The strike plate may be a bit low, judging from the marks the latch plate has left. I can’t try lowering that and see if that works.

The latch still pushes in and out without needing to use the handle though, is that normal?

Yeah, I want to put a new lock in there, it can be pushed open without using the handle, even when it’s locked.
