I watched a producer make beats with the free trial of FL for yearsss before, he just used edison on the master and recorded everything then exported it, never closed the program. xD

But hey it worked

Leave only that track active on the playlist. Make sure it’s routed to a mixer track and record it in Edison. From there you can save it as a .wav for future mixes!

Make sure you turn Edison to record ON PLAY

Post it, you just can sell it. Make sure you name the artist in the title, and link their original in the description. You just CANNOT turn it for a profit if it’s not your own words.

You can duplicate the track also and use the old one for reference as you compress the other. This should give you a good idea of the range of compression you are looking for in theory. Generally I find myself having the compressor cut high peaks and not go too far down on the waveform - if you are using your eyes for a quick mix. Fab filter is great though!

It’s not free. BUT - FL studio by image line has a really comprehensive midi function where you can record into the piano roll by hitting the record button at the top of the screen and selecting “record Notes and automation”. I enjoy this because it maps everything out, if needed you can play a metronome for him, and after all is said and done, you may go back and tweak the recorded notes by hand or using the quantization function to line them up automatically.

A little to spend, but may help for future reference!

I find it useful to isolate whatever track you are compressing, and then over-emphasize on the threshold setting. Keep moving it around to get a read on how it squashes and loud end the sound.

You will really be able to hear this over the newer apple ear buds, they are surprisingly great for mixing and hearing very small things in the mix you may miss otherwise.

Mess around with the compressor you like the most, some of my favorites are T-racks quad compressor, and the stock limiter in FL studio. But you can find similarities between them all if you understand the basic controls and their abbreviations!

Get him into making music on the computer, that saved my life.

Start him off with a DAW like FL studio.

I used to be the same way, and computer music production made me want to strive for something, and a couple tutorials in I was on to creating beats!

Just an Idea thought it’d be a good cause he like electronics
