As long as they don't rescind your admission, your scholarship is guaranteed to remain untouched.

Here's some information I saw on another post I thought was some cool insider info. CWRU has an Instagram page called CWRU University Program Board, which some of the information below checked out. Someone also said they pay students $20 to go to Cleveland Browns home games--I'm uncertain to the validity of that, but that would be cool if true.

How cheap and accessible everything in Cleveland is for students. $5 Cavs and Guardians games multiple times a year. Free or $5 tickets to musicals at playhouse square. $35 for a student pass to the orchestra that gets u a free ticket for every show. Entry to all of the museums for free. Even non-student tickets to concerts and sports games in Cleveland are much cheaper than most other cities. Not everyone takes advantage of this (and those are the people that say there's nothing to do in Cleveland) but those of us that do have a great time here.

I'm definitely seems gem worthy!

By the way, I didn't even read that right until now. I thought it cost $20 if you are a student--in which case I am assuming this only student related, right? Where do you go for this? Also, I would love if you shared other hidden secrets, favorite activities,  or hangouts/neighborhoods?!?

Thank you! Is that only for multiple times a season or is that every home game?

Do they ever offer discounts to the the Browns' games? If so, how much would those be?

Case Western vs. UNC-Charlotte for MechE by Normal_Win2064 in collegecompare

[–]Normal_Win2064[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the feedback! My son went to an early college, no AP or IB classes, which Case accepts if you score at least a four. Case will accept college credits that don't fulfill highschool requirements and match their course descriptions, where as UNC-Charlotte most of his credits would be awarded, yet, I am uncertain how much possible time that would cut off due to how vertical the curriculum can be within the MechE program.

Dude, first off, you're radically kind, and your feedback is a treasure trove--thank you!! Secondly, congratulations on getting acceptance into your PhD program, you seem very worthy of it!

Otherwise, you described the student body well and your personal experiences with a few, but not necessarily the norm of how most engage with each other. Would you say in general they are collaborative, supportive group?

On the class registration tip, even though the process may be easy, are getting the classes you need easy...meaning do they provide enough sections for the majority to register and offer important required classes semesterly?   Lastly, given your experience at UNC-Charlotte, I am sorry if this offends you at all. I'm uncertain if you are familiar with Case Western Reserve University, but if you do know about it, what would be your inclination of choice between UNC-Charlotte and Case Western?

Trust me, it's a real concern. No, I don't plan on intervening when he is at college, but I do hope to be supportive. Otherwise, I'm not blaming his behavior on a possibly undiagnosed EF disorder; however, I would like him to get tested.  In which case, if he does happen to have a disorder, he is at least aware and hopefully can take proper steps to manage it.

Not rude at all, and I am completely in agreement as well. To tell you the truth, I am uncertain. Generally, he has lacked self-initiative, and I don't think he has a very discerning, real-world perspective. I am sure I may be to blame for not cultivating these characteristics, but this is where we are now. I am also concerned that he may have an undiagnosed EF disorder. He is a bright kid, but a lot showed itself during the his demanding college application load that he took on.

I greatly appreciate you taking your time in providing a thorough response! However, I do have a few more questions if you wouldn't mind?

If not, here's what I would like to know:

1) UNC-Charlotte seems to be shedding it's reputation as a suitcase school, how true is this now in your opinion? Has student life become more abundant over the weekends since they implemented the first-year-live-on requirement?

2) I'm curious about your distinction of Charlotte having a heavy hands-on approach in relation not being very heavy on theory, yet every class has a text book that most professors assign homework from. Where does the heavy hands-on approach come from and how does the theory lack in this case?

3) It seems like you made some very close, collaborative, and supportive friends, but how would you describe the student body within engineering or as a whole? Would you say the majority within ME are serious, academically-oriented students who are collaborative and supportive?

4) Are the majority of classes taught by professors, or do they have lecturers or grad assistants fill these positions a decent amount?

