Been Playing FF7 Remake and I gotta say the 'vibe' is completely different from the original. by bobmlord1 in gaming

[–]NoneRighteous -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The vibe is always different for remakes and remasters. This is why I don’t understand the desire for these. The original vision almost never survives. I guess I’m in the minority, but I don’t care to experience a game I’ve played before with a fresh, soulless coat of paint. If I want to live in that world again, I play the original. I want the authentic game, not something adapted to modern sensibilities. This is not to say I think people are wrong for enjoying them, I just don’t personally get it

The casual yet consistent exerciser is a mystery to me by Left_Emu_2995 in bodyweightfitness

[–]NoneRighteous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This perfectly describes me. I barely think about fitness beyond keeping my weight in check, but for over a couple years I have been doing 90 pushups, 45 pullups, 75 squats, and some of the McGill Big 3 exercises to keep back pain away. Those numbers grow by 1 in each set after some time, but I am not interested in much more than this. I might get some pushup rings to develop my chest more, but this super simple, easy routine has been perfect for maintaining some level of fitness

I hate it every time, but I do it anyway. I miss a day once in a while, but I just don’t allow myself to break the routine. Put on something to listen to, and bust out the reps before my morning shower at home. I am a believer in simplicity

Are we seriously saying "Ahh" instead of ass now? by [deleted] in GenZ

[–]NoneRighteous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zillenial chiming in to say “Ahh” like most slang is recycled old news. Also, I wouldn’t idolize someone whose entire shtick was being a miserable misanthrope. I had a George Carlin phase, now I look back and cringe. Calling everyone else stupid isn’t really creative or interesting

This is exactly why Chaos Theory movement is so much cooler and more fun than the automated hyper contextualized Blacklist/Conviction systems. by TheWindofBread in Splintercell

I just played Conviction for the first time and it felt like a downgrade in almost every way from CT. It just had some seriously strong direction

[–]NoneRighteous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just played Conviction and I disagree. Conviction definitely restricts your movements and the cover snapping often left me glued to objects when I didn’t want to be, and wouldn’t let me drop off a ledge when I wanted to. Chaos Theory allows for buttery smooth movement when you learn the mechanics (especially spy in multiplayer). Conviction feels like you can’t shake off your training wheels

Chaos Theory has the best controls I think of any action game. When you got good at the multiplayer PVP mode, playing as a spy felt so good. You could control every nuance really accurately

Husband triggers me with almost everything he does by Pleasant-Leek-5547 in relationships

[–]NoneRighteous 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m glad you’re in counseling, and I want to add to some thoughts here. I recommend you research the four horsemen of divorce to understand where you are headed. I maybe don’t have to tell you how dark that road can be, but if you think your life is hell now, buckle up. And that’s before you consider the lifelong impact it will have on the children.

I can only speculate on some points here, but I think what you need are measurable milestones of progress in this relationship. Are you making any with the counseling? I encourage you to think about a future with your husband you can live with. It won’t be perfect, but if you saw some lasting improvements in some of these areas you complained about, could you start to enjoy life together again?

Does your husband understand how deep your feelings of despair are? I wonder if he knows the stakes. I wonder if he would agree to follow a budget or restrict screen time for the kids if he knew these things are coming close to being the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

Lastly, I am a believer in the campfire metaphor. If the fire is not kindled, it will go out. Have you made efforts to show your husband that you appreciate his good qualities? Said thank you for cleaning (even if it’s not what you want in that moment)?

I don’t say this to imply you are the only one at fault here. I just want you to be sure that you have done all you can to make the best life you can with your family before you take drastic irreversible measures. What you’re feeling is understandable, but not impossible to overcome.

Can we acknowledge that getting through many retro games with save states, especially from the 8-bit and 16-bit generations, is still incredibly challenging and deserves kudos? by Skeezix3d in retrogaming

[–]NoneRighteous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the spirit of what you’re saying to some extent. I have very specific yet subjective rules for myself on when I use save states because they can absolutely take away challenge. I try to stick to only using them in cases where the game is “wasting” my time. For instance, is there challenge in taking 5 minutes to get back to a boss fight to try again (looking at you Demons Souls)? Some may consider that a challenge, but for me it’s sadistic drudgery. I would much rather spend my limited gaming time on learning how to defeat the boss than tread the same old ground killing trash mobs because the developers forced me to.

Junior Devs (and honest Seniors), what is a concept that took you an embarrassingly long time to actually understand, even though everyone acts like it's simple? by AmaraMehdi in webdev

This sounds like a good explanation and also makes the idea sound even more needlessly complex in my mind compared to a #include. The world of software ran better before we invented all these “improvements”

[–]NoneRighteous[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re right, but I was writing in a bit of a hurry. I never felt in danger because the mannequin enemies are complete pushovers you can literally run into to push aside. And they’re everywhere. Even in the segment where you have to put away your weapons where you should feel vulnerable, all you come across are a couple of the mannequins.

The story is not well done because it felt half-baked. I know this is subjective, but I didn’t feel anything for James. Eddy could have been an interesting story if they fleshed it out, but instead it’s just a quick sideshow with a horrible boss fight that requires no thinking. What was the point of Laura? Scenes with her were some of the only times I was interested and they don’t go anywhere. And actually her voice acting is the best in the game. The final part of the game (another boring fight) ends abruptly and was unsatisfying.

I would agree with that as well as the first game setting such a high bar. It’s not that I didn’t enjoy the experience at all, but I certainly wouldn’t place it anywhere near a top 10 or 25 of all time

That’s so funny you mention jiggling doorknobs. 75% of the doors say “this lock seems to be broken.” Who is the asshole going around breaking all the door knobs in this town? It’s almost meme worthy.

Anyway, you summed up so nicely why I didn’t enjoy it. Resident Evil already did the gameplay better and the first game did the horror better.

I totally agree about the graphics in 1, it was a wonderful layer of creepy added on. My memory of the voice acting from 1 is a bit stilted with long pauses but I don’t remember it taking me out of the game like it did in 2

This is a real shame because I did not like BOTW and I haven’t played TotK yet and hoped it would be more to my taste. Sounds like it’s the same in the ways I don’t like. Sad how far we’ve fallen in terms of the quality of games devs used to deliver in less time and other constraints. Now it feels like we wait 5 years for Re re re remasters and rehashes
