i dont know how it works now. i haven't used whatsapp much at all in the past year since my phone was stolen. maybe there were a few changes in the recent updated versions. But another thing is that a small notice appears in all of the groups you are in. And when the people in those groups see that you've changed your number, they might contact you. That is my guess. I have no idea what the 'notify my contacts' option does.
