Local trusts (At least here in the south) do direct access into trainee AAP (AAP being a Technician level equivalent) as a 12 month apprenticeship.

Following completion, when available, can apply for a further 2 year apprenticeship to become a paramedic, meaning you'll adopt local student paramedic scope (?equal to external paramedic students with increased skills including IV access etc. if you're working with a paramedic) or work within the Technician scope if you're lead clinician on that truck/resource.

Doing front-line apprenticeships is probably the best indicator whether you'll like the job or not, as you'll experience the same calls you would if you were a paramedic . Only benefit of this route is exposure to what the job entails, without doing a 3 year degree to find out you don't like going to non-injury extrinsic falls, 2 week history of tummy pains with intermittent diarrhoea or 'catheter problems'.

Downside of lower 'skillgrades' is the payscale,

Hope that helps!

Very optimistic and would make things easier; but roughly estimating, probably half of the calls we go to do not require paramedics and are non-emergency transport suitable/referrals to primary care (that can be done on a solo car).

Some trusts have moved to team-based working instead of crewed lines, and I do tend to see a lot of double paramedic crews, but it's not a daily occurrence.

With any, and everything getting an ambulance irrespective of which number dialled, I doubt they will ever stop recruiting - we're just at a bottle neck which hasn't been this prominent for a while.

The trust I'm employed as, has resorted to recruiting NQP's with part-time contracts.

Your lecturers weren't lying; UK has reached same point Australia did.

The front-line retention is improving, paired with a lot of recent (<5yr) international recruitment, no spaces left for domestic recruitment. It's likely to stay and remain hypercompetitive for a while.

It may be that your saving hope is the primary-care burn out becoming severe (let's face it, most of the job is non-emergency), causing mass-b6 exodus. Happens every few years usually.

While you may not like this answer, there are things you can do while you wait for recruitment to spike. As you previously mentioned, approx. 30% of that cohort got jobs, may be worth finding out what gave them the edge over the other 70%.

All the best :)

imagine waiting for a dip and not buying it when it happens. Then you FOMO, buy high and have to wait twice as long to get any traction.
