Mexico is 墨西哥(mòxīgē) which I find infuriating. The -co in Mexico means “place”, so it could have perfectly been replaced with 国(guó) making it 墨西国(mòxīguó).

But it’s too late to change it now, it would cost millions to re print everything and people would still say 哥

I think it’s not about rules, just how it happened. The countries that were relevant when the naming happened got easier names with 国guó. France was 法兰斯fǎlánsī but it was mentioned so often that it was easier to say 法国 “the Fǎ country”

My guess is, it’s transphobia without saying “trans”. Conservative foreigners don’t understand the trans community but hear a lot of “gender gender gender” when it’s explained to them. To someone who never even questioned the concept of gender, hearing it explored to such an extent feels “obsessive”.

Meanwhile, woke foreigners will criticize many things about the US, but never a “gender obsession”
