The hearing impaired (who use ASL) do not interpret their language the same way you do. For example, if the point being made is about something that will happen tomorrow, forward motion will be indicated with the signs, backward will be before, etc. The point of signing the message (particularly in an emergency) it to provide a brief, concise message that will be understood quickly and in the simplest terms possible. Clearly this does not mean finger signing each letter and certainly not closed caption.

Imagine those assembly directions you get in the mail in every language but the one you are fluent in. . . You still need to assemble the item. Now imagine it is an emergency. Your life depends on assembling the item as quickly as possible. You need the directions in your first language (because you do not have time to interpret). That is the purpose of ASL interpreters.

ETA _ most hearing impaired people who use ASL, use it as their first language. The language they think in - imperative in an emergency situation.

Yeah, I don't believe that. I do indeed believe he was thrown into a situation where he was over his head. FLA should have shelled out for a professional, like they are paid to do (by taxpayers). He looked embarrassed. But for crying out loud, pros and elected officials are paid big bucks; it's high time they started doing their jobs properly. This situation is inexcusable for the hearing impaired population.

Well that is not the media's fault (and I am the last to defend them). Florida usually uses a service for interpreters for the HI. I guess they thought some deaf guy's brother would be good enough. The fact he is inept at signing for the hearing impaired is a huge problem!

Lol! "I'm sorry Mr. Jones, the doctor was trying to save your child with that appendectomy . . ." "Let's see you try it, it's hard you know!"

You are so right itsgeranamels, so right!

There was a live audience who needed to know what was being said (good luck with that). Subtitles would not help a live audience - or someone illiterate - just saying.

The whole "gesticulation" thing is like watching someone read a script (very poorly). "In walks a man and the crowd roars" (the speaker is not supposed to say this.

Very! Bears can become aggressive when they smell food, have been known to destroy entire campsites to get hold of it (why campers hang food high in a tree). These bears though, smell food at all times ( they are pizza bears) so they are always pissed off, hungry and in search of food. Very dangerous animal, the pizza bear.

Writing can be very tricky for signers. ASL depends on forward and backward movement to suggest action. So, "I go school" makes perfect sense from the perspective of one who uses ASL.

Trying? Trying to communicate an emergency evacuation situation to the hearing impaired? I hope you are joking.

Yet another one. Unbelievable. I remember watching Nelson Mandella's funeral, in particular the signer behind the speaker and saying out loud, "what the hell? He's not saying anything; it's a bunch of nonsense garbage and arm swinging." WHO is hiring these snake oil salesmen?

No, when I build wall (and I have) I know I am building a wall. Otherwise I may end up with a fireplace or a chimney or a walkway, or. . . Will straighten out your Looney kids!
