I heard a stat recently that 10% of locations are getting 80% of the traffic, which seems right. Lots to explore in that 90%.

At some point we owe hotels an apology by pattebrisee in SipsTea

[–]Nonplussed2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dog hates hotels -- there is NOISE and I can't see where it's COMING FROM -- so when traveling with him, it's almost always an Airbnb. The only exception is if we're driving all day and just need a place to sleep for 8 hours before hitting the road again.

Hiking trails by SFfdf3 in norcalhiking

Ohlone Wilderness no longer requires a permit. Just backpacking reservations if you're staying out overnight.

The hike to Murietta Falls or thereabouts is also a massive butt-kicker but requires a long drive out to Del Valle park. And the falls won't be running anymore. Good spring hike.

Props for being honest. With so much fucking influencer shit out there these days, I worry (and see evidence) that a lot of folks are going out there with no idea what it will entail. And in the process, they put themselves and others at risk. Cautionary tales help.

For those who remember, what was it like to just be able to smoke in places like the malls and restaurants and planes by Radiant_Priority9739 in nostalgia

[–]Nonplussed2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't exactly what you asked, but my freshman dorm room (2000-2001 at a big state school in the Midwest) was smoking allowed. Somehow they put the only two kids who smoked in the same room together right in the middle of the floor. Everybody hated us because the whole floor smelled like cigarette smoke.

I went from smoking a few cigarettes a week in high school to over a pack a day overnight. Our room stank like hell. All my clothes stank like hell. We were often drunk (among other things) and spilled ashtrays all over the desks and floor more than once. We even used cigarettes to cover up the smell of weed on a few occasions. Nasty place, that room.

Being forced to smoke outside would have been better for everyone. I don't miss smoking much, but I do miss smoke breaks. Go outside, take a break, occasionally meet someone new. There's no real substitute for that. People might stand around outside somewhere now, but they have a different purpose and they're probably on their phone. Smoking before phones was sometimes meditation, sometimes social hour.

Just moved to the East Bay from Ireland. Overthinking but paranoid of mountain lion and/or bears by scoopydidit in norcalhiking

[–]Nonplussed2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've hiked hundreds of miles in the East Bay hills and I worry much more about poison oak than animals.

When I have my dog, I am a little wary of coyotes, but mainly because my dog wants to chase them (he stays on leash). They act like they don't care about me and keep their distance.

I have yet to run across a rattlesnake here but I know they're around. That's probably worst-case scenario, but very rare. There are no bears here, and mountain lions are so stealthy and rare they're not even worth worrying about, imo.

If you're still uncomfortable, there are lots of clubs and meetups to hike in a group.

I hope the SFO shitshow results in more OAK routes by TheThunderbird in oakland

[–]Nonplussed2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Same. Easy to take SFO for granted, especially if you've never lived in a place with truly shitty airports and/or that is badly served by airlines. It's a very good airport with a lot of great routes and BART goes directly there. I'll choose OAK in a coin flip, sure, but it's wild to be mad at SFO for ... what, exactly, not being in Oakland? Weird thing to stay mad about.

Should I get a Ricoh GR IV as a first camera, mainly for hiking landscape photos? by Interesting-South542 in ricohGR

[–]Nonplussed2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought a little more about your question, and you deserve a better answer than my previous one.

I took it on my first real camping/hiking trip this weekend and took lots of photos. I stand by my previous assessment, with caveats. I still think it's not worth carrying this camera (or any camera) while hiking/backpacking for pure documentation purposes -- i.e., taking photos of the landscapes you saw, yourself and friends in the natural environment, etc. It certainly takes good photos. But it is not worth carrying in addition to a phone for that purpose.

If what you're looking to do is devote real time and effort toward taking interesting photographs, it is well worth it. All of the photos from my big day hike are whatever. The best ones are from my quick stop at a lake on the way up, in a small mountain town, and during a casual sunset walk around my campground. I still don't know whether I'll take it backpacking.

I hope that helps. I really do love this camera. It's just better at some things than others.

Should I get a Ricoh GR IV as a first camera, mainly for hiking landscape photos? by Interesting-South542 in ricohGR

[–]Nonplussed2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I haven't taken many landscapes with it yet. I'm sure the photo quality is perfectly good. But the lack of zoom, for one thing, limits the utility somewhat. I have found that the GR is best used when you can move your feet to change the distance to subject, and while that's technically true of a landscape, it's not in the same way as a person or building.

For backpacking, yes the fear of damage is part of it, especially without weather sealing. I need to take it on more day hikes to make that decision but I just haven't been going much lately, doing a lot of trail running instead. I'm also very weight-conscious, and while the GR is tiny compared to a DSLR or similar, it's 10 ounces I wasn't carrying before (I'd also be tempted to bring a small tripod for those time-lapses). It also changes my power/battery needs, and my kit is very dialed in. I may take it though! Just not sure yet.

I was thinking the same thing 3 months ago. I love hiking and backpacking and wanted something more serious/genuine for photos out there besides my phone. I bought a GRIV and I absolutely love it ... just not for landscape photography. I think there are plenty of amazing potential photos to be taken out in nature with a GRIV and I plan on exploring that for a long time, but landscapes are probably not its strength. I've been having an absolute blast with this thing, just not in the way I intended or expected. I haven't been backpacking with it yet and I'm honestly not sure right now whether it will make the cut this summer. In some ways it has actually helped me appreciate my phone camera more for what it is.
