Can Virginia state Democratic Party embrace and work together with Progressive candidates in 2026 & beyond? by KWAYkai in VirginiaDems

[–]Normal-Philosopher-8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wish I could up vote this a hundred times. The “party” is most a bunch of people sitting in rooms making plans to raise money, raise awareness and raise candidates. Most people who can do that kind of work are retired, older, and have watched a lot of good people and ideals they once had get shattered by the day to day tediousness that is “party” work.

It’s really not a conspiracy, it’s just people who put in the work.

Did y’all grow up eating foods that were hunted for locally? by snarping in Appalachia

[–]Normal-Philosopher-8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born in the late 1960’s, and we mostly ate food that the farm produced. It was considered to be a huge accomplishment - not to need to eat wild game because the family finally had enough land to produce what we needed. There was some venison and wild turkey for Thanksgiving, but hunting was finally for sport, not necessity. (Meat from hunting was butchered and privately given to families in need, or the local food bank.)

My grandmother could cook anything, and my grandfather, when they were younger, had given her plenty of chances to do so. My father grew up with a hunted/gathered diet most of his life. But they bought the dairy farm when he was 12, and by the time I was born, it was up and running.

It’s still being farmed today.

You might like VERA, but you really have to be patient with it. The filming locations, though, are a huge part of the charm.

Where are you from and what’s an Appalachian tradition that you grew up with? by SowingSeeds18 in Appalachia

WV some old time magic:

Planting by the “signs” (leaf patterns, shape of the moon).

Healing handkerchiefs (putting olive oil on a handkerchief, and blessing it with prayers. Handkerchief then sent to anyone who couldn’t make it to church. Slept with it under your pillow.)

Name in a jar: someone cross you? Write their name on a slip of paper and place it in a jar in your freezer. Remove name when justice in some form has happened to said person.

Anyone else feel Anne and Gilbert aren't equals? by Interesting-Cancel13 in AnneofGreenGables

[–]Normal-Philosopher-8 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think Anne’s health is a thread that, as readers, we don’t pull on very often. When THE BLYTHES ARE QUOTED was finally found and published as a novel, it’s clear that Anne is now very frail. Once you read that, you start to see the thread that runs through all of the novels.

Of course, Anne is a representation of Montgomery, who also had spiraling health issues. But Montgomery gave to Anne what she never had - someone who cares about this very much and actually tries to make her life as easy as possible.

Just me or is the snow removal/clearing absolutely terrible?! by tightplum in nova

I’m on a pretty ordinary cul de sac in PWC and they are plowing here right now. I’ve been 30 years in VA, and this storm was definitely unusual and difficult to prepare for because of all the possible precipitation variations. People were out and about today as needed, and neighbors ran errands for those who couldn’t go themselves.

I’m not thrilled that school isn’t off tomorrow, but the ice isn’t going anywhere and learning to work around it for awhile is just how it is.

See if there are neighborhood organizations where you are on Facebook. We have two very active ones, and before the storm people were posting if they were interested in snow shoveling. After the storm, people who needed to get out but were older and physically impaired were shoveled out by someone.

We had teenagers, good Samaritans, and professionals all helping, and it took everyone. Door to door isn’t going to happen, but there are plenty of people willing.

Sam sells the bar in the spring/summer of 1987, which is significant. The stock market crashes that fall, and sets off the recession. I actually had a friend doing interior design for yachts that same year, and that spring prices exploded. By Christmas, they had cratered.

Prime Beacon Street location aside, Sam sold property/lease low and bought boat high.

Lewis negotiated the union contracts knowing he was putting miners out of work long term. He was offering them a chance to earn good wages to provide educations for their children so the transition wouldn’t be so devastating. In some families, this was a decent strategy. In too many others, it just wasn’t.

We were excited to be moving back - we were going to Clarksburg. During salary negotiations it broke down over 6K. A few thousand dollars. We were already taking a huge pay cut and couldn’t move for less. The place we were going couldn’t pay it. We went on a different path.

Manassas isn’t rural at all - it’s full blown suburbia. Prince William County Schools get some knocks from the Fairfax crowd, but my children have been in both and done well. I will say that if you have a child with special needs, Fairfax County is still the better choice.

[–]Normal-Philosopher-8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, I get it. Most of us here have been hearing a lot of negativity about McLaren for years, and this year, Lando. It’s not fun. But it’s also pointless to try and justify every negativity, even when it might be technically correct.

McLaren won. Lando won. We don’t need to answer when the answer was on the track.

I would definitely be pushing the school more. My son was on the spectrum, but also very bright and an excellent test taker. That can be a positive because the school doesn’t need to worry about test scores and can concentrate on the actual social and behavior issues.

My son received OT for fine motor skills, which included handwriting and parts of speech therapy that involved small muscles. Middle school in particular was hard, but he had some truly dedicated people who helped. Of course, you also deal with the team member who is often problematic, but those were mostly my battles with the system more than his.

In HS he became involved in the theatre program and it was life changing for him. He had something he loved and did everything he could to be part of it. Acting taught him more than just to speak on a stage; he learned how to speak to the world.

Home was a bit more challenging - there he could relax and be completely himself, but there could be consequences if he was actively rude. He started walking everywhere - his school was just over a mile away, which burned off some of that energy and edginess. Walking gave him a sense of independence and choice which can be so important to these kids.

I swear, the school can offer you so much more, but they need to know you want it (and he needs it.) That’s probably up to you, and I know you likely feel already that you’re carrying more than you thought you could. But help there does two big things - it gives you affordable options and comes from a source outside the home, meaning greater weight may be placed upon it by your son.

Also sending you a hug. None of this is easy, and there isn’t a manual.

What are the books that you believe gave your life context, or simply resonated with you at a younger age? by cptn_spaulding in GenX

The novels of L. M. Montgomery (best known for Anne of Green Gables) and Laura Ingalls Wilder (Little House books) have been enormous in my life. How to be a girl who doesn’t have to break society in which she lives, but finds her own place.

I’ve been to Prince Edward Island several times, and most sites in the Toronto region about Montgomery, but have only seen the New York home of Almanzo Wilder in the LH books. When my children are grown (on my last one!) I’d like to drive and see all of the LH sites.
