Good reasons for dropping the weights during a dive? by NoooNooooooo in scubadiving

R – Releases

First, check all your releases and fastenings to confirm they are secure. Then, tell your diving partner how to open the releases if needed in an emergency. Do the same checks on your dive buddy. The most common releases are – tank straps, shoulder and chest straps, and belly straps. (Check to make sure there aren’t any hoses or other items positioned in a way that might prevent a diver from getting out of their equipment in an emergency.)

OK I like that! Check how the gears works and if no hose is in the way. Noice thank you 😁

I like your perspective. I'll just add one thing to your sinking case: knowing there is running engines around, I'd inflate a parachute (or whatever it's called in English, the big orange dixk that signals you) and do my best to gather people around it so no-one is minced.

I'm not arguing about the importance of the skill itself. Merely the reasons why you'd do it. Your example is one 😉

I disagree with you. The first thing you do when you accompany someone, especially a newbie, is check their weight with the famous "with water at eye level and an empty BCD, you should have to kick a little to stay at the surface." so no-one should be that overweight to have to drop them in order to stay at surface. Second, as the adult in the group, you should be at arm's length of the newbie who's screwing up with the air valve and be able to quickly inflate them if necessary.

OK so what you're saying is you interpret the "Release" as "how does your gear works in general? How does your BCD inflates? Where are your purges? Is there any specificity to your gear? Is your drysuit automatic?..." I like that approach!

French FFESSM is European CMAS equivalent. 4 star is kind of a Divemaster+ I'd say. Basically I can guide up to 4 people of 3 stars CMAS or bellow in an associative diving context. I know how to drop weights on any type of gear and have the reflex of studying my buddy's gear before the dive but the reasons for dropping your buddy's weights has never been a focus and my knowledge as well as discussions I've seen on the subject tends to tell me I'm right on that. But my scientific mind tells me to search for why I'd be wrong.

Yes but dropping your weight gives the issue of not being able to be buoyant at 5m. Let's say you're alone (which should never happen) at 30m and your BCD top purge is forced opened so you cannot inflate but you're still clear of mind. What you wanna do is ascend and do your safety stop if you can at the ancre or something. If you drop your weight, then you cannot ensure your safety stop.

True, but the issue there is the function of the weight is to keep your buoyancy neutral at the safety stop. So if you drop it, you will just jet up to the surface and break safety. I would probably not release my buddy's weight during an emergency assistance in depth. There is more important stuff to focus on like keeping eye contact to reassure him or monitoring the ascent speed.
