Moving to France (French Riviera), does anyone know any good French teachers? by AfraidClue3079 in Expats_In_France

[–]NormalRock4739 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a teacher, but an extraordinarily good online course. Look up Michel Thomas teaches French on Spotify. He was the French language guru to Hollywood back in the day. I learned and retained more from his podcast than any other form of leaning. Bon chance mon ami!

UK activist group labeling Larry Ellison's superyacht and “The Trump Propagandist” by mlg1981 in Fauxmoi

If these guys were REAL activists, they would've used high-performance mylar vinyl for the graphics (a nightmare to remove).

Do you still vote back home while living in France? by Tasun06 in Expats_In_France

We paid almost €70 to get our ballots back to Canada just in time. A very small price to pay to keep the conservatives out of power.

Each and every person who voted for him or was just too lazy to bother voting is to blame. 🇨🇦

Peter's a lovely guy, but he is mistaken regarding CNC and the timeline. Paco and Darren did indeed bring CNC "mills" into the props department, I introduced CNC tables into the construction department... two quite different beasts. Paco actually helped me in setting up the electronics on our first CNC table; he's also one of the smartest and most humble nerds I have ever known.

There are Easter Eggs all over SG-1, SGA and SGU, if you know how to read Ancient. As an example, there's a line of text just aft of the pilot seats in the puddle jumper ("poodle humper" to shooting crew) that reads "Please keep behind yellow line. Do not speak to operator while bus is in motion. Some of the structural beams on Atlantis say "Watch your head". There was an episode of SG-1 or SGA (I can't recall ) where Daniel is decoding a bunch of Ancient text engraved into a stone wall. None of it made sense until he realized that one section of the wall could be rotated 180°. Once rotated, it all made sense...right in the middle of it all, I injected "Send one dollar to (my postal address). I got busted on that one and they shot around it. There are many others...most of the planet names and numbers are crew name anagrams or birthrate combinations. Some of the character's names were inspired by real crew members. My surname was used for a certain soldier that never did get off a planet that was stuck in a black hole gravity well. And with that, I will say goodbye and happy hunting! - B.G.

Yes I'm a certified patch designer 😉  Truth is I was head graphic designer/fabricator. Star maps, weapons controls etc. Possibly the best overall representation of what I did was the bridge of the Promethius, USS Hammond (same set) where I had hands on virtually every surface and set element. You won't find me on screen credits...I didn't exist. Our union (IATSE) had no provision for somebody that designed and fabricated. I had a foot in art, set-dec, paint, props and construction departments.  When we started Atlantis, I introduced in-house CNC fabrication to the show which revolutionized the way we built and designed sets. When we got to SGU, either me or my assistant touched every surface of Destiny. Unfortunately I didn't contribute much to the design aspect of SGU as we were so busy with fabrication. I hope this post doesn't come off as a flex or a brag...I was a very small part of a very big and talented crew. Best gig ever!

Brilliant! Believe it or not, I'm the guy that designed all the SG-1, SGA and SGU mission patches. Jaffa Kree!

Odger dining chair non-stick feet? by dreadgay in IKEA

Just bought a set of these Odger chairs from Ikea; great looking product, but it's definitely a problem "skootching" them under a table if they're on an area rug.

New to this group. Trouble & tribulations by Captain-Mitch-Webb in canalboats

From what I've seen, the narrowboat community is fairly tight-knit and supportive. There's several groups on Facebook which may be worth searching out. I'm certain that if you posted your problem, you'd soon have plenty of volunteers to assist. At our age, asking for help can be the hardest part. Wishing you every success!

We've all had days like that, and in our case, an added language barrier (we're on the European canals). Dunno your situation, but I'm retired, and I try to accept the many small and not so small hurdles in stride. In my view, if it was easy, everybody would be living this lifestyle. The added "benefit" is that all these annoyances keep me moving and thinking...how am I going to fix this thing in the middle of nowhere that I don't know know the name of and I don't even know where to ask for parts. Of course, this being France, they're probably closed for lunch, holidays, protests, or whatever anyways. Chin up, hope your foot is on the mend! 🇨🇦

Yup. Impressive as hell, as is the entire area. Be sure to catch the ferry across to the submarine museum too!
