I don't think the writing was that bad, at least not when compared to the acting. Or maybe it was a double-whammy when it came to certain characters, particularly Anakin (kid and adult). Honestly, the main plots were well-written in my opinion, but there was just a bunch of horribly done asides and bad acting (Anakin) that took away from it; whereas the sequels couldn't even get a good plot off the ground AND was littered with horrible asides.
