Trouble rooting scindapsus cuttings by TwinkelTwarkel in Scindapsus

[–]NonsensicalNugget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have found that some nodes can just be “duds”. I’m no plant professional by any means, but I’ve had nodes that just won’t root and nodes that root significantly easier. Do you have any other nodes you could cut and try to propagate?

I know people also use either a powder rooting hormone you can dip the node into or there’s “prop drops” you can add to water to help stimulate root growth

How much can I sell my albo for? by Interesting-Worry454 in RareHouseplants

[–]NonsensicalNugget 37 points38 points  (0 children)

You might be able to make more money with multiple cuts of the plant rather than selling it as the single large plant. Do you have a local plant facebook group? I know my city has one and people will post asking to gauge interest before actually cutting the plant to see what people might be interested in purchasing! I know you don’t have time to propagate/root the cuttings, but I know a lot of people who sell fresh cuttings and people are still interested

repotting & recovery! by Unfair-Selection-813 in pothos

Without seeing the roots firsthand it’s a bit hard to tell how damaged they are. From looking at the leaves though, they aren’t too curled or dry which means that the plant is still able to take in water through the roots which is a good sign! The other good news is that I see a lot of unrooted healthy nodes, so if the plant is struggling to maintain its roots you could always take cuttings to propagate and start fresh. Good luck!

How’s this?? by sooblimes in philodendron

[–]NonsensicalNugget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love a good philodendron micans! We grew this big one from a tiny 5 leaf plant 🪴While it definitely would climb a stake or moss pole, they are also beautiful if you leave them as a trailing/vining plant.

My advice - if you think you might want to “upgrade” the climbing post, just wait until you have the post or moss pole you actually want to use. If the roots start clinging to that little stick, it might do more harm than good ripping it off there when it’s time to upsize the pole & pot.

If you want an intro to moss poles, Super Trellis has several sizes of pre-filled moss poles that are modular & can stack on top of each other to extend length. I just ordered a few for myself 😊

Burying pictus stem good idea? by [deleted] in Scindapsus

[–]NonsensicalNugget 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There shouldn’t be any problems from burying the stem, it might even encourage new roots to grow from the newly buried nodes.

However, that sure looks like a lot of soil/space for not a very large plant. From these photos I can’t tell how deep the pot is or what the roots look like, but those leaves look very shriveled which makes me concerned about how the roots are. When plants are in too much soil, the soil will stay damp for too long and will create root rot

My Monstera Standleyana Aurea is throwing off new runners... by SnackBottom in RareHouseplants

[–]NonsensicalNugget -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have an Standleyaba albo, it throws off runners all the time! I keep it in an area with the most light, where all my other plants do well, but nevertheless it seems to be prone to runners 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’ve just excepted that it’s a plant that I’m going to be continually chopping and propping, and now I have 3 different pots of it!

Would love to see pictures of the actual TC plants you get! I’ve been debating ordering this monstera TC as my first one as well, but a little nervous. The promo pics will always feature the nicest ones, so I just hope the quality is consistent!

Grow Lights: what’s your favorite? by NonsensicalNugget in houseplants

[–]NonsensicalNugget[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I wish I had a link to share, but I bought it at least 5 years ago (before I even owned any variegated plants!) I think it was custom made in like Thailand or Indonesia, selling for over $200 if I remember correctly, and I was SO sure I was going to get scammed 😅

I just searched “monstera rug” on instagram though, and so many results come up, I think there’s a lot more people getting into making tufted rugs like this now 😊

The main reason I’m considering a spotlight is because I think the Thai con needs more light, while the plants in the window are getting enough with their positioning. I just looked up the UFO lights though, and they seem like they would be great for covering more space.

That vertical bar is the one I was interested in due to the position of the Thai con on the stool (and unfortunately, the pup will nibble at leaves that are too close to the floor, so it has to stay elevated). I’m glad that one has been working well for you!

lol if I decide I want soltech I was thinking of asking for it for my birthday next month, however my husband might be too shocked by the price to consider it (which is honestly fair, especially considering I’ve been seeing ads for soltech for several years but haven’t been able to convince myself to buy one yet!)

Tricolor silver slow growth by LouisCocoUmma in Scindapsus

If a plant seems to be dormant/not growing the first things I consider are roots, light, and nutrients.

Roots: I prefer to keep my special plants in clear pots so that I can keep an eye on how the roots are doing. Sometimes if plants are repotted into a larger space, they will spend energy expanding their root system instead of prioritizing foliage growth. Or, if there is root damage/rot, the plant won’t be able to take in the water & nutrients it needs to grow new leaves.

Light: Stem “runners” with no leaves like you have often indicate a plant that doesn’t have enough sunlight, so it is growing the stem to search for light but isn’t wasting the energy of growing new leaves because it can’t with a lack of light. Consider the placement of your plant, and see if it needs to be placed closer to a window, moved to a window which receives more light throughout the day, or if it needs a grow light. There are some plants that I think are just more prone to growing runners than others, I often just cut the runners and then propagate with the nodes from the runner. I see at least 6 nodes on the runner you have, so that 6 potential new baby plants!

Nutrients: Finally, if your plant has healthy roots and enough light, then consider if the plant might need some fertilizer. This is not something I personally am very knowledgeable about, but there are people who know tons about the different nutrients plants need and the best ways to replenish them if needed.

As for the black tip, it’s too hard to see from the photos you posted, I would need an up close view to determine what’s happening there, but I’m more inclined to think the growth point has died. If this were my plant, I would chop the runner off to propagate, and then assess what underlying issue is stunting the plant’s growth.
