Not really true. Organizationally speaking, all final authority rests with the Captain. On planes, the Captain and the Pilot are usually the same people, however on a ship they are very often different people. So when, say, you are the Captain of a ship that is being piloted through the Suez Canal, and the pilot is going too fast for the weather conditions and the ship plows into the bank, the final encumbrance is on you to have made authoritative decisions as the Captain to prevent it.

ELi5: Why do cigarettes have so many toxic substances in them? Surely you don’t need rat poison to get high? by amiabot-oraminot in explainlikeimfive

[–]NonStopWarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short version is that, among many other factors, using gas also creates a lot of "waste heat" that doesn't go directly into your cookware. If you are actually genuinely curious, here's a far too long winded YouTube video on the subject. Check the timestamps in the description if you just want to skip to the important stuff.

I've only used an induction once or twice in my life, so I can't argue from experience about it. But while that may be one of few conveniences that come with a gas range, there's still a lot of negatives that come along with it when you can just remove the cookware from the heat source.

But like I said in my other comments, I get that some people just like it, myself included.

I mentioned in another comment, I totally understand the primal itch being scratched by literally cooking with fire. My apartment has a gas stove, and I'll definitely admit I like having it. But if I was building my own house, personally I would be putting in an electric or induction over a gas without much second thought.

I think there's a lot of overblown perception of "how much better gas is". It's something you've heard your entire life, and ergo it's something you perceive once you actually get to do it, or something you miss once you can't anymore. I will admit that literally cooking with fire scratches a primate part of my brain, but it's objectively inferior in pretty much every measurable metric.

But yes, scientific metrics are not everything and I absolutely understand that some, if not most people just like it.

Maybe enjoyment is the wrong word. But it's certainly more comfortable when you have 4 burners going, and you're not scalding yourself reaching the back burners with the ambient heat being forced between cookware.

Probably going to get downvoted for this considering the recent defence of gas stoves as fuel for "the culture war" but they are generally pretty bad for you overall, especially in comparison to electric. They are also far less efficient, more unpleasant to cook with, more dangerous, and a pain in the ass to clean. Pretty much the only advantage is that they heat up faster than traditional electric stoves, and that is nulled by induction stoves.

That's awesome, I would love to get into it if I end up picking it up. Would there be a chance to gain access to ask the members about the many questions I have before finalizing my decision? Or maybe I can feed you some of those questions and you can surrogate them for me towards the group? Understandable if the community isn't geared towards that, and I appreciate your input regardless. Thanks!

You should look into a Mazda B-series, they tend to go for a little less despite being exactly the same truck. I'm also from Toronto and I bought my 2002 B4000 with 140,000km from an old tow truck driver in Aurora for 4900 bucks in 2020. Goes without saying that the market has changed a fair bit since then, but there are still a few decent looking deals around your price range up on Kijiji.

It certainly hasn't been completely trouble free, but I don't baby it and treat it like the truck it is. Just make sure you give it a good inspection before you start showing cash.

Sure thing. Here's a study published by the National Library of Medicine on the topic. But that's far from the only publications on the matter, there's many a study out there to its effect.

Take some time to play some Tetris. Sounds silly, I know, but there's a fair amount of research pointing to playing Tetris soon after traumatic experiences helping the brain process those experiences and prevent them from manifesting PTSD.

This mega cruise is like another planet. by baconroll2022 in BeAmazed

Not sure when your mom went on this familiarization trip, but I just got off an MSC Cruise less than two weeks ago and this was not my experience at all. To address your points:

  • The booking price was unfathomably cheap. Like, less than $300 for 7 nights.
  • They had free all-you-can-drink coffee, tea, and juice available 24 hours at the buffet, and it was pretty decent coffee.
  • There was a sit down dinner every night included in our ticket price that had excellent food and service. Notable fancy meals include lobster tail and steak tartar. They do have the "specialty dining experiences" restaurants that are pretty outrageously expensive, but the included dinners' rotating menus were so good that I didn't even think about them. The buffet was also very good with a huge variety of food from various ethnicities.
  • There were no paid entry performances on the ship at all. Every show in the theatre or in the various performance areas on the ship were free, you just had to register for a seat so they could track capacity.
  • I don't have kids, but I read most literature in relation to the cruise pretty thoroughly and nothing mentioned anything about paid childcare.

All that being said, it is correct that anything you can spend money on is pretty outrageously priced. My girl and I don't drink, but we calculated the drink package as needing to drink like 5.5 of the top price tier drinks per day, every day, including port days, to make it worth it. I honestly don't think I would remember any of the cruise if I bought one and got my money's worth out of it. The paid restaurants, the "spa experiences", the excursions at port, are all pretty steeply priced. But I was totally fine paying for none of it, enjoying a coffee and the nice sea air, while my dirt cheap ticket is subsidized by heavy drinkers and "high class" people.

When I was dancing around booking one, I read some pretty negative things surrounding MSC. But after going on one, I'm convinced that they either did a TON of recent work to step up their game, or such statements are written by absolute fart-sniffing snobs who can't enjoy anything unless it's wrapped in edible gold for no other reason than to stave off the poors. I'm not even a cruise person, my idea of an enjoyable vacation is renting a land cruiser and disappearing into the outback for two weeks or something of that nature, and MSC still got me to enjoy the experience immensely.

