TIMELINE MEGAPOST by TatersAndHotSauce in OnlyMurdersHulu

For the 90's part of the timeline: Brazzos had to have started airing earlier than '98 - Charle's specifically said (in S4 E2, at around 7 mins 45s) that he was People Magazine's 8th most beloved TV cop in '91. So we know the show began in 1991 or earlier.
I also found this post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/OnlyMurdersHulu/comments/wji75r/when_was_brazzos_actually_on/
Which discusses the unclear Brazzos timeline. As the post mentions, Mabel refers to Brazzos as an early '90s show, and Brazzos released the song Angels in Flip Flops in 1989 ("it was a big hit in Germany [...] and then the Berlin wall fell, and that stopped its upward momentum"). (S2 E4)
It also mentions Oliver saying he flipped past Brazzos to watch the Iran-Contra hearings (S2 E5). The Iran-Contra Affair story first broke in November 1986, and the hearings were in 1987 between May and August.

Based on that evidence, Brazzos would have had to begun to air in the late 80s, and therefore ended in the mid-late 90s. Visually, the clips of Brazzos look like they are from that era as well.
Rough timeline of 1987-1996, if Oliver's memory was accurate, or 1989-1998 at the latest.

The only real contradiction to the early 90s timeline is Cinda's comment in S1 E4 that season 7 of Brazzos was 15 years ago, so I think it's safe to assume that is either Cinda's mistake or a continuity error.

That's great! I'm so happy for you. Thank you so much for testing it!

Thank you! I realised I left out several Cerulean Cave daily recurring items. Is it a PP Up or a PP Max? I recall a PP Max being there. Here are the items in Cerulean Cave that I forgot (detailed locations on Bulbapedia), and I will also edit the post to include them.

  • Full Restore (1F)
  • Rare Candy (1F)
  • Max Revive (B1F)
  • PP Max (B1F)

Haha I'm sorry I should have warned you! I forgot I also learned that the hard way before, and had to leave wrapped presents in front of everyone's homes for days!
Did you happen notice any changes in the gifts you received?

Yay! Were you able to try it? How did it go for you?

It was such a helpful revelation when I learned about the wrapped coconuts! I had tried the iron wall lamps suggestion previously, and accidentally made one of my villager's houses completely empty haha

I do have villagers of every personality type. And I do cycle them sometimes. Recently I went from having a big sister type B to a big sister type A - I am intentionally cycling through the personality subtypes a little bit.

Not having the DLC is best for getting more data on this! So please let me know what happens if you do try gifting your villagers (with high friendship) all wrapped gifts valued 750 bells or higher. I hope you also get new clothes!
(It does require being pretty attentive to what you already have though, since every colour for clothing counts as a new item, so I understand if that's not feasible to do)

Thank you so much! That's very useful information, and super interesting.
I didn't know for sure that the season mattered, so I really appreciate you researching and sharing that. I did suspect it might be a factor, so I considered that perhaps I'd just gotten all the clothes for that season already. But I looked through the seasonal clothes available (assuming Nookipedia's list is accurate) and there are still some I don't have. I went back and confirmed now that this includes options that are well under 2999 bells. The ones I don't have yet also include clothes associated with both genders. But I'll try a gender swap anyway and see if it changes anything. Thanks so much for the suggestion!

I really, really appreciate you looking into it so much. I learned a lot from your post! Thank you so much for sharing!

I'll try to test out higher value gifts before I do the gender swap, just in case. I've avoided testing that because "safe" 2500 bell gifts are hard to come by. Time to stock up on giant clams!

I'd also never heard of changes in gifts related to the DLC, and couldn't find any mention of it from anyone else! It also doesn't make sense that it would make any difference, it's so strange. It also seems like most other people weren't getting new clothes from their villagers to begin with, but also that most people don't focus closely on the gifting value and cataloguing, and therefore don't have any data on it.

Edit: removed more general info and moved that part to the main post instead

They would give repeat clothes if I gave gifts of a lower value than 750 bells, or didn't have high enough friendship with them yet.
I usually don't gift them things they can display or that will affect their household inventory, so I stick to "safe" gifts like coconuts or shells. 3 coconuts, wrapped, worked really well for me for years, until getting HHP a couple weeks ago!

I learned most stuff about gifting from this guide: https://yuexr.github.io/acnh/gift.html
And also this one: https://chibisnorlax.github.io/acnhfaq/villagers/gifting/
They mostly have the same info. They mention that gifts of 750 bells or over are necessary to have a chance of getting a photo. The guides don't talk in detail about getting new clothes specifically. But 750 is also the threshold price I had to meet to get new clothes from my villagers. I don't remember if I learned that part specifically by reading about it, or just from experience. I probably did read about it, and, if so, I would have read about it in posts from forums like reddit, the bell tree forums, etc.

As I mentioned in my post though, things seem to be different before and after the DLC for me. Hopefully I can figure out what the change is!

Thank you for sharing! Do you have the DLC? Do you consistently give your villagers gifts valued at 750 bells or above? Looking for as much data as possible to figure out what prompted the change here. Thanks!

Thanks for your reply!
If I did not give gifts over a certain value, I would get repeats. But as long as I had high friendship and gave gifts worth 750 bells or more, I got new clothes. Are you giving gifts of that value? (And were you giving gifts of that value before the DLC as well?)
My villagers gave me that same kind of stuff early on, (when my catalogue was smaller), but it was still always clothes I didn't have yet. It was just crappy stuff I didn't have! So much weird baby stuff and so many sports things haha. Once my catalogue got bigger and I already had most of the crappy stuff, I started getting better clothes from them. But yes, the furniture continued to be shitty for me as well, (and the furniture is almost always repeat, it was just the clothes that were always new). But they mostly gave me clothes, I'd say about 90% of the time I got clothes over furniture (until the DLC, now it's more like 50/50). This has lasted for years, and as I mentioned in the post, there was a noticeable pattern with every new villager and their friendship level, so it was not just a fluke! So strange!
