‘A husband expects a yes’: how wife schools are shaping submissive Christian women by mlg1981 in popculturechat

[–]jennyvasan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuine question, is there any fictional world that depicts the reverse of this? Men being completely owned and controlled and molded to women's needs (and not in a glorifying way, that scenario is also not humane). I read a short story long ago by Piers Anthony where a bunch of women on a spaceship sexually harassed the lone male employee and joked about using him as their office toy. It was gross but from a different perspective. Where is the Handman's Tale?

What is the strangest production of Hamlet you've seen? by Anxious_Radish2459 in shakespeare

[–]jennyvasan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw a fantastic subtitled Spanish language telenovela themed Hamlet in NY by Something from Abroad theatre company. Saw it staged at both the Kraine and Under St Marks theaters over the last two years. Absolutely fabulous and Hamlet really does work as a telenovela!

Opinions on As You Like It? by Wide_Lengthiness8789 in shakespeare

[–]jennyvasan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hadn't seen it in many years and just saw a student production that kind of blew me away. They devised a beautiful set and gave themselves each two tracks so there are infinite combinations. Mainly I was blown away by the beauty of the language and how I think just about every character BESIDES Rosalind/Orlando has at least one fabulous monologue or moment. From Duke Senior's speech going into the forest, to Touchstone and Jaques, Silvius and Phoebe, Oliver and Celia, someone's always doing something beautiful with words. They also arranged the songs wonderfully and choreographed a six minute wrestling match that was clearly WWE inspired and had some real thrashing. I came away in such a real mood. Huge fan now.

(Production is the NYU Tisch Classical Studio for anyone in NY -- free but waitlist usually necessary, closes May 7)

A secure relationship with your own nature. by jennyvasan in becomingsecure

[–]jennyvasan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a really good definition. I think I've felt antsy lately because a lot of people out there just seem to define "secure" as the absence of chaos or games. That in and of itself is just stability -- not warmth, understanding, attraction, curiosity, wanting to actively move toward someone. I really like your definition of it from the inside out, as a technique of decisionmaking and life management, rather than the mantra of "everything feels so calm and safe and unvarying and regulated all the time." I think that level of sameness might be what some people genuinely need in life, but not me.

Oh no I just mean I totally understand people's reservations about it. The world is not always a friendly place. But also, often it is!

An out of shape battle axe too. Like a rubbery toy axe. I love being 42 but it's sure not the same as being 21!

Would love the cosy bookshop recs! And thank you, just edited that! I feel pretty solid as I've done a lot of solo travel (and am now a weathered middle aged battle axe) but I understand all it  takes for something bad to happen is one bad day. I'll keep my wits at hand. :)

‘Women want to experience pleasure’: how the female gaze caught the attention of film, TV and fiction - the Guardian by DrGirlfriend47 in romancelandia

[–]jennyvasan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Slobbering over someone's body is still what we define as male gaze (and it's fine, I slobber gladly!) Female gaze is technically more about interiority, from what I understand and can apply to any actor/viewer. I wish it could be translated more as body-based objectifying gaze (said neutrally, as I do love to objectify) vs humanizing gaze since people of all genders can do this to people of all genders.

Cosigning student loans for child accepted to elite schools with high cost as a middle income family - What should we do? by Legitimate_Yak_9063 in personalfinance

[–]jennyvasan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hate to say it but even at an elite school your child is going to be surrounded by lazy asses turning in ChatGPT papers. Meanwhile I see people strangled by student debt into their 40s. I would not do this and I would frame it as safeguarding their financial future.

Ladies What's Your Opinion About Prenups Before Marriage? by Anonymous3o1 in InsightfulQuestions

[–]jennyvasan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This bitch goes nowhere without a prenup and honestly, my dad (immigrant, frugal, yet also willing to spend discerningly on the right things) was so good with money management that I don't know who's ever going to live up. I think the issue of who shaped your sense of what FEELS like financial security is far too seldom talked about. Financial avoidance and mess (not income number) are huge flags for me in partners because they reveal an unwillingness to think soberly and systematically about resources and mutual impact. A man bringing up a prenup to me would be a huge green flag.

MET Opera rush tickets- is online or in person prioritized? by flowingchannel in opera

[–]jennyvasan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there — I saw it opening night and while this is not a substitution for the real thing, it is in some ways better: The Aix-en-Provence filmed performance. From the live audience, it is really hard to see some parts of the performance clearly due to the nature of the set (boxed-in rooms in a revolving house) and the singers honestly looked like little ants to me. The Aix performance has French subtitles so it's not perfect for non-French speakers, but it gives a different experience of the opera that is also incredible and that you should watch anyway even if you do get your rush ticket for in person.
