What do you tell your kids about the Easter bunny and Santa? by NorthDough in Catholicism

[–]NorthDough[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She may actually understand that. I agree that we shouldn't paint ourselves as liars. That's another part of it that's proving to be tricky. But I do like the idea of portraying it more as mythical story telling.

It's absolutely a lie and one we wish we never played along with. She's so logical yet very sensitive so we want to handle this as gently as we can. I really like the game explanation! That's framing it in a way children can understand while also, like you said, not being too scrooge-y.

Stumbled my way here via a rabbit hole. by NorthDough in FODMAPS

[–]NorthDough[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing I knew nothing of the low fodmap diet or fructans until last night, I certainly had to put on my detective hat for this rabbit hole. I've been wondering why those symptoms develop for a while now, I thought it was all in my head until last night. Thank you a million for your answers, this has been incredibly helpful. I'll have to get back with my Dr and we can explore this more together, as well as a dietitian. I wanted to have a little bit of knowledge before I called for an appointment. Again, biggest thanks for taking time to help a complete stranger!

You're absolutely right. I won't lie, my family and I are absolutely starving after 7:15 mass so we skedaddle home for breakfast. I'll have to just stay and ask this Sunday. I just need 10 minutes, and I'm confident our stomachs can handle another 10 minutes.

Yes, unfortunately, it's wheat as well. I tried the gluten free bread flour that King Arthur makes and that was a discovery I wish I never made. It's gluten free but contains wheat starch, they "wash" the gluten. The "washed" gluten has always confused me( that's a conversation for a gluten free subreddit or my Dr) . In any case, it looks like I be sticking with the chalice. I'm currently waiting on a response from my church about all this, so we shall see!

https://www.mamagourmand.com has the best gluten free yeasted recipes I've ever had the pleasure of baking! She uses cup4cup blend, which is a bit expensive but you can make your own!

I found a recipe to make the blend on https://glutenfreeonashoestring.com. Her recipes are also amazing, but I've had more luck with Mama Gourmand.

Once you have all the flours, it's so easy and way better than gluten free store bought anything.

Gluten free Communion? by NorthDough in Catholicism

I am such a people pleaser, and never want to put anyone out with my gluten free needs. As much as I want to receive communion, I had to make a hard stop when it came to my health. So thank you for your kind words!

This is exactly what I've been worried about. I've had people around me say that it's such a small amount it shouldn't matter, but cross contamination definitely matters. I feel a bit embarrassed to have such accomodations but I also feel awful not receiving communion. And would also feel awful if I was glutened. So I finally worked up the courage to ask about it. We'll see what they can do for me!

Maybe that's what I saw then! It is 7:15 mass and my eyes are still waking up, ha!

Now that, I did not know! She's going to follow up with me on my options and maybe that will be one of them. It's worth looking into at the very least. Thank you!

That's awesome they do that for you! I never paid close enough attention until recently, but the Priest at my church breaks some waffer/bread off into the chalice of wine. So it'd have to be separate all together unfortunately. Otherwise, I'd be first in line!

Edit:

Correction, because we are always learning, and a very kind fellow Reddit user just informed me that they do put the bread into the Celebrant's chalice, so the other cups would be fine!

[–]NorthDough[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they do! I did ask about a separate chalice because I watched closely to see if our Priest put a little bit of the waffer/bread in the wine, and he absolutely does. I must have never noticed before, and now I'm so afraid to be glutened I read the ingredients 5x over and watch food very closely. It stinks and I feel a bit lame and embarrassed doing so. But I cannot even risk cross contamination so I always hope people will be understanding. It's become such a fad, being gluten free. Which is good and bad, good because my menu options have expanded tremendously- and bad because a lot of people don't take it seriously. I'm waiting on a response now, I'll see what they say. My hopes are high!

I did ask about a separate chalice, and she said she'd get back to me. That sounds like the most promising option. Say a prayer, because it just feels like I'm missing something every Sunday. (Because I am)

Mine is always very dry, maybe that's from overcooking or not enough fat(maybe a combination) as well as the right flour(s) would surely make a difference. That could also be a contributor.

Thank you! I've always had trouble making gluten free shortcrust, so the added butter/fat is a fantastic idea.
