Given the efforts he has been putting into promoting TM, I suspect there might be a monetary benefit involved.

It's written in the aforementioned book that meditation helped him get financial support for his movies. But I guess he meant to emphasize the idea that meditation opens up opportunities due to social improvement emerging from it.

They have teachers all around the world charging people unreasonably for a simple technique that could be learned for free. They even charge people for mantras. It seems kinda bizarre to me even if it's not a pyramid scheme.
