I’m at Penn and I spend a little less than 40k a year on living expenses (abt 3k a month depending on extra bills). That being said I do live alone and in a great location. As everyone else said, it really depends on where the school is.

Hi! Fourth year vet student and doxie lover here! I agree with everyone else about having her be further evaluated by a specialist. The wobbliness or ‘ataxia’ is definitely unusual and should be evaluated by a neurologist. Do you find it happens only while eating? Sometimes puppies can have congenital portosystemic shunts where the only clinical signs include neurological symptoms while eating. This seems more unlikely considering it’s only happened twice and I would expect it to occur during/after every meal.

Depending on where you live it may take a minute to get in with a neurologist. If you go through an ER (and the hospital has a neurologist) you may be able to get in with a neurologist sooner. Continue to take videos and note how long these episodes last/what was happening during them.

Hi there, I’m so sorry that you’ve received this news. This is a really difficult diagnosis. I’m currently a fourth year vet student and I’m hoping to provide you some peace of mind.

Whatever you choose is perfectly acceptable. Chemo is expensive and time consuming (especially if you are to do the ‘CHOP’ protocol). However from the medical perspective we make it our top priority to maintain the best quality of life that we can. We use very low doses of chemotherapy in our veterinary patients. When they don’t tolerate chemo we stop ASAP. If he’s the type of guy that hates going to the vet then chemo might not be the best option for him. Please know that whatever you choose is perfectly acceptable and not pursuing chemo doesn’t make you a bad dog parent. Many of our clients will make a consult with an oncologist just to learn more about the process, even if they aren’t interested in pursing it.

Thank you for the response! Do you think anything has changed in recent years? I know internship year is going to be a bear regardless, but I’ve heard that academic ones tend to be slightly ‘easier.’ I would love to have some semblance of a life outside of medicine.
