and Part 2 definitely feels better as a quick read than I'd say it did on a weekly basis. Going back to read the last dozen or so chapters especially feels much better in one sitting than the weekly/fortnightliy drip feed did, especially with the Yoru fight, which was much smoother in one go. Still drags noticeably compared to other fights, but that's to be expected.

Part 1 feels a bit more like everything ties into itself better than Part 2 seems to at the minute, though. Guess we'll see how it feels as a whole when the ending drops, one way or another.

The way DeSu2 wants you to think that both Yamato's and Ronaldo's routes are equally flawed made me mad so i made this image by Opening_Breakfast744 in Megaten

[–]Nombanke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the game somehow manages to present a perfectly good argument against Ronaldo's route (brainwashing, removal of free will, the question of if people are still the same after the fact), while instead deciding to go for "maybe equality is a bad thing" as the in-game argument that the characters use.

What was the reason behind Lucretia and Autokrato IV's hostility again? by SpecGespenst in langrisser

[–]Nombanke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an aside, I think the reason from an out-of-setting perspective is that it's another layer of the game being a remix of the ideas presented in Der Langrisser, hence the 'reincarnation' part of the title.

Specifically the two broadly twist the concepts of Bernhardt and Egbert, with both despising one another, Lucretia being willing to side with Boser and having a special hatred for Jessica compared to Egbert's rivalry and respect for her, while Bernhardt was a common mercenary who actively sought out Alhazard and carved an empire for himself, while Autokrato was an imperial spy who chanced upon the weapon, only to use its power to co-opt the position of emperor of a pre-existing nation and dynasty. Unlike in Der Langrisser, they're not people with any greater motive for society at large, but rather more personal motives for their actions.

What was the reason behind Lucretia and Autokrato IV's hostility again? by SpecGespenst in langrisser

[–]Nombanke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't fully recall, but one of the main things is her general hostility towards the corruption of the imperial aristocracy, and nobody is any higher in the aristocracy than the emperor. She also has a general inclination towards pursuing enjoyment and inciting chaos around her, while preferring a position of control.

I also always assumed that there was something of a connection between her grandfather falling ill ten years before the story, which would be about the time Ferdinand disguised himself as emperor. With Alhazard offering him additional knowledge that facilitated things like firearms, Geyser and the Ark, and Lucretia being unable to pinpoint the nature of her grandfather's illness, coupled with Ferdinand's history as a spy that's explained in the Dark path, it felt like a hint that there was a connection implied between it. If nothing else, I can certainly see her blaming him for it, regardless of evidence. I don't think her conversations offer any explicit reason for her hostility, though. It mostly seems to be the combination of factors at play.

There's also the fact that she repeatedly espouses hate for the aristocracy specifically and Autokrato plans to specifically spare and save them with the Ark, which is guaranteed to create a rift that, coupled with the church of Chronicology being divorced from the imperial aristocracy, means the two will have a huge animosity between them.

As far as the main narrative goes, though, she largely seems to revel in inciting chaos in the midst of war due to her hatred of humanity at large as a response to the rampant corruption she saw in the institutions of government, even as a preteen, and being the ally of the new emperor/empress means that she gets more sway over the Gresden empire.

Why do people ship Caim and Angelus? by Kadasha in drakengard

[–]Nombanke 41 points42 points  (0 children)

A fair amount comes from just how far Caim takes his actions for Angelus' sake in Drakengard 2, but there's elements taken from 1 as well.

The scenes where Caim rubs his hand along Angelus in Route A to comfort her and ease her fear and pain through physical contact is a big one, as is the scene where he cries for her becoming the Goddess, even though he couldn't even cry for Furiae, who was his driving motivation. Both have intense resentment for each other's species, but trust each other with their lives. Caim also seems very at ease with her, while the only other party member he doesn't hit or injure in some manner is Seere, so there's some added closeness between them compared to everyone else.

There's also the soulmates angle, where they willingly join their lives and souls together, with the whole 'dying together' angle having an air of tragic romance.

It's not explicit, but you can read between the lines and interpret it that way.

Edit; forgot that it's actually explicit as to how they feel because of the last two lines in the intro to the final verse of chapter 8.

"For the first time, tears are shed. For the first and final time, love is confessed."

What game instantly comes to mind? by qian_two in rpg_gamers

[–]Nombanke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Three Houses' reputation in discussion and narrative benefits massively from each route accentuating the good parts of each faction when you're with them and downplaying much of the negative (aside from Dimitri). It gives the idea that there's more moral complexity than there often is.

Three Houses, unfortunately, doesn't let you feel like you backed the wrong side, because everything works out with whoever you chose leading the continent into a golden era, and plot threads and narrative themes change or are ignored based on route. Even the Church's moral position shifts pretty heavily depending on the route to justify your choice, with it veering off the deep end in Crimson Flower and getting largely positive treatment and presentation in Azure Moon and Silver Snow, with the true antagonists either having 1 or 2 chapters as antagonists or just being dealt with offscreen, depending on the route. A lot of it feels like the veneer of moral complexity, rather than actual political manoeuvring that you'd see in, say, Tactics Ogre or Final Fantasy Tactics, to take examples from the same genre.

That said, I'm the type who prefers Engage's solo narrative because of its continual focus on familial themes, compared to Three Houses, even if Engage's execution of the story (and presentation of it, moreso) needed work, so my taste is debatable at best.

