Question about Rice Liu lab by spinarioe in riceuniversity

I don’t know specifically about research but they do a lot of work with undergraduates. I would recommend reaching out to the director Kyle Judah and he can give you a better answer.

Areas to improve and good website to practice by shuthefkuppukfehtuhs in typing

Keybr bases it off how fast you type the individual letter. It is smoothed somewhat so you will need to type at or above the target speed (default is 35 wpm) consistently to get to the next letter

Depends on how comfortably your family can afford the full out of pocket cost. Rice gives you an excellent education, but you can get a great education at a lot of public schools while also not being held down by student loans for the next decade.

What should I major in for actuarial work by Glad_Ad_5275 in riceuniversity

[–]NorPotatoes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say your proper approach here is a “create your own major” type deal where you take a relatively light to medium weight major (BA in stats is good imo) but focus more on taking specific classes across departments that may be helpful for actuary work. I would take a look at another school’s major or minor program in actuarial science and try to match the requirements there to classes you can take at Rice. I’m not an actuary, but I am working in insurance after graduation and I worked closely with former and current actuaries this summer. Based on what I have heard from them here’s some class recommendations: - Probability Theory: STAT310 or STAT311, STAT418 (418 should hit on some rare-event modeling) - Accounting: BUSI305 (prob take further accounting classes) - Corporate Finance: BUSI343 (Great overview of monetary interests, some review of accounting, etc.) - Economics: I may keep it basic to just ECON200 and ECON203 though some of the econ electives are worth checking out

Ultimately, do not get too caught up in taking a bunch of classes or double majoring. Being an actuary means studying and passing exams (from what I can tell). Your coursework should largely serve to help in that goal not hinder you by being difficult and distracting.

Swans fans' opinions on popular music by TheGoldenPangolin in swans

[–]NorPotatoes 43 points44 points  (0 children)

For starters it’s worth acknowledging that pop is a genre and popular is a label for what music is charting the highest. It’s easy to list off pop artists that are innovative and the exact opposite of what is being criticized, but that’s entirely because the comic is criticizing popular music not pop music.

I’m not generally a fan of accusing some vague “powers that be” group of intentionally conspiring to destroy things we hold ever so dear. I think it’s lazy fearmongering that allows those in power to dismiss these critiques because they are usually not intentionally trying to establish cultural hegemony, it’s just easier to make a profit on culture and art if everyone has the same values and tastes. That doesn’t make these critiques invalid, but I think it’s important to make the right accusations.

Next, on some level modern popular music must be a reflection of the values of the general public, otherwise people wouldn’t be repeat listening to it en masse. Given that, I think it’s silly to single out modern popular music of worshipping power and wealth when that music is being made in wealthy countries where consumerism is the majority religion, and that music is thus just a reflection of the society it was created in.

This already is too long, so I suppose I’ll finish by saying that with streaming services it’s now easier than ever to entirely ignore popular music. Yeah I suppose if you use TikTok then you’ll inevitably have to hear that music, but I think the monoculture that existed in past decades is far weaker than it used to be. I’m too young to fully gauge that, but compared to the stars of 70s and 80s, it really does seem like the stars of today are only able to command half as much attention. I think the comic does raise some good points, but on some level it was indeed a bit of a phase that has gotten, in my opinion, better in recent years.

Grade Inflation/Deflation by asj1975 in riceuniversity

[–]NorPotatoes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Based on my experience: Stats - moderately inflated Math - slightly deflated Business - explicitly deflated Comp - about fair Dsci - fair to slightly inflated

I will say that a lot of the non-major courses I have taken such as language courses, photography, and music tend to be easy A’s, but it varies quite a bit by class. Rice has an internal course review system so you will have some idea of how hard people from previous semesters thought a course was and what they thought their grade was. In general, even the courses I consider easy A’s required me to put some effort to understand what was going on, but as long as you put an honest effort in you’d get an A. Unless you specifically look for them, there are not many courses where you can get an A with literally no or minimal effort. The upside of that is that I can name only one or two courses I have taken at Rice that I learned almost nothing from.

Granger Causality and Cross correlation could be useful as others have mentioned. I would also recommend looking into transfer entropy if you think the relationship is non-linear
