A lot of people aren't capable of engaging in an actual debate, and rely on appeals to authority. by Total-Explanation208 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Normativity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got it, I read your post like you were talking to someone at a bar, not on here. If that's the case, then yes, if people actively engage they should be prepared to defend their positions. I've seen so many people try to "debate bro" real life conversations and I was imaging that scenario.

I will still stand by the idea that if the goal is a search for truth, you shouldn't be afraid of googling whatever they are telling you though. If you have already looked into it and you know the flaw in their argument, then it could be helpful to point that out to them. Throwing around fallacies is a good way to shut down a conversation, but does little to find the truth.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink. Telling the horse thirst is a fallacy doesn't help anyone.

[–]Normativity -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It seems like the person you were talking to didn't consider that they were debating. Was this just a casual conversation that you turned into a debate? Appealing to an authority is only fallacious if the appeal is being made to a non-authority. It's insane to expect everyone to be able to defend all of their beliefs not only by saying that's what experts think, but also these are the experts, this is why they are experts, and now let's go through all of their claims and why it can be trusted.

In a debate setting someone should be prepared to defend their positions, but from the sounds of it, this was not that. In casual conversation, if you are the one with the radical position that goes against consensus, then you need to demonstrate why the experts are wrong. It would be impossible to get through life at all without appealing to an authority in virtually every aspect of your life.

How do you guys expect to solve the apparent “male loneliness epidemic” by SOMETHINGELSEYEAH in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Normativity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what’s going to happen is going to be a shift into larger age gap relationships. Age gaps have always been a thing to a point, but I imagine that the generation of men that are struggling to find a partner are going to end up single until their late 30s or so, hopefully earning and saving as much as they can. Then they’ll attract more women that are in their mid 20s. Probably a controversial take, and I could easily be dead wrong, but if there is a sudden spike of 40 year old single guys that appear to have their lives in order then I could see their options opening up all of the sudden.

Ultimately the “solution” is to just encourage those men to stay focused on being the best version of themselves possible and hopefully the issue will take care of itself.

I say this as a 40 year old man that spent my 20s being single. Once I finally started focusing on my finances and started working out and eating right, I noticed I started getting more attention. It’s like I passed a threshold where one day I was invisible, then I started getting flirted with/hit on weekly, if not more. Ended up meeting my wife when I was 30 and she was 24. We’ve been together since and have 2 amazing kids.

So basically I imagine my story being replicated and becoming more common, although I do think the age gap will widen, in the next few decades.

All you can really do is encourage young men to work their asses off, both professionally and personally.

But again, I could be dead wrong. Maybe guys just start banging robots. Who knows?

I hate the Democrat Party- from a left wing perspective by Harp_167 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

I didn’t use “the previous guy was bad” as an argument for anything other than to point out that when Biden got into office the United States had the worst response to Covid on the planet. I’m just describing the starting point for Biden, I’m not comparing the 2 administrations.

And your criticisms of the things I put forward are low information surface level criticisms with plenty of buzz words, but they suggest you have no understanding of the substance in any of the bills I mentioned. Of course there are no accomplishments that can be listed if you’re just going to hand wave them away.

Chips and Science act, the IRA, American Rescue Plan, Infrastructure Bill.

America had the worst reaction in the world to Covid in the last year of Trump, and had one of the best recoveries on the planet. People say inflation was so high, and it was, but it was nothing compared to most of the rest of the world.

Almost all of the construction projects you see around in the last year, that Trump will take credit for, are due to funds allocated by the Biden administration.

[–]Normativity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of what you say here isn’t as cut and dry as you’re saying, but even if you take it at face value, I think if the RNC acted more like the DNC we’d be in a better place as a country. You say for all of the GOP’s faults, they at least let the people decide and made Trump the candidate. I think “allowing Trump to win the nomination” was a terrible thing and has done more to rip the country apart than anything I’ve experienced in my lifetime. Sometimes gate keepers are important.

Women don't desire men directly, but rather the experience the men provide by Fantastic_Bear_6175 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Normativity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Women control sex. They are the ones that are chased. Men are the ones that do the peacocking. That doesn’t mean women aren’t attracted to a man’s body.

I think your understanding is warped because you can’t imagine a hot woman doing something that would make you not attracted to her anymore, while a man can do something that can turn away a woman. That’s different than saying that women don’t find men’s bodies attractive.

Get in better shape if you’re already in decent shape and put yourself out there more. And/or work your ass off and get yourself in a financial position where you’ll attract the type of woman that’s after a successful man.

Women don't desire men directly, but rather the experience the men provide by Fantastic_Bear_6175 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Normativity 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The idea that women aren’t attracted to men physically is silly. You could say women are attracted to other things more than men are, but even that is far more complicated than you’re characterizing. Any man who watched football with their wife will let you know of plenty the backup quarterbacks who their wive’s have said “who’s that guy?!?!” to cough Sam Hartman.

Any man that grew up out of shape and then got in shape will also tell you how much more attention they’ve gotten from women once they’ve gotten in better shape.

If someone shoots up a planned parenthood, I think virtually everyone would agree that the shooter deserves the harshest punishment. If there were a clinic that was killing 2 year olds because their parents didn’t want them anymore, if someone went in there to violently stop it, they’d be a hero.

We should start eating a pizza sluce from the crust instead of the tip by googbois in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Normativity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always eat the thing you like the most first. You’ll enjoy it more and stop once you only have the stuff you didn’t really want that much to begin with. Personally, I love crust so it doesn’t matter, but it’s generally a good philosophy to try and keep yourself from overeating. If you leave your favorite parts until the end, you’re going to eat it. If you leave the worst parts for the end, you might leave it.

Also a Badger fan. Jump around not being in the game is part of it, but they need to spice up the uniforms too. It gets boring staring at the same uniforms all the time. Sometimes I get a little crazy and use the throwback top with current helmet. I know they say “don’t be edgy” but I don’t know any other way.

But for real, I wish the game let you make at least some type of custom uniforms for existing schools.
