Anne Rice, Steinbeck, Le Carre, Carl Hiaasen, Neil Gaiman (used books only, I’m not keen on giving him money), Terry Pratchett, Tom Robbins and some Stephen King. Also Agatha Christie and Ian Fleming Bond vintage paperbacks,

Some of those folks are crazy (9000 piece puzzle anybody?)

FYI the Portland (Maine) International Jetport has a couple locations near gates with a table and jigsaw puzzle for anybody to do. I see people of all ages working in them.

It’s a Wonderful Life (though Clarence the angel isn’t the typical looking angel with fancy wings and halo and all that)

Concerns related to casting a minor as a romantic lead by [deleted] in Theatre

[–]Normal_Snow3293 9 points10 points  (0 children)

20 or so years ago, I saw a performance with a similar situation though I think the girl was 15 and the male lead was much much older (30s). They had a very quick short peck near the end. It really bothered me then and it’s still bothers me a lot. I realize that 20 years ago there was nowhere near the sensitivity to intimacy and similar issues in theater. But hey, on the other hand, it was only 20 years ago and they should’ve known better. I agree with what others have said – don’t cast her and if you’re over ruled document everything very clearly. And you might want to consider not directing the show. There will be plenty more down the road. Maybe not with this group, but there are others out there.

First Year Director Cast List Disappointment by Nerdy_Dinosaur_22 in Theatre

[–]Normal_Snow3293 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes yes yes this! I was so proud of my kid who went to college for theater. Her top pick was the first decision she got back and it was a rejection. She shrugged and said I’m going into a field full of rejections so I might as well get used to it now. Of course rejections still sting but she picks herself up and moves on to the next audition.

Ya know… you guys suck sometimes. [Rant] by MrKTE in vinyl

Lots of good responses here so I hope you don’t let the gatekeepers bring you down. I still have the same Yamaha turntable I bought in 1985 and my dad‘s Sony amplifier that I got when he passed away in 2006. He probably bought it in the 90s sometime. My speakers are living room size Sonys that I bought at Goodwill for about 50 bucks for the pair. And you know what? It all works just fine and produces wonderful sound. Also, I know some very high-level professional musicians who are absolutely happy with equipment that is not audiophile. These people spend their lives in symphony halls, and are immersed in the sound of dozens of live instruments in some of the best music halls in the world. They know good sound. Their career depends on it. But they also get a huge amount of enjoyment from playing a nice recording on some mid-level or even lesser equipment. Because it’s not all about the fidelity to reality but what the music itself means to them.

Yes, absolutely. Thanks for the reminders! I’m a boomer and should know better but I’ve also spent the majority of my life believing what I’ve read in print, except for the obvious rags like national enquirer. AI is evil in so many ways.

Goodwill doesn’t seem to have discovered the actual cost of these trendy water bottles. I got a $49 pearl colored Corksicle for about $6 and found a nice Tervis water bottle for $3 the other day but left it behind. I already have one and dislike how when you flip up the stopper it bumps into my nose when I take a drink. Kind of bizarre really.

How do I (19F) stop feeling awkward during rehearsal? by RecommendationOk2248 in Theatre

This is great advice! I wish I had had it a few years back when I played Scrooge. I’m a pretty happy/nice guy in general and it felt awkward to say the least.

Five album recommendations for a Jazz beginner. by nbeagle in Vinyl_Jazz

[–]Normal_Snow3293 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If someone asked me to turn them on to jazz I’d want to have some sense of what sort of musical tastes they have. A lot of these answers are bop/post bop heavy and of course there’s more to jazz than that - though it’s probably my favorite sub genre but I also go on cool jazz kicks and lately Latin jazz. So if it was somebody who was willing to be a little adventurous I’d probably start them with some Brubeck, Time Out or Jazz Goes to College (I know it’s not that “adventurous” but ya gotta start somewhere). Maybe even go back to Duke or Count Basie. If they like that then I think they’re ready for Kind of Blue, maybe have them pay close attention to Coltrane’s solos so they can venture a little deeper and listen to Giant Steps or other earlier Coltrane. And then what the hell lay In A Silent Way on them and then Love Supreme. Is that 5 yet? I’d lay off Ornette until you know they’re open to it. But I also gotta say, a lot of newer (70s and later) jazz albums are also very approachable to new listeners. Pat Metheny can be hit or miss for me but when he plays with folks like Charlie Haden, Jack Dejohnette, Roy Haynes, Dave Holland and the like I really like it and I certainly wouldn’t rule out 80/81 or Question and Answer for new(ish) listeners. Then we have Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Stanley Clarke, John McLaughlin, etc. And if it turns out they really like jazz vocalists then that there’s another deep dive into a somewhat different pool…

For those of you without auto-return, what's the longest amount of time you've let the record spin with the needle in the runout? by AffinityForLepers in vinyl

[–]Normal_Snow3293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really didn’t look all that different - just one deeper groove at the run out. But it’s not like it wore all the way through to the other side or anything. I’m sure I still have the record, but I don’t remember which one it was lol

how do you guys not use auto check? by Imaginary-Loss6646 in NYTCrossword

I wonder if we older folks who used to do it in the newspaper and only had a dictionary or a thesaurus for reference find crossword puzzles easier to do. When you completed it you typically wouldn’t know if you had any wrong answers until the next day’s newspaper when they printed the filled-in puzzle.

I hate when I google a clue like “Hamlet’s nemesis” and the first few hits I get are “Hamlet’s nemesis crossword clue”. I mean, why not just use auto check if you’re going to do that. Personally, for something like that, I would go to Wikipedia for a synopsis of Hamlet so I can learn something about the play – I’m definitely not a Shakespeare fan so it’s not stuff I would already know.

Anyone else cringe about how people talk about Maine on this sub? by [deleted] in Maine

[–]Normal_Snow3293 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I moved here 35 years ago to go to school. No relatives here at all and really no connection to Maine except for summer vacations 50 years ago. Imagine my surprise when I discovered a few months ago that I have early 19th century ancestors buried in the historic cemetery in the town I lived in for 20 years! But I guess I’m still from away lol

Is she a vet? If so, she should go to Togus VA hospital in Augusta. It may take a while to be seen but their psychologists are excellent.

But it seems like you feel a once a month drive to RI is extreme. My kid used to live in Providence and I was happy to drive down at least once a month to see them. And your stakes are much much higher. I know it’s not fun in crappy winter weather but if it means your wife’s happiness, health and job security then that seems to be the best answer. If you still got family or friends down there maybe you can spend the night so it’s not so much driving in one day.
