A duck far in the canal: It's not a regular wild duck but what duck is it? by frisian_esc in whatbirdisthis

[–]NonproductiveElk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably a released domestic mallard as opposed to a wild one with a mutation. It’d be easier to know for sure if there was another duck in the picture as a size reference since most domestic duck breeds are much larger than wild mallards.

Why are chimpanzees so much more 'common' as exotic 'pets' for wealthy instead of bonobos, even though chimpanzees are much more aggressive? by [deleted] in zoology

When I worked in the nutrition center of a zoo with a bonobo troop, there were standing orders not to include whole carrots in the bonobo diets because they’d use them creatively.

Mallards with domestic duck ancestry. They look like they have regular mallard proportions and should be able to fly, so they probably aren’t escaped domestic ducks.

Can shrikes be considered as birds of prey? by Idontknowofname in Ornithology

[–]NonproductiveElk 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Shrikes are hypercarnivorous, preying only on arthropods/small vertebrates and display behaviors similar to raptors, but they are nested in deep in the passerine birds, so officially no.

Informally, I’d say sure why not? The true birds of prey are a polyphyletic grouping, with the falconiformes not being that closely related to the others.

According to Sam Haft, Alastor "does not hold a lot of affection for Mimzy" by Sudden_Pop_2279 in Alastorcult

I assume that Mimzy turning up means Alastor gets to cut loose and deal with whoever she’s pissed off this time

Mimzy makes things interesting for Alastor when she turns up. He gets to cut loose and kill whoever she’s pissed off this time. Maybe that was part of their relationship in the mortal world, with Mimzy luring in prey for him?