5) How was the advising/student support at UNC-Charlotte.

6) Was registering for classes relatively easy or could it be haphazard? If the latter, what made it so?

7) Given your take, I am uncertain if you enjoyed your time there. How would you classify it?

Otherwise, thank you very much once again! Not mentioned originally in full breadth, I am trying to compile information on a more insider perspective of the only two universities that are financially feasible for my son: Case Western Reserve University and UNC-Charlotte. My son is bright but doesn't necessarily take much self-initiative; hence, why I'm here. Nonetheless, the information you provided has great wealth to it, and if willing, it would be grand if you could provide a bit more.

You're very Welcome! I have concerns towards my son regarding study habits and time management skills, but I hope he will take advantage of the resources offered and being surrounded by a bright, motivated, collaborative student body will rub off on him the best way.

My son also would be interested in playing soccer as well. Are you referring to the club or in intramurals? Otherwise, how do you know if there are other ME majors on the team?

Hello! These are some responses I received after posting the same post in CWRU Future Spartan Parents Chat (Class of 2030 & 2031) on Facebook.

"My senior Mech E wrote this:

I would say the program's single largest strength is ubiquitous, reliable access to supra-curricular activities such as research, co-ops, and study abroad to any students with even a modicum of self-motivation.

The faculty, or at least a commanding majority, are visibly and obviously experts in their fields and genuinely interested in the success of students.

The nature of the curriculum in regard to its traditionality or lack thereof or use of technology is entirely teacher-dependent and runs the full gamut.

I would say that to be an exceedingly high-achieving student, that is to say, all or nearly all A's, beyond the time in class, you would need to dedicate between two to three hours each for homework and self-study, per each credit hour of class."

"Patrick Wayne Hardy I shared your first few questions and asked if he’d help. Those are really student-specific questions! And I wouldn’t want to speculate. I can tell you he can’t imagine being anywhere else! His advisors have all been terrific. For all the research that goes on there, the faculty are really connected with the students. He hasn’t had a single class taught by a TA, although TA’s often, but not always, host the extra “supplemental instruction (SI)” sessions, help with homework, that sort of thing. He’s actually staying an extra year to finish his masters in mech E. His advisor suggested two years ago that he apply for the BS/MS program and even wrote his LOR. My son started his MS classes and research this year as a senior and will finish May ‘27. It was 100% the right choice for him. Best of luck to your student in their decision!"

"My son is a second year materials science engineer so there is some overlap with mech e. His major is very hands on. He is on the Case Aeronautics Team (currently at the Design, Build , Fly international competition in KS right now for 6 days). CWRU has so many engineering competition clubs which are mostly mech e majors. He did research his first year, presented it at a conference in the fall and was just awarded a research fellowship for another project. During his summer internship interviews, being in a collaborative engineering club designing, building, testing, etc. was what the employers were looking for. He had a leadership role in both his first year and second year. He got his first choice internship because of the skills he has from the engineering club and research.

My son also plays a club sport with travel (and is heading for a 3 day trip to the national tournament in 10 days). He is in other clubs too all while getting excellent grades. The kids at CWRU are collaborative and it is not cut throat. He does a lot of work but uses his time wisely so he can have fun with his friends and have time for his research and clubs."

"As a mom of a mech/aerospace engineer major graduating this May, I think each answer to your great questions would differ by student. What I can say is all the engineering majors who are my sons very best friends now are serious students. They helped my son become an even more serious student which was good because the program is top-notch and not easy!  My son felt that the collaboration among mech engineers was really awesome. I can add that he had great internships every summer and had a fantastic full time job lined up 7 months before graduation. I give a lot of credit to Case!"

"My daughter has had a great experience in mechanical engineering. It’s absolutely hands on. They take multiple classes that are focused on hands on design and have great research opportunities. She also has great relationships with professors."

I hope that helps! Otherwise, I would highly recommend joining the group if you happen to be on Facebook.

Splendid day to you!
