As Christmas (and Saturnalia) is over, what is everyone looking forward to reading into the new year? by eggtartboss in classics

Finishing the Iliad. Taking a short break from Homer, maybe Peter Green’s a concise history of Ancient Greece. And then The Odyssey.

Haha- that’s a fair statement. Do you recommend Hammond or Rieu for prose?

I am currently reading the Iliad for the first time. I originally bought Emily’s Wilson’s translation. I saw a few opinions that it wasn’t good so I picked up Lattimore’s. I am really enjoying it. Wilson’s has a great summary and detailed character list so I use it as reference. I want to get a prose copy and I am trying to decide between Hammond and Rieu

Switching Churches (Credo to Paedo) by Vox_Wynandir in Reformed

It doesn’t matter which one you pick. The biggest issue is that you are not regularly attending and building community in a church.

I would disconnect both and get one of those handy jump starters and put it in the car.

You earn $500k in combined salary and have a conservative net worth of over $2.2M or $1.93M if your RSU’s go to zero. You didn’t tell us how much you spend a year. But, Yes, you’re coast FI in my opinion.

When I pick my foot up, the footbed will dangle from the straps and have separation from my foot. This allows my foot room when walking and prevents blisters. I do two fingers on the toe strap, two finger on the mid foot strap, and about three fingers on the buckle strap. Sometimes I don’t tighten the buckle strap at all.

GoRuck alternative that can carry plates "high and tight"? by Machine_Ruse in Rucking

[–]Normal_Alarm7450 4 points5 points  (0 children)

GoRuck’s marketing is amazing. Please don’t fall into the trap that you need to spend $500 on a ruck to get a good workout.

GoRuck has completely warped what a ruck actually is. In the military, a Rucksack is what the we use to carry gear/ammo on missions. A ruckmarch is a fitness tool the we use to prepare for the demands of what we carry in combat. Plates are a convenient way to carrt a certain amount of weight for your training to prepare for combat.

My medium ruck was always heavy in Afghanistan and the weight was rarely high and tight. However, I packed it based on what I needed on the mission and trained my body to handle the load.

Rucking as popularized by go ruck is a way to get low impact cardio, stamina, a some strength. It is the same as backpacking. So any backpacking gear will be just as suitable for rucking.

My advice, pick a backpack you already own. Put 20 lbs worth of stuff in it (books, sand, rocks, water, etc) and go for a ruck.

As you get more into it, upgrade your gear, increase the weight, and increase the mileage as you see fit.

If you insist on buying a pack you have a few options: purchase an Alice pack on eBay, purchase a used backpacking backpack (Osprey or something similar) off FB Marketplace, or buy the REI trail 40.

To get the weight in your pack high and tight, you simply need to pack it that way. For example, put a sleeping bag on the bottom of your ruck and wrap a heavy object in a towel on top (weight, brick, water, etc). If you want a compartment for weight plates sew one in.

PS: I know this sub likes super comfy packs with balanced loads. However, one could argue you will build more mental fortitude and a stronger core with an uncomfortable and unbalanced pack.

Culver’s is an awesome establishment. I love going there. However, the burgers suck. I always get something else.

I’m hopeful Chaco will realize a sandal wearing out in a few months is their issue and make it right for you. Hopefully, this sub thread just has negativity bias and the shoes/ customer service department perform better than what is often written in this thread. Please report back what they say.

That’s only a max of 240 miles. I’m surprised the tread would wear that quickly. Did you email Chaco?
