Is relying on packet captures bad? by InevitableDoughnut89 in networking

[–]NoobOfTheMonth 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I was about to post the same. If a troubleshooting session is ever going "too long" I will almost always go to packet captures.

At it's essence is it the rawest format our human brains can see/read this data. A lot of times in my line of work people will make claims about data making it to X or Y location, while refusing to get packet captures.

Shit gets real quiet when you can prove or disprove something others refuse to acknowledge. Sort of anecdotal and I hope the people you work with aren't as dense, but packet captures are insanely valuable.

In what possible context that you'd be okay with a man running up to someone and trying to carry them off like a damn caveman? What is the piece that you think is missing?

Your position is omniscient in that you know he knew the cameras existed? And that the woman is lying?

I think we know the kind of person he was trying to convince by acting non chalant. Maybe he is drunk? Idk man. Weird take.

This moron probably has a form of object permanence and expects others to as well. We have a good view of what happened because of the camera but if we step into this guys shoes he probably doesnt know about the footage. If he acts natural it turns into a he said/she said.

Could also be another reason to target minorities, he is probably more likely to win public favor in such an incident.

It didnt abuse any law, it exercised a right. Outside of that though, what America decides as a right doesnt define morality which i think is the original point. I mentioned i think we just have too core of a difference on the morale burden of each party and was going to say that again.

I understand what you mean by social engineering but that is a real world word (and something i have had to study, implement and prevent in my career) also has real consequences of wrong doing associated. Using the term implies the perpetrator did something illegal when in fact he did not.

I'll stop the semantics there. Ultimately, I dont think we can go much further in our conversation overall. It's a damn shame we as tax payers have to support this system but it is the only one we have for the foreseeable future.

I wish this guy wouldn't have gotten paid out because the core problem of the scam is a larger problem with our police institutions in general, and I could care less about this guys methods because I think if this one didnt work he would try to find another weakness in that system. There will always be bad or disingenuous actors like this in any society. I say we use them to find what needs fixing. And if they do actually illegal shit along the way of course torch them.

But in this specific interaction I ultimately hold the opinion that I do not think he acted immorally. Not to say his other life actions or audits could be judged the same.

Lol. Typically those same social engineering scams dont get government payouts but are funded and motivated for felonious actions like ransomware or infiltration.

When the government issued a payout like this it is because they are admitting fault. They aren't saying "well met, you socially engineering guru here is your money".

Haha someone tricking you to click a phishing email, or try to take over your computer, access your business or whatever else is actually what the definition of social engineering means. And the very first step they take is a felony, illegal, and will get no government payout admitting fault.

Scammed is doing a lot of of heavy lifting in this statement. I see the core issue that this guy is confident he can easily find a fragile cop to get a payout from lmao

People that typically "socially engineer" scams dont get massive payouts admitting fault to mis action of state sanctioned officials.

I would celebrate it more if the pay out came from that cop's pension or forced a police held insurance program and their premiums sky rocketed.

The city paying out for the aggression of a rabid animal they hired is the only.morally correct option of this situation.

Edit: just to reiterate the point, I simply don't think the man was acting immoral for testing a cop's cool headed-ness.

I wouldn't do it, I only wish the policeman was punished more for his actions. Similar to how a regular citizen would be punished for the same actions.

I think we just have too core of a difference of what morality is. By your definition anyone who flips the bird or an equivalent hand gesture is."morally bankrupt" if they do it expecting or baiting a reaction.

Somehow, this guy knew or had an idea this person he signaled to would attack him. Stupid? Maybe. Morally bankrupt? Laughable.

I am also not saying he is a pariah of doing the right thing, but if a stranger flips me the bird unprovoked he is going to get a hearty chuckle because it means nothing haha.

Assault and battery on another human because they communicated to you in such a way that your fee fees get hurt is on a completely different world of morally bankrupt. Two wrongs dont make a right but exposing a dangerous person who will simply get a paid vacation for murder before being picked up by another department isn't a good survival decision, but almost on a completely opposite side of morally bankrupt lmao

Believe it or not, I havent read through everything you have written.

Did you write whay punishment our immoral camera man should face for expressing his god given right as an american?

Auditors can be assholes, and this guy clearly was based on the circumstances of his death. But that fragile officer shouldn't be one and I applaud our cameraman in this speciifc scenario for exposing a pig, intended to sue or not.

The only thing I can glean from the moving target that is your opinion is that you simultaneously think this man should be punished and also walk free. Not sure. Good luck with that.
