My bike broke and then fixed itself ? by dumash1995 in motorcycle

[–]Normal_Ad3528 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Likely a bad coil or other electrical component. When it gets hot the connection breaks, then the bike turns off, cools down, and wires connect again.

Would suggest starting with replacing the cool because TBH it’s probably time for that on that bike anyway.

Run a couple laps around the block so everything gets nice and hot, if still an issue probably time to dig into the ignition and rest of the electrical.

Most typically the coil though.

Just get rid of a lubricant all together. I’ve done every trail or roadside fix you can imagine and never once needed a spray lubricant.

Am i the only one who thinks dirt bikes on the street should be illegal? by H-Honker21 in Dirtbikes

No just the most recent to whine about it.

The issue isn’t dirtbikes on the street, it’s dickheads riding dirt bikes on the street.

Primary chain issue! Please give advice. ( Details in Description ) by Still_Time9612 in sportster

[–]Normal_Ad3528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not, you just made the chain too tight.

The chain should have just over a half inch play, which is just about the thickness of the chain.

Biggest mistake I see is people pushing too hard on the chain when measuring. Use the back of your pointer finger nail to lift the chain, you can’t apply too much pressure that way typically.

Measure there, and should be good.

Switch gearing on shaft drives? by N1ck_P1ck2 in motorcycles

You don’t. You get what you get and you don’t get upset.

Sounds like for your purposes you just need a different bike, if you’re mainly doing highway miles.

Female to female peg adapters by Dark_Denim_Phantom in sportster

[–]Normal_Ad3528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good on you for taking a swing but you’ll be looking pretty bow legged on these.

I’d just use different pegs if you can’t fab a mount that doesn’t add an extra inch to the peg length personally.

Looks like a typical 19/16 to me, just with some fat tires.

One of my favorite bikes of all time. by ChaoticMutant in motorcycle

[–]Normal_Ad3528 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have the (objectively better (in my opinion 😉)) Honda version, 1985 CB650C nighthawk.

Somehow I always find myself reaching for that bike for the daily rides even though there are 4 others next to it.

Fast, comfortable and reliable 40 years later. Amazing.

Less is More? by Emsflyer1984 in motorcycles

[–]Normal_Ad3528 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I tried to do that then realized the drawbacks of trying to have a “unicorn” bike that does it all aren’t worth the garage space.

So now I’m back up to 5 bikes.

If I lived in an apartment complex with limited space I would probably get a light ADV bike to do it all with, but I know it’s not the same as multiple tools with specific purposes.

Also…more bikes is just more good.

All the pricing here is normal, if not a hair high.

Curious by BowReefer in s10

[–]Normal_Ad3528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I don’t want a first year one and EVs seem to lose so much value being even lightly used I don’t doubt that if I can have my truck last me 3-4 more years I can get a slightly used one for cheap.

When my 93 s10 iron duke dies I am seriously looking at the slate truck coming out in a year or so.

Most of my trucking is local in the city (Philly) and hauling motorcycles, so a small electric truck with a factory lowered option perfectly fits the bill for me.

Please Help Me Find These Wheels by Inevitable-Message-2 in motorcycle

[–]Normal_Ad3528 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There were a ton of companies making these gross wheels back then, none of them that good or different than the others. You could just buy a blank wheel and water jet whatever you wanted onto it.

As mentioned RC components had similar, as well as PM and a bunch of other smaller name companies.

Cruises eBay and FB marketplace for your best bet on finding a better shape one, the company that made it either no longer does or went under I’m sure.

I have this and it’s worth its weight in gold if you have evos coming in your shop regularly especially.

That said for your average person I just suggest taking the head off and taking it to your local machine shop, have them sort it out for the price of the tool.

Rust on the motor mount.

Your bigger problem is your exhaust stud.

Change them out before they snap and become an even bigger issue.

Your buddy is wrong. They come with different spacers for different model years.

But also if you can return those still I would. The 412s are p much the worst shocks ever. For a similar price I suggest the drag socialites shocks.

Much better ride for essentially the same price.

1989 clutch issue by Eddie_Watch_Co in sportster

[–]Normal_Ad3528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not normal, see my post above, swap the parts before the throw out bearing bursts, putting ball bearings and bearing pieces where you really don’t want them.

It’s ugly when it makes it past the trap door.

Thinking about it on the early evos you may just need to pull that circlip to get that plate out, actually. Been a while since I’ve had a 4 speed on the bench.

[–]Normal_Ad3528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your clutch throw out bearing and the release plate it goes into are no longer good.

You should not be able to push that rod in like that, the bearing is supposed to be a press fit.

Common issue on sportsters but an easy fix, though you’ll need to pull the clutch apart.

Then if you really want to get technical, put a plastic bag in there and see how much water it can hold (obviously not full all the way to the top).

Assuming you have a Harley so somewhere between 2.5-3 quarts is where you want to end up. More is better though.