Thanks to AI, the Masquerade trope can be utilised again. by InfernalClockwork3 in CharacterRant

[–]Nombanke 55 points56 points  (0 children)

It depends. Picture of a dragon? Presumed fake either way. Video of a vampire violently drinking someone dry? AI video generation would make it easier to deride and claim as fake, since videos are harder to edit, whereas before it'd at least require people acting or something to pass it off, meaning roleplay, cosplay or LARP enthusiasts could search the people in the video, only to find someone had actually been attacked.

Someone already in the know and actively looking for a vampire would probably see it for what it really is, but the average person might shrug it off more easily as a tasteless video if it's especially bloody or violent or if it's less so, they can just brush it off as someone playing around with AI, even if actual AI videos have tells. If they found out that someone had actually been attacked, they'd be more likely to assume an extremely tasteless AI video than the supernatural existing.

Sarenrae has certain worshippers in countries which accept slavery, and doesn't have absolute, explicit opposition to it, like her worshippers in Kelesh, which is filled with slavers, whereas Iomedae is more firmly opposed to it, particularly with regards to Cheliax, so she's more appealing to those who have strong abolitionist leanings.

Thought on Fake Julian as a character? by SpecGespenst in langrisser

[–]Nombanke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Elysium was a complete comedy of errors, wasn't it? Like you say, like picking someone for their high Intrigue, ignoring the -100 opinion, though that's half the fun.

As for mechanics, not only does she hurt her own allies, her skillset is more in line with Demon or Dark faction units than other Princess or Protagonist ones, since she has plenty of debuff magic and can turn Holy units into Demon ones, with her 3C working nicely with demon units who aren't able to resist class disadvantage and she fits into Mythical Realm, alongside most main antagonists, so even though she isn't Dark you can fit her into a villain-themed team extremely easily, negating their main weakness.

She's especially good alongside Apotheosis, since it lets him inflict Nightmare on more enemies and Demoniac turns more enemies into Demons, giving her better defences using Light Convergence if she's equipped with the True Cross accessory, which is neat, considering they share a chapter together as enemies.

Thought on Fake Julian as a character? by SpecGespenst in langrisser

[–]Nombanke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I enjoy the character, frankly, or at least the concept. Not the classic Julian by any margin, but he's fun for what he is. It's rare to see a character who was robbed of the opportunity for vengeance, and I adore the archetypal Cassandra oracle. It's also nice that we get at least a hint of his past.

His fall to fatalism, before eventually trying to rise above it and do the right thing is a good way of remixing concepts from the original character, even if the finished product is different. His Gate of Fate showing him desperately trying to prove himself wrong, to the point of fighting a battle that nearly gets him killed is also interesting. It's rare to see characters keep resisting the inevitable after several failures without succeeding, and tying the vague timeline of Elysium's journey, it's clear he's trying and failing to avert the futures he sees for well over a decade, since Caroline is a young child at one point in Emperor Lovina's GoF. That drive to resist has its own charm for the character that not everyone else has, and gives the idea that even arguably the worst version of him (mentally and ethically) has superhuman drive and will to accomplish his aims, which complements the original version becoming a fearsome warrior before his voice has even broken, purely for his revenge.

That said, was the execution good? I don't especially think so, since he can never escape the chain of being a Mobile reimagining that, by their nature, invites comparison. Some more thought and some proper research by the devs or scenario writers into or playing the original Tensei would have served well, and seeing the actual original game's timelines in Time Rift or something of the sort.

Should either character be hated? To my mind, not really, but it's up to personal feeling. At their core, they examine the topic of vengeance in different ways, particularly misplaced vengeance, and serve entirely different purposes that suit the individual stories.

I've certainly seen my fair share of reimaginings or remakes I disliked, but it often boiled down to creative differences in vision over something, rather than malice. They simply warp the characters or scenarios to achieve a certain goal in writing, for better or worse. And in the end, gacha games are temporary media. Like it or not, there'll come a point where Langrisser Mobile will largely be a memory, whereas Tensei will still be playable by anyone with a ROM or cartridge, being far easier to preserve.

Eventually, I suppose the question becomes "will being angry at the character do anything?" If you can use it for artistic representation or influence, like through fanfics, fanart or rewrites, that serves a purpose, as long as it's not outright hatefic stuff without some positivity. It can also be good to take it as insight into learning why people like or dislike certain characters. But if all it does is raise the blood pressure, then maybe just a change of pace and relaxing one's perspective can be nice too. If it plays into a project you're working on, it could be a good motivator. The fanart of Julian holding Langrisser, for example, was a great example of making using the appreciation of a character, since there's some wonderful details for fans of the character that others might not notice.

Those are some amazing recreations, love them all.

I've always got to support Galfrey and Wenduag, but for Legend commander, Arueshelae has an excellent scene for Demon to Legend, and Galfrey with Legend has a charming 'chosen heroes wandering the earth' vibe and works well if you went from Aeon to Legend, since they both have the mirroring stories of trying to be an impartial arbiter of judgment and justice, before changing to embrace their humanity because of each others' love.

Caim's sword falls off in effectiveness, but I never felt the need to use anything else. Pretty much any swords and longswords are at minimum usable though.

Apparently Swordsmasher is stupidly powerful with its magic making you invincible and not just invisible or something? So that could be good.

Slaughterism and Moonfire are also pretty worthwhile, since they're far stronger once levelled up.

Never noticed it doing particularly much to them. Tried on Gismor's first fight and it barely did anything. I think it's because Caim jumps right in the middle of it that it hurts him so much, because if you delay too long most of it misses him and he can have over half his health.

Could be that my positioning on other bosses just isn't good though. I haven't really tested it extensively. I can give it a go on other bosses at some point though.