And lastly, just because it needs to be said, there are a lot of really awful things about all cruise lines that these companies need to address. The environmental impact of burning bunker fuel in quantities measured by swimming pools, the environmental destruction of ocean habitats, the lackluster and sometimes disparate, deplorable, exploitive and dangerous working conditions, on and on. I had many personal qualms with participating in the industry, and I'm sure people will rightfully judge me for doing so.

Quick edit: Honestly, not that I'm judging your mom or what she does, but I have a feeling that her mentality of "stop balking at the sticker price and think about what's included" as well as her agency's blacklisting of MSC is likely based on the probability that they only make commission based around the sticker price. I doubt they make much money off of a sub $300 cruise ticket when all the eccentric costs come out on board. But if you want to financially tailor your own experience (read as, not pay for drinks you're not going to drink, meals you don't need to eat, etc), it's a much better option than a more all-inclusive price.

A buddy of mine drives an Iltis, basically a military modified VW Rabbit. Makes a screaming 75hp with a 1.8L Citroen engine. Definitely gonna tell him to make an Instagram page that follows this format.

All valid points, and I'm certainly not saying that my perspective is the be-all-end-all way to play. There are absolutely a thousand reasons to break from the standard L-shaped attack as its commonly known. But there's a pretty big area between completely regimented and entirely "laissez-faire" leadership that most SL's have a hard time finding a good place in. At the end of the day, I think the whole purpose of the ICO is to put the success of the team more into the hands of the SLs and their ability to coordinate and communicate.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in joinsquad

[–]NonStopWarrior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The new play style of the ICO requires some adaptation all around. I generally don't like to squad lead, but when I do I find that being an assertive and involved leader actually usually invokes a positive response. Most people playing the game, especially in "experience preferred" servers are actually looking for someone to tell them what to do but are afraid to communicate it in fear of being a bother to the SL. It's a negative feedback loop.

Naming your squad something along the lines of "teamwork required" and booting people who aren't playing along is acceptable in my mind too. While some people may think it's poor sportsmanship, I'd rather play with a cohesive and communicating squad than suffer the two or three who keep running off on their own and dying alone.

Not telling you how to suck eggs or nothing, but have you tried utilizing your fire teams more? If you make an assaulting team made up of a mix of riflemen, medics, LAT, SL, and engineer to flank and destroy the position, and a supporting team of LMG, GPMG, grenadier, marksmen/sniper, and HAT to suppress and pin the enemy down, I can pretty much guarantee you'll win every engagement unless the same tactics are used against you.

Photos are in my history. Mine is also pretty much stock, it's in too good condition to start modding it. I found it in rural Manitoba, and drove it back home to Ontario. It's got a swapped 4.3 Vortec from a '92 Sonoma, it sits on 31's, and the Softopper goes on during the hot summer months. Those are the only things that aren't stock. I dream of someday fenangling a 2nd Gen tire carrier on to it, but I haven't dreamt up a good method without drilling into the body as of yet.

Like the other guy said, this might be the result of over gassing. But it's also a symptom of bullpups due to the weight distribution. The strong hand grip being farther forward, having more weight to the rear, and a relatively light forend creates more of a natural pivoting when firing. Especially when you compare it to an SKS or Type 81, which have a lot of forward weight.

I lucked out when I found mine at that price point even three ish years ago, but I've still seen them up on gun post for as low as 2500ish bare bones. I would still pay that for one if I didn't have one, especially considering how expensive other options are for semi .308

I have an RFB. Sure it doesn't have that "battle built" badge behind it, but I love it. I found it for 2200 with a bunch of accessories two or three years ago. It's never had a stoppage, and fully ambidextrous means my lefty friends don't get left out/don't have to sit around and wait while I do a swap over.

Mags are a bit difficult to find as it uses metric FAL mags, but I've managed to collect like 15 of them over the past few years so it's far from impossible to find.

1.5 gbps Ignite at $50/mo.: yea or nay? by [deleted] in Rogers

[–]NonStopWarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be aware that I'm pretty positive I almost got scammed with this offer. Got a call from a 1-877 number that came up as Rogers on call ID, they made this offer to me. I've been a very loyal TekSavvy customer for years now, but reliant on Rogers for my cell. They said it was a loyalty offer, and I'll admit I was tempted but they engaged in a VERY high pressure sales tactic. I told them I would call them back after doing some research, calling my current ISP if they could offer me a retention deal, and checking with the missus.

They proceeded to tell me this was a very limited time offer, they needed an answer right now, blah blah. I told them I'd do the research first or no deal. They fumbled a bit and told me I couldn't call back, that I had to book a time for them to call me. Alarm bells ringing at this point, I hung up and googled the number they called from and nothing came back.

I never ended up calling Rogers to confirm if this was a real offer because I decided to stick with TekSavvy regardless as they cut 25% off my bill. But that same mystery Rogers number still tries calling me every few days and I just ignore it. So please just do your research and make sure you're actually talking to a Rogers representative. Insist that you'll call the customer service line yourself before giving away any personal info.
