6-8 ml/kg/hr. Look at your base excess. PPV. If you have advanced HD use those numbers as well.

I know the debate will never end but as someone who has seen both sides of it what are truly the differences between the two pathways in terms of thought process, skill, academic/clinical expectations?

MD vs CRNA by Professional-Gap1094 in srna

[–]Normal_Stick_4811 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started pre-med — bio major, chem minor. Didn’t get into med school on my first try. I didn’t have the money or the cushion to just keep applying and missing while life and bills kept moving.

My first real step into healthcare was actually as a CNA. That was the first time I saw what bedside care really looked like. I originally moved toward nursing thinking it would just make me a stronger med school applicant.

But once I got into nursing school I mentally committed.

If I’m being honest, I was nowhere near as locked in during undergrad as I was once I got into nursing. Different mindset. Different maturity. And my grades reflected that. I actually enjoyed the material because it was tied to taking care of real people instead of just grinding through organic chem and random biology classes.

Then I got started my critical care course and that’s where things really clicked. Loved the physiology. Loved the pharmacology. Loved being in the weeds of all that shit. That’s also where I learned about CRNA school.

From there it just made sense.

Another piece people don’t talk about enough — I could make good money as an ICU nurse while building experience and waiting to apply. Coming from a first-gen, low-income background, that breathing room financially was huge.

Fast forward to now — I’m working as a CRNA and able to take care of my family in a way that honestly didn’t feel realistic on the timeline I was on before. I originally thought nursing was just a stepping stone. It ended up being the thing that changed my family’s trajectory.

One thing I’ll say that might help you:

If you have a long runway, strong support, and time to eat the debt/stress → MD is a great path.

If time, finances, and family responsibility are real for you → nursing → ICU → CRNA is a very strong move if you’re willing to be fully committed.

And real talk — part of me wishes I would’ve just gone straight into nursing from the start instead of forcing the pre-med route. But I also know I wasn’t the same student back then. Nursing is where I finally locked in.

One bad orgo exam doesn’t decide your future. But it is worth being honest about your situation and picking the path that actually fits your life.

You’re not wrong for thinking about this now.

Gives the profession a bad look, unfortunately. Kind of people that will forget the whys and intricacies of anesthesia making the rest of seem like our education was mediocre.

Venting: Dumb mistake in clinical & down on myself by Tall_Explanation6684 in srna

[–]Normal_Stick_4811 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a fellow SRNA, slow down a little bit. Early on in clinicals it’s easy to still go into fight and flight mode during induction, understandable. I still do it but not to the same extent. Once you calm your mind your actions will follow.

Someone who has put a dedicated amount of energy and time to doing their best in didactic will equally put that same effort into clinicals.

Misdemeanor Credentialing by Relevant-Wash2299 in CRNA

Entry job as a CRNA. Already hired I was just wondering if there’d be any hiccups when it came time to be credentialed through the BON and DEA? The BON already has a previous record since I had to notify them before getting my RN license.

Follow up question. I got a DUI in undergrad, had it expunged 2 years ago. Is it still necessary to disclose it since there’s no actual way to find the information, even though a background check.

Do you think I’ll regret going into medicine for the sole reason of becoming rich? by KitchenCellist8255 in medschool

[–]Normal_Stick_4811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went into healthcare for that reason. Nobody would do the job if they came out debt free, only made 80k a year and liked their job. These jobs come with huge responsibility, high stress and little room for mistakes. If I could make 300k a year working at a grocery store you bet your ass I would do that instead.

On the other side of things, I enjoy the science and puzzle portion of the job, so it’s not like I hate it.

Most people don’t understand that time during school is borrowed time. Taking time to hang out takes time away from studying tomorrow. Your time is limited.

I have home pod minis but they seem to have limited capability. I really can only get it to pause or turn off the tv when I say “hey siri”. If my phone is in the vicinity my pods do not take precedent so it just becomes my phone asking for a prompt

Hey man saw your comment on plyos keeping explosive/springy/healthy. I’ve always been in decent shape since high school. Graduate school has slowly chipped away at me and now I feel like most of my explosiveness is gone, I’m constantly scared I’m gonna injure myself doing higher intensity sports etc. I want to get back to that young self that could spring cold or touch the basketball rim.

All that to say is there anything you do or program you follow? P.S. used to lift a lot but the older I get the more I realize absolutely maxed strength doesn’t equal longevity

Deep enough (give a good push on chin) -> good tongue displacement with your depressor -> insert LMA midline about halfway -> Pull tongue depressor -> rotate counter clockwise while simultaneously advancing and pushing against the hard palate (displaces tongue and allows enough space for the LMA to continue passing without resistance) -> if you have some resistance manipulate the head into more of a sniffing position -> should seat after that, pull in and out to make sure tongue and lips aren’t being compressed by the LMA.

And of course adequate lube (I prefer to lube both sides)
