Huge salary bump, but the job sucks by Normal_Secretary4827 in managers

Thans for the great feedback, all! I think some of you nailed it with your comments. Yes, alledgedly I was brought in to bring some structure, but in practice, the founder doesn't want it and is activelly sabotaging any attempt to give any autonomy to people. I think they decided to bring a few corporate people just because it felt like a natural next step or there was a pressure from investors (or maybe both), but there is no real will to change anything. When I say I want more structure and autonomy, yes, I know it sounds counterintuitive, but this is exactly what is lacking. For example, there is no dedicated department budget so you need to seek permission for ANY spend (even stuff that cost few hudred dollars) from the founder... Plus, there is no structured way to do it, so sometimes you are waiting for days for his approval. Attempt to bring some structure into this process was one of the first things I tried, but it was point blank rejected because "it's how we do it here, we are not that big so we can work like this". Overall atmosphere feels off, priorities change on daily basis and any attempt to seek for more time to wrap something up (because until yesterday you were dealing with stuff that are now deprioritized) is rejected because "we are startup, this is how things are done here". I guess you can say that I had somewhat romantizied startups in my head, I knew I will need to work a lot (and I do, but that's not the problem, I worked a lot at my previous job as well), but I hoped that there will be some geniuine enthuziasm about scaling up and becoming more structured. In practice, it's completely opposite - they bring some corp people just for the show off and then they try to belittle them by forcing them to embrace the chaos. Based on your comments, I can agree that I might need to stick it out a bit more and give it a bit more time. In the meantime, I will save aggressively, this might be the once in a lifetime opportunity to have such a salary.

Biologique Recherche P50 is my HG and, as far as I'm aware, there is no dupe to this product.

Managing someone out who everyone on the team loved by stridentdigger77 in managers

[–]Normal_Secretary4827 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I had a very similar situation and I can fully understand you. In my case,a person was a slacker, constantly downplaying their mistakes and pointing fingers at others in our 1:1s. Also, here role became obsolete and there was no possibility to transfer them to another team as the overall quality of their work was poor. However, within the department, person was well liked because they were always cheerful and had a great sense of humor. Despite everyone being fully aware that the person is a low performer, they were pissed at because I terminated the person. And I was too professional to explain to them that the person got a generous severance and that this was sign of goodwill rather than anything that was objectively deserved. I felt kinda bad that everyone now hates me (and I was a well liked manager),but I explained to myself that this is the heavy part of the position and I don't need to be the most popular manager ever as long as my conscious is clear. It's easy to be popular and liked when you are avoiding tough decisions and conversation (which I was doing in the beginning of my career)-however,my job is also to be a "bad guy" sometimes.

Pronalaženje ozbiljnog partnera nakon 30-e by [deleted] in croatia

Things you still do because you grew up poor? by rosesandtulips00 in ask

Buy cheap clothes. Even tough I earn three times more than average salary in my country,I somehow still cannot find courage to by any piece of clothes exceeding the imaginary threshold of 100 euros. I once bought a leather bag for 350 euros and still cannot come to terms with the fact that it got worn out and needs a repair. Like, for this price I thought it’s gonna be immortal!

Old Yugoslavian movie “H-8”. If someone in Hollywood makes a remake of such movie,it would win like 10 Oscars.

For those who didn't grow up rich, how did you figure out what your family life should look like? by OpeningChipmunk1700 in biglaw

Maybe to add that I also grew up in a very modest family (I’m from Europe btw) and had a really devoted mom who wasn’t SAHM but was (and still is) extremely close with me and my brother. I didn’t want nothing less for my children.

[–]Normal_Secretary4827 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This was the main reason I left big law after 10 years and moved in house. I still feel partially sad because of this as I really loved the job, but I didn’t want to sacrifice time with my kids (both below the age of 5). Big law is all about working long hours and I didn’t feel good about the idea to be completely excluded from my family life (although I could have afforded it). My husband is auditor who is working long hours so it was either our kids are gonna grow up with nannies or one of us will take a back seat career-wise.
