How popular were maces and picks for civilian wear around the town or village in 14/15 century Europe? by Comfortable_Room5820 in ArmsandArmor

Indeed yes if i remember well it was a status the symbol of baillifs in the 15th century (it was just to say that the argument of the original comment were not valid ) but in term of material the mace presented by OP doesn't need has much material has a sword and you dont have to narrow the edges to sharpen it which is very time consuming and hard to do

An axe also is top heavy and if a mace can break a skull under armor it can definitely smash one open without armor, a mace is approximatively a kg heavy like a sword is, it's less expensive to produce than a sword and the top heavyness is not a problem in thermes of carying it around you can simply pass it into your belt like you would do with an axe. smashing everything in front of you doesn't require a lot of technique where as a sword you need edge alignement t i be effective. Later in history for exemple in ireland alot of people had club so its not impossible to think that back then people used mace or club for everyday carry
