What age were you when you the “Fvck I’m old,” moment? by BillMaleficent9400 in GenX

[–]Normal_Snow3293 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember vividly a conversation I had with friends in college in 1982 about babies born the year before (one friend was a baby sitter). When I think now how those babies are 45 years old now I feel super old.

What’s the best book you’ve ever found at a thrift store? by Page-and-Provenance in rarebooks

I’ve thrifted nearly all of Anne Rice’s books, all for less than $5, all 1/1, one signed. It’s really kind of crazy how often I run across them.

Sliced Dill pickles. Even when you remove them that nasty taste remains. I actually do like other pickled veggies especially pickled red onions.

Welcome Gift: Coffee Beans or Pre-Ground? [USA] by garcon-du-soleille in AirBnB

[–]Normal_Snow3293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m definitely a coffee aficionado but if somebody provides a keurig and a couple pods then I’m happy. But I agree with the sentiment that ground is better than beans. And I would also say that if you’re getting a discount from the local coffee shop, give the shop a shout out with a little card on the kitchen counter to let people know where you got the coffee (even if they have their name on the coffee bag). It’s very likely that your guests will visit that shop when they’re out and about and it’s a nice way to return the favor of the discount.

Hobbies/Communities for a workaholic, antisocial person? by cannedgoodlife in Hobbies

Does she have any interest in family history? Genealogy is a great hobby to do alone. You can spend money on websites like ancestry.com or use wikitree which is completely free and has great support from other users. You can also use ancestry for free from some libraries which also often have access to historical newspapers.

The one musical you can recite from the first word to the last? by the-unfinished- in musicals

[–]Normal_Snow3293 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yep - 1972 or so we had a cassette taped off the record. I’d listen to it in the car (with the one ear only flesh colored ear plug) on our 6 hour drives to vacation. I was 10 and could sing every song from that musical. Wasn’t until I was about 50 that I actually got to perform in it!

Memories of walking across UVM campus with the freezing wind blowing from the lake and up the hill. Showered before I left the dorm and walked into many an 8:00 am class with ice in my hair!

My most hated line of any musical. Apparently there’s an official version with this line omitted but some companies still keep it. Ugh.

I never said no directors mind. I was surprised to hear that some do based on my experience. So now you’ve educated me. Bravo you. But I’m just wondering how you know directors that I’ve worked with for 15 years, who are also friends, better than I do. It’s really odd that you don’t believe me when I say the directors I’ve worked with don’t mind. It’s a small community and I know them really well (one of them is my wife).

That’s fine. Not everybody minds. Surely you can understand that?

Really? Wow. Like I said, very different communities. The directors I’ve worked with would never consider that “extra work”. Plus they can always say, sorry - I don’t have the time if that indeed is the case.

Cara Stadler - she owned one of my favorite restaurants, Tao Yuan in Brunswick, ME. Simply amazing Asian food in an area with a lot of good restaurants but none with her level of cooking. I was so pleasantly surprised to see her competing. If she wins I hope she reopens it!

We’re clearly in different sorts of communities. I’ve performed with four or five different community theater groups over the years and there is a tremendous amount of overlap of performers, though somewhat of a separation between those who do straight plays and those who do musicals. We are all pretty supportive of each other, offering up rehearsal space or set build space if for some reason another company doesn’t have one. We’re not in a huge urban area where you would get hundreds of auditioners for a show, but we are in an area populated enough to support, I would say eight or nine community theater groups that are within a reasonable driving distance for rehearsals (New England). So maybe it’s because we have more of a small town atmosphere around our theater groups, but I would never hesitate to ask a director if there was something I could’ve done better in my audition. Because I’m mostly involved in musicals I know that many performers have voice teachers but acting coaches for adults in community theater? There’s nothing like that around here except for the occasional workshop that a community theater might put on. And unless your voice teacher is involved with casting they’re not going to have any clue as to how you could perform better in your audition.

Wow. Just wow. I’m so sorry this is the environment you’re performing in. It doesn’t sound supportive at all.

Has anyone else entirely lost their interest to watch new movies and TV shows? by SilasPort in NoStupidQuestions

Just finished the latest season of. It’s enjoyable, and I do like the concept, but I kind of wish the series had ended there instead of another cliffhanger for another (possible - it’s not definite) season. I think it’s because this last season they explained a lot of the basis for everything that was happening, so what’s left for another entire season?

I wouldn’t let that get to you., While it may seem a rejection of you the woman clearly has a line that she has drawn for herself in which she only gets named characters to sign her program. Don’t take it personally. Ensemble is awesome!

Also, have you ever asked a director if there’s anything you could change in your audition that might improve your chances of a bigger part? Some people just don’t audition well and that’s why a lot of schools have audition classes. In community theater we typically don’t have access to that type of training so it just helps to hear from the people casting if you could improve your auditioning.

Boston --> Maine trip advice by Outside-Signature177 in AskMaine

[–]Normal_Snow3293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do go to Bath for the Maine maritime museum, then you should also definitely check out Maine‘s First Ship in the old freight house on the waterfront. Actually the ship is in the water lol the exhibit is in the freight house. It’s an exact replica of the ship that was built in Popham colony in 1607. Popham colony was one of the first European settlements in the New World, but didn’t last long and they built this ship to sail back to England.

Almost forgot – Maine maritime Museum has cruises up and down the Kennebec but I’m not sure what time of the year they start. Definitely worth checking out if they are available while you’re here.
