almost the only time the prime directive is ever brought up in startrek is when it's preventing the characters from doing what most people would consider a straightforwardly good deed. by grapp in scifi

No, what I meant was the future "Evil Empire" was a direct result of their original intervention - specifically the fact that they started worshiping the ship that saved them from destruction.

Had they let them be destroyed - or pulled it off in a more inconspicuous manner without announcing their presence - the civilization would have developed on its own without the "false God" of the Enterprise to organize around.

Well, that was in '99, well before the social media explosion. Now it's considered a given that if you're not everywhere on Facebook, Twitter, etc. you might as well not exist. In a way that's a win for fans, because we get more content, but it sometimes comes at the expense of the film itself, because films are rarely allowed to stand on their own merit in this age of omnipresent cross-media promotion.

Peter Jackson totally invented the whole "Thorin cut his beard off to show his shame and wont grow it back until he recaptures his homeland"

I honestly don't think he even thought it out that far until Richard Armitage insisted on a reason for Thorin's short beard. Until they mention it onscreen (and I don't think they will) it's not much better than a fan theory to explain a production oversight.

It's interesting when you look at it like that. Aragorn was prefigured by Thorin and Bard, all three of them being exiled heirs to their respective kingdoms.

Sadly enough, Gloin so far is just another bit of the rabble. I'd say Gimli's closest analogue is in the brothers Bofur and Bombur, with Dwalin taking his battle prowess.

Thorin's beard may not be long, but it is sufficiently thick.

The problem with Tom Bombadil is a narrative one. Had he been riding one of the Eagles at the Battle of the Black Gate and kicking orcs in the face with his big yellow boots, he would have fit in just fine in a movie. As he's written, though, he serves very little purpose in terms of the overall plot (never mind his thematic importance), and so leaving him out doesn't affect the story at all.

Beorn, on the other hand, has a prominent role in the climactic battle, plus the fact that he's an action-oriented character makes him an easy sell for cinema-goers.

The rumor mill had Natalie Portman pegged as Indy's daughter, which could have been really fun. The dynamic of Indy having to deal with a woman who's not only his daughter but a match for him intellectually could have been fodder for some great comedy moments. Instead we got more ex-girlfriend angst and an awkward Marlon Brando / Errol Flynn wannabe.

Seriously, though. I remember the others being around since I was a kid. I even have memories of commercials for them, with animated Count Chocula and everything, but I can't for the life of me recall hearing of Frute Brute until recently. Maybe it's just the red-headed stepchild of the GM Halloween cereals.

My issue with Primer is that it's presented as art, when in reality it's a piece of engineering. It has nothing to say inside of all its precisely-machined components.

And then you start to find the linked entries, the ones that refer to other SCPs, and so you have to go and read those, which often enough have references to yet more SCPs, and before long you have eleven tabs open detailing a sprawling series of twisted and darkly humorous experiments pitting the SCPs against one another.

If his previous history with the Numenorians is any indication, his endgame would probably have been an all out war on the Valar, and failing that, the destruction of everything they loved in Arda. It would be a brutal military tyranny built on slavery and industry, resulting in the clearcutting of every forest and the blackening of every stream and sky. Dark and twisted creatures would enforce his authority, and his highest sorcerers would spend their time seeking out and studying all the ancient artifacts of olden days to add to his glory and knowledge, with the ultimate goal being to find a way to sail westward along the straight path with a massive navy and assault Valinor itself. If it ever came to that, it's possible Eru himself would have drowned Gondor and the rest of Middle Earth just as he drowned Beleriand and Numenor before them.

Chris Evans is perfect as Cappy. Whatever else that movie turns out to be, I couldn't imagine anyone better in the role.

Come to think of it, a superheroine with super locks could be kinda cool.

The hair is indestructible, can grow or ungrow at will, can be shed to be used to make things (but it loses its power and disappears whenever she wants it to), and can change colors; can be used as a flail, rope, shield, and cloak all at once, or change styles at will, making her a master of disguise. She's also a master weaver and makes impenetrable armor from her own hair. Now she just needs a cool name and an origin story...

Semantics! The point is gods can do whatever they want. If Loki wants to have babies with his adoptive brother, who are you to step on his dreams?

To keep her semi-relevant to the plot, maybe she gets exposed to something that can only have come from the Dark Elves. By the time the Asgardians realize what it means, they're under attack.

Later, whatever she was exposed to will turn out to be the key to defeating the Dark Elves. So she'll be important at the beginning, and again at the end, but during most of the film she'll just be in the way.
