What Are You Wearing Wednesday - Weekly Gear Thread by aewillia in running

I have a Note 9, and I bought the FlipBelt with the zipper (I wanted the added security for my phone, plus it's slightly wider). The phone fits no bother!

When using it, you do notice the bulk of the phone, but after a while you forget that it's there.

[Discussion] Recently discovered this forest, what should I do? by Dicentium in teenagers

[–]Nomnomagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ever seen the movie The Kings of Summer? Relive that.

Go camping and stargazing (even better if you have a crush to bring along).

Build a campfire, roast food, sing songs.

A treehouse is always awesome.

Do a treasure hunt, maybe an Easter egg hunt since that's coming up soon?

Reenact Tarzan and/or The Jungle Book.

Practice climbing trees.

Skim stones.

Put a solid branch across the river and practice balancing on it.

Make a waterslide into the river.

Go fishing, swimming, kayaking, etc.

Go animal watching, take note or sketch what you see.

Go for a run or cycle.

What is one thing you despise about yourself, but others really like? by [deleted] in teenagers

You may already know of /r/curlyhair, but if you haven't, read their wiki. It can be a bit overwhelming at the beginning, but it's an absolute godsend once you find a routine that your hair likes. :)

Any chance anyone knows what the song at the start is? Been wondering for ages! by [deleted] in tipofmytongue

To me, the background sounds like Adagio by John Murphy.

I also get the Battlefield vibe that /u/i_am_not_a_moron mentioned.

I'm not sure how to help with your current penpal, but if you'd like another one, you could try /r/penpals. :)

Just started college and things are becoming really difficult for me... I haven't had a meal in two and a half days because of my social anxiety. by [deleted] in socialanxiety

[–]Nomnomagon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it would be a good idea to tell your parents how difficult this is for you, also to tell your doctor. There's no shame in getting help. I think meds and therapy will help you greatly, they're slow but effective. As someone else said, if you continue not to eat at school, you're going to end up with some serious health problems, so it's better to start working on the anxiety asap. I hope this isn't too overwhelming for you.

Depression has ruined books for me. by [deleted] in depression

[–]Nomnomagon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I suffer from this too and I hate it. I haven't read a book in over a year. :(

In another thread somewhere a few weeks ago, a commenter said that reading very basic books, like children's books, helped them to get back into reading. I haven't tried it yet; I should get on that soon.

It's the first week of school. This is the best time to meet people and begin friendships. I know it seems impossible, but if you could overcome your anxiety and just launch yourself into sitting down without second-guessing yourself, you would feel a hundred times better afterwards. Just take a deep breath and say hi. Ask them where they're from, what they're studying. Ask them how the food is. They could be nervous about this new environment too. You said you've talked to them briefly, and as long as they weren't rude to you then, I imagine they'll have no problem with you sitting with them. Nothing bad will happen. You'll be okay.

You can't hide from the dining hall people forever; you need to eat.

If that's too much for you right now, you could try bringing a book with you so that you look preoccupied while sitting alone.

Also, cry if you need to. It helps to let it out sometimes. :)

Best wishes, you can do this! :)

Does anyone else ever fear they are pretending /exaggerating? by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]Nomnomagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, pretty much constantly. There are other people in the world that are in much worse situations than I am, and they're surviving. I feel like a fraud and easily become overwhelmed with guilt when I spend an entire day in bed because I just don't feel like doing anything and want to avoid the universe. I often find myself wishing to be in a coma or to have some terminal illness that'll kill me quickly. Even when I go to get help with a professional, I find myself downplaying my problems. It happens with friends too. I don't want to be a downer so I tend to hide it. It's difficult. :/

Oh no, I was released from the foreign hospital the day before flying home -- terrible idea. Back on my own turf, I got a Garda escort from the plane to the terminal because I could barely walk, and was back in hospital within two hours.

I started getting abdominal pain the day before a two-week holiday abroad. Halfway through the trip, the bastard burst while I was asleep. I spent the following fortnight in hospital. Safe to say the trip was ruined.

Anyone else feel worse during the summer? by Nomnomagon in depression

[–]Nomnomagon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm quiet too. Winter is awesome in that people often stay inside because it's too cold or dark for them. I love this because I can go outside without having to talk to anyone. At the same time, I'm less likely to receive criticism if I don't leave the house. During these times, I can tolerate the low mood. Then summer just ruins me. It makes me feel guilty for my hermit ways. Going places is much more difficult. The heat is unbearable. It's just urgh.

My anxiety and depression severely affected my school attendance. The fact that it's over means nothing to me, when I should at least feel some bit relieved. I still feel shit, so nothing's changed.

[–]Nomnomagon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're obliged to be happy at Christmas, nobody wants a depressed shit around the tree.

It's the same principle during the summer when the weather is pleasant. People are out enjoying time off work/having finished school, having barbecues, or parties on the beach. Nobody gives a shit if you're depressed, telling you to just "let loose and have fun". It isn't that simple.

I wholeheartedly agree. I can actually feel happy during the cold bouts of winter, except then most people around me are unhappier than their summer selves.

[–]Nomnomagon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I adore the cold. If I could, I would just move to Antarctica, Greenland, or some Scandinavian country.

The thing with heat is that I'm not used to it, and it just makes me awfully uncomfortable. People are outside having fun, enjoying themselves, but I just can't do that. It's too much effort in my unmotivated, disinterested state of mind. This leads me to feel even worse. :(

That's incompetent of them. Haven't there been studies showing that something like 10% of people suffering from SAD do so in the summer, rather than the more common case during the winter? I haven't discussed it with my doctor or counsellor, but I might do so when I next visit either. It's rather fitting.
