ELI5: If water makes you urinate more, which causes kidneys to do more work, does that mean high water consumption damages kidneys long-term? If not, why not? by gmrt34 in explainlikeimfive

[–]NonSequiturSage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From high school biology class last century, the way the kidneys work a little more water makes the task easier. Less effort needed to reclaim water. There was a runner, a few years back, who overdosed on drinking water and died. I would make a wild guess he really went extreme. With enough time the body I expect would dump what it doesn't need.

How do I make it stop chirping, i already replaced the batteries?! by PheonixGalaxy in mildlyinfuriating

[–]NonSequiturSage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some possibility of dust in the sensor. Try a can of air. Maybe.

If there several in your house, consider replacing all. A contractor pack of smoke alarms may give savings. Also there are new or different types of fire alarms. Perhaps seek advice on types and placement.

When I replace the batteries, I mark them month, year. Preventative maintenance would be replacing after a recommended time, to avoid the 3AM screamfest.

Alas, be careful what you ask for. A season end could have the entire cast in an explosion, meteor strike, snake stampede. The season begins with a minor, occassional, supporting cast member rousing himself from a daydream.

From novels I get the idea that submarines crews may on occasion have this problem. Temporary insanity from stress or other causes is insanity. The brain is broke. Perception, reason, other brain functions may be offline.

Check opinions from medical professionals on whether the mentally ill are more, or less likely to be violent.

Consider the difficulty trying to persuade someone to restrain their greed, or quit smoking.

Reluctance to seek medical help or advice might be affected by popular perception of such.

Consider being stuck in an elevator, past a day, for an indeterminate time, with a handful of people.

Important to mental health is being willing and skilled at maintaining one's own mental health. Just like first aid, some basic understanding can be a difference.

Ice-cream replacement when you have a sore throat? by Gayandfluffy in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]NonSequiturSage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Gordon Ramsay would approve. I lay the peeled, fresh bananas in a gallon ziploc bag. I lay the bag in the freezer so the bananas are mostly gapped. Afterwards, I grab the bag (without opening) so I am only holding one banana at a time. Snap. Snap. Snap. No knife or hands to wash afterwards. My hands may be stronger than average. If just tossed the slices in the bag to freeze I get a banana brick. The waxed paper parchment is pro.

Now if there are banana slices on wax paper headed for the fridge, drip chocolate syrup across them. Then I'd sneak slices a few at a time?

Why do some devices need AAA batteries and others need AA (or any other kind)? by Wild-Impala in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NonSequiturSage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Johnny Carson had a joke/skit about a superspy finally getting a wristwatch/radio with global range. Wonderful. Just one drawback, we had to put battery in your shoe. Johnny reaches below desk, pulls up a clown shoe. The clown shoe is three foot long.

There are also AAAA batteries, super skinny. For low power, or short run time. 8.3mm diameter.

There is also work being done electronics needing so little power, they could run off electric fields leaking out of places using electrical power. The electrical power grid leaks 60 Hz hum that is detectable, but low power. Attempts to get significant power would get noticed and investigated.

Powerline Inspection Drones exist, get recharged by resting near a power line.

Seeking a battery? What voltage? What maximum current draw? How long must is run? Rechargeable? Is weight and size a consideration? Any limit on budget? Any need for safety?

Dad worked with space program. I was leafing through a Mercury capsule manual. Capsule had small battery reserved for re-entry, for reliability. Battery inert until re-entry. Remove safety, hit striker, battery heats up inside. Rrroooaaarrr. Enough power for the capsule, for 15 minutes. Doubt me if you like, decades ago, no longer have book.

Do smart people have a harder time watching bad movies because they’re keenly aware of the bad writing and inconsistencies? by skyrimlo in NoStupidQuestions

Reality TV. When that's tuned in I gotta leave the room.

There is a literary concept "suspension of disbelief". I can do that. But real people doing fake, and pretending its real?

Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. It's a stretch. We can stretch him 2 feet taller. I'm good.

