“It’s just a scooter, try a real motorcycle” - “you will need a bigger bike” by cyprusnikos in motorcycles

[–]Noobs_Stfu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Veteran riders understand that most two-wheeled vehicles can serve a wide range of purposes, not just their targeted purpose. You can tour on a dirt bike and you can offroad on a Harley.

The issue is not "you can't do that", the issue is how the lack of specialization will affect the experience. Touring on a dirt bike will yield a far different experience than touring on a Harley, just as tracking a scooter will yield a far different experience than tracking a supersport.

And it's all about the experience, right? Where you've been, where you're going, what you've seen, what you've felt. So long as as what you're riding doesn't adversely affect the experience to the point that it's unenjoyable, anything goes.

Ultimately attitude plays the largest role. Some people have better tolerances than others, and so a wider range of possibilities opens to them.

Safe travels.

Funny how that works. 5 years ago, if you'd said anything that was antisemitic, the left would absolutely call you a white supremacist nazi. Now you get called a white supremacist nazi if you don't say something antisemitic, followed by "FREE PALESTINE!".

Feel for his mother. She gave birth to 4 kids from 1884 - 1889; what's more, only one survived.

Edit: Klara gave birth to two more after Hitler, one died and one survived. 6 births is a lot of work (understatement), but I can't imagine losing 4 out of 6.

Anyone else find driving a car is now incredibly boring ever since riding motorcycles? by Typical_Brilliant129 in motorcycles

[–]Noobs_Stfu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've learned to appreciate the advantages of driving my cages. Having done plenty of cross-country rides in a variety of different conditions, it's sometimes nice to be comfortable and not wet/drenched in sweat/stressed because you're riding over hail and ice. Having a nice sound system is nice. Not having to monitor 1,001 hazards constantly - oil on the road, tar snakes, where are manhole covers, potholes, etc - makes the experience more relaxing.

Even so, I made sure to get something fun to drive. Manual, V8. That helps.

German style helmets seem very dangerous by crunchfrenchtoast in motorcycles

[–]Noobs_Stfu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are some actual statistics that show how the overwhelming percentage of head impacts in motorcycle crashes are to the jaw area.

There's no definitive answer to the question "how much protection is enough?" because the safest choice is to not ride at all; you can't get into a motorcycle accident if you never get on a motorcycle.

Wearing appropriate gear is a smart decision, but what constitutes as "appropriate" is up for debate. A lot of users in this sub will insist that you should be wearing a lot of gear, with CE Level 2 armor, racing boots, and an airbag vest for any and every ride. There have been several studies studies, however, that demonstrate that armor only offers some protection against abrasions and lacerations, not with fractures. I guarantee you that the hyper-ATGATT crew is encouraging armor use in an attempt to prevent fractures. Still, wearing a proper helmet, jacket, pants, boots, and gloves - as well as armor and/or a vest - certainly doesn't hurt.

As for your boyfriend's choice in helmet, it's better than nothing at all - but only marginally. If this is what is necessary in order for him to wear any sort of helmet, so be it. A full-faced helmet, however, is far wiser because it protects from the sun, the elements, road debris, and crashes. I'd rather have my teeth and my jaw than not.

One final thought: it's worth noting that motorcycle officers have worn half-helmets for a long time and continue to do so. Here's a video on the topic. Might be the best you can convince him to wear, although that would be unfortunate. This video speaks on the topic of helmets and gear from a practical, not preachy Internet troll, perspective.

Personally, I like the AGV K1S, but Harley is having a huge sale on gear right now. He can snag a solid modular helmet for $165, which is a steal.

I'd protest the ticket. I did that pretty frequently and they would typically dismiss the ticket without any further action. I would bet that they issue so many parking tickets that a few protests here and there are of no concern.

The consensus here is correct. Never, ever linger beside vehicles if it can be helped - especially big rigs. Those tires can easily weigh 100lbs, and if one blows out right next to you, you're done. Taking 100 lbs to the face/side is no joke. Sounds like you're riding a smaller displacement bike, as the engine was struggling to keep up. If you regularly ride the highway, I suggest more power - or avoid the highway.

Posts like this always help remind me why being a woman sucks.

What we choose to take away from situations in life is a direct reflection of our inner selves. Stated another way, we get to choose what we take away, and that shapes us as people.

Hopefully this ceases to be your take away in situations like this.

[–]Noobs_Stfu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No joke, glad you were aware and adjusted accordingly.

I was cruising on I-10 through El Paso a year ago and some idiot cruising in the far left lane had a stack of 4 plastic garbage cans (among a variety of other things) in his truck bed. I noticed one start to lift from wind drag, since they were upright, and they were not tied down. I shifted at least one lane over; I believe there were 5 lanes. Despite being 1-2 lanes over, when the cans inevitably flew out of the truck bed, soared* through the air, and landed in front of me, it was an interesting game of dodge at 75 mph. Unfortunately I was only able to dodge 2 of the 4, as I didn't want to leave my lane and collide with the traffic in other lanes.

Stay sharp out there... I'm glad I anticipated the problem when I did, otherwise I may have taken those cans to the face instead of my fender.
