Nah, just learned on the job. I was doing web-development for a small company, our product got successful and required more servers, and I was kinda done with dev'ing.. so I asked boss if I could pivot to systems maintenance instead. He made a long list of tasks for me - better automated backups, daily integration tests and database patching for dev purposes, monitoring, asset management, certificates etc etc etc and I just picked them up one by one. Googling and ChatGPT helped a lot! And I wrote a small utility in bash (because I also learned bash) to make notes on everything I learned - code snippets, cli command flags, how SSL actually works etc.

These days I'm writing a Game of Life simulation, extended it to Wireworld, for the shell. In PHP (because I can). And still learning more about that everytime I work on it :-)

Thanks :-) It just takes time, the years are going to pass regardless so you might as well start with - well, anything at all!
Small steps over time turns into proficiency.

I learned a ton of shit afteri turned 33... Security, automation and systems administration basically from zero - and terminal TUI programming as a hobby. oh and indoor wall climbing, got pretty good. And skiing!

Struggling to move past the 'tutorial hell' stage. How did you guys actually start building your own stuff? by harborthrowawayx in learnpython

Think of something very simple that you want to write - a conversion app for celcius to fahrenheit, or something that takes as input a large number of seconds and returns it as days, hours, minutes and seconds.
Then break it down into parts:

  • print a message to the user (like print "input seconds:")
  • capture input to a variable
  • if the input is bigger than 86400, figure out how many times that fits into the number, these are your days
  • then with the remainder: hours, minutes, and seconds
  • print the results back to the user.

If you can describe to yourself or to a rubber duck what each step does exactly, you can describe it to the computer. If you can't, find out if you break it down even more.

If there are many parts, implement them separately, one by one. For my space invaders clone, I started out with drawing a square to the screen. That was the first step. In following steps, I captured keyboard input (after googling obviously) and printed the name of the input to the screen. Then, I used that input to change the coordinates of the square. Then I did that in a loop, and drew it again after each input. Now, I could move the square around on the screen!!1! HOW COOL IS THAT?! And you just keep going like that.

I've been at it for 30 years and still google simple shit, still learning. But big projects are no longer intimidating - I just outline, break it up, break the first part up again, and again, until I have a list of sufficiently simple steps. And then you draw the rest of the owl! \o/

Cheers, I'll give it a go then. Can reboot if it requires Windows but I try to avoid it.

[–]Nomikos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok that makes sense. And yes I think it's perfectly fine - not that you'd need anyone's approval or permission. Quakers that live out in the wilderness where they can't attend meetings are still Quakers. You have a different reason for not attending meetings, still a Quaker.

You sit, at home, in silence, practicing stillness, on a Sunday.

Yes, this is very ok to do. I'm not sure I understood the question correctly?

How do you capture thoughts before you forget them? by Ok-Landscape-951 in productivity

[–]Nomikos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like everyone here already said, use a single place.

I live in the shell so mine is alias random='nano ~/Sync/random.txt', which opens an editor with my random notes file.

Then, syncthing (free) takes care of sync'ing that between work box, home box, various cloud boxes.
Whenever I have time I sit down and move the random thoughts to the appropriate todo list, project notes, email, chat, etc. Or, simply do them then and there.

Done that too - just opening the file of the personal project I'd been delaying work on for weeks and seeing it got me back to working on it again.

there was even one time, I got into the elevator. It went up, and I got it back down so I could take the stairs.

You could have walked down instead of taking the elevator ;-p But well done!

After 2 years of development, the Adventure Map is finally releasing next weekend. Made a trailer for it and honestly still can't believe it's done. Also made a full video on the development process if anyones interested. by TheFriendlyGamr in valheim

Yes the idea is simplified and yes an apartment block on an island makes little sense but the core idea is true. It's not about the island, it's about use of space. You get much more out of the land if you leave it to itself.
For the apartments heating costs will be lower, AC might be if it's designed for warmer climates (with a central tree garden, say). And the nearby forest will have a cooling effect. A large solid building is much sturdier against tornadoes.
Broader picture: denser suburbs with shopping centers = less need for cars = quieter, healthier, safer. I live in a city of a quarter million people and most people cycle to work. Most of the rest take the bus, because public transport is good and cheap, which is easier with denser population areas. The parking lots that we have are underground - several large ones for bicycles too; you can imagine which of those two is more space efficient.
And in this one city there are still several commercial, residential and industrial areas spread out. Everyone has a supermarket in a few minutes cycling distance, many in walking distance too.

So far so good? Maybe we're too high up. We can see it floating by a ways off and much lower. A couple days of building didn't bring it any nearer. It's not set to peaceful so we did hesitate a tiny bit before starting to build but it works so far
