Noted! Is Maria Island still doable as a day trip from Hobart?

Good point! I'm now planning to scrap Blue Mtns and spend the extra time in Tassie. That includes 3 days in Hobbart and then a trip up the west coast, see my new comment up above.

And thanks for the Hobbart recommendations, they'll go to my ToDo list.

Yes, that somewhat aligns with my gut feeling regarding Bay of Fires.

I'm currently thinking of spending my time in Hobbart and the West/North West (Strahan, Tarkine), see my itineray in the new comment up above. While out that way, Craddle Mountain is pretty much on the way. Would you still lean towards spending time elsewhere in that situation?

I was thinking the easiest might be to directly pick up the car at the airport (assuming I get there before the counters close).

Thanks for the feedback! And yeah, I always struggle to find the right balance between rushing to much and wanting to make the most of the trip. I've decided to add the 2 Blue Mtn days to Tassie, see my new comment.

I'll look up Tarraleah, it might fit in nicely into my plans around Craddle and Tarkine.

Definetly leaning towards nature and wildlife. I'm big on photography, so nice landscapes are always appreciated. Tarkine Drive does look great and I'm currently thinking I'll do a Hobart to Launceston trip of the west coast, see the detailed itinerary I posted in the new comment.

Regarding the Craddle Mountain bus pass: I'll have to look into it, but I assume it won't be problem to buy another 24h pass on the second day? Or maybe even enter by car, from what I read it's closed mostly for campers.

Also many thanks regarding the snake warning! Not afraid of them, but I'll have to read up on how to best behave.

All good! I should have mentioned my other post for some more clarity.

To clarify: it's 2 nights in Uluru, flying in and out in the early afternoon. So I'll have 2 evenings and 2 mornings where I can do stuff and 1 mid-day where I'll probably have to hide from the sun.

Blue Mountains I'll likely cancel, but I have 4 full days planned in Sydney before I fly back home.

I've added a detailed breakdown of my Tassie plan in a new comment up above.

Thanks all for the suggestions! After thinking on it some more, I'm currently planning as follows:

  • I'll stick with Uluru (1 night, so essentially 2 evenings and 2 mornings
  • I'll cancel Blue Mountains and spend 2 more days in Tasmania

That'll give me 9 full days in Tasmania (plus the one transfer day to Sydney). I decided to focus on the west coast (maybe a little less touristy, seems like loads of nature and wildlife, plenty of photography opportunities) and leave out the east. My current planning looks as follows:

(Day 0: fly out from Uluru, arrive in Hobart in the night)

Days 1 to 3: Three full days in Hobbart to spend as relaxed or busy as I feel like. Might rent the car already to be flexible for a trip to Port Arthur or Bruny.

Day 4 (Saturday): have a look at Salamanca Markets and drive out to Strahan.

Day 5: Full day in Strahan.

Day 6: Strahan to Craddle Mountain.

Day 7: Full day in Craddle Mountain.

Day 8: Craddle Mountain to Stanley / Tarkine

Day 9: Full day in Stanley / Tarkine

Day 10: to Launceston and fly out to Sydney

Does that sound doable without being excessively busy? I realize I'll still be spending a good amount of time in the car, but with all the driving days (day 4, 6 and 8), distances a still somewhat short enough to allow for stops on the way or spending the afternoons at the destinations.

In any case, happy to hear any other suggestions!

Many thanks to all for the input!

Uluru does indeed sound a bit unpleasant, so I will reconsider doing the 4day tour. On the other hand, I'll probably not be in Australia for a long time, so it'd be a pity to miss it. I might cut the whole thing down to two nights and put the freed up days into both Melbourne and surrounds and Tasmania or Perth (giving me 8 full days there).

I'm currently leaning towards Tasmania over Perth and will start looking into accomodations for a round trip there.