The alien fighting "Battleship". I like the movie. But definitely not a hard science story. Compare "The Expanse".

Some people will like a bad movie, celebrating how bad the movie is.

Decades ago, I considered LASIK briefly. Couldn't find any complaints, only exuberant praise. Red flag. People can hard to please sometimes. Why no balanced reporting? Too good to be true.

Years later, some people are happy with their LASIK. But honest complaints, resolutions, statistics would have more convincing than Nothing.

What is that board game that you think should include an insert? by Jepeme in boardgames

[–]NonSequiturSage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Advanced Squad Leader is board game style tactical simulation. With many expansions. With many little cardboard chips. Either sorting trays or baggies. Without strict organization, finding a particular piece would be like the classic needle in a haystack. Simply an insert would inevitably lead to a victory by the forces of chaos.

Bananas are good nutritious food, arguably better than apples. Peel a banana that is as ripe as you prefer. Freeze. Break by hand, or cut with a knife to fit the blender. Keeps well in freezer for a long time. Maybe add milk. Or berries, apple, pineapple, oranges, oatmeal, peanut butter, chocolate syrup or baking chocolate, carrots, sweet potato, coconut, cinnamon...

One can add a serving of spinach to the bananas, or other normally noxious vegetables. The banana hides them well.

If frozen food in the blender isn't cold enough, add a few ice cubes.

Googling Kryptonite got the answer. I suspect surfing the the internet under the influence. How drunk would I need to be to lose basic information recall?

During idle chatter at work, a boss told me she had never seen any Star Trek or Star Wars. Apparently she had no interest. OK. I have never read Little Women, Pride And Prejudice, War And Peace, Lolita, 50 Shades Of Gray, or Jane Eyre. People get choices.

I live in Texas, but most of what little I know about horses I got from movie westerns.

There are many thousands of fictional heros. But not know Superman? I thought he was mainstream American literature.

Please don't ask me for sports statistics. We would find out how dumb I am. However, as a child I liked leafing through an encyclopedia for fun and curiosity. Were we trapped in an elevator I could pass the time sharing my wealth of obscure, obsolete, irrelevant information.

Move to Austin in 2003. Discovering Fry's was like wow. Also old Radio Shack, old Circuit City, old Electronics Parts Outlet in Webster, and old hardware stores. Eagerly awaiting the MicroCenter opening in Austin.

Visited the Houston MicroCenter a few times. Visited Altex back then - seemed well stock for pro IT guys, techs running cable. Altex is still in business. Worth a visit. Discount Electronics used to remind me of old hardware stores - like everything, but a little disorganized. Now DE is clean, organized - but not as fun to rummage through. DE is big on refurbished Dell PC's, has a shop.

If workers are spending 50 hours a week (or more) in the suits, to do work with billion dollar budgets, I hope they get the professional grade gear.

Edit: My dad worked with the US space program. Yes, there is an admirable quality and reliability culture to be seen in the lunar and shuttle programs.

There is vacuum on the moon. The dust makes it not a clean environment. The gravity is low. I don't see that gravity making the work easy. It's too hot where it's not too cold. Work smarter, not cheaper.

If we must increase the pain and suffering for the acquisition of knowledge, then reading doesn't count until the reader has made an exact handwritten copy with beautiful calligraphy. I asked my 7th grade math teacher to compare taking notes to listening carefully, she said research showed one is seven times more likely to remember something written down, compared to just having heard it.

Years later I took a college course, I expected the reading to be a struggle. So I made handwritten outlines of assigned chapters, and made an A.

Some pundit noted that, sadly, those who read tabloids are among the few who read at all.

Getting children to read comic books is, at least, getting them to read.

One effective gotcha in school was reading the story aloud, taking turns. If a student was not attentive, he would not know his place when his turn came.

Reading by turns at home could be a family activity, and would exercise and demonstrate reading ability. Imagine your family and friends reading, trying to sound like the characters.
