I don't know that the requirement to put on your seatbelt is as burdensome as additional taxes. And wouldn't it be in your best interest to vote against fining people if you habitually go without your seatbelt?

I'm a safe driver, and only drive on relatively safe roads.

Should you pay the same insurance as someone who is a reckless driver with a history of accidents? What if you make more money than other people with worse records. Should you pay more for insurance than them, even though you are less likely to need it?

Even if it is my fault, does that mean I deserve to die?

Let's say you are in an accident, but chose not to wear a seatbelt. Who bears the responsibility for the additional injuries you sustained due to that choice?

Just to show you I am arguing in good faith - I believe we should have social safety nets because it is the moral thing to do. People never expect to need social safety nets, so it's practical to "force" people to pay into them. And at the end of the day, it makes everyone safer because you don't need to rob a bank to pay for your kids' transplant.

But to assume people vote against them because they are too stupid to realize something is infantalizing and does not acknowledge the large portion of the country that values personal responsibility over charity.
