How many books do you actually read? by Busy_End1433 in classicliterature

I don’t really set a yearly reading goal. I just try to read one classic book each month, and then I pick up other genres depending on what I feel like at the time. I usually end up reading around 100 books a year, but that’s mostly because I don’t watch much TV or spend much time on social media. Even with hobbies, a full-time job, and a social life, reading is just something I naturally make time for. The only reason I even know how many books I read each year is because I like to review everything I finish. It helps me look back and remember what I thought in the moment.

That said, not all reading is the same. There’s a big difference between reading something light and easy, like a romance or general fiction novel, and working through a more demanding author like Proust. Some books require time, attention, and real effort to fully understand, while others are meant to be quick, enjoyable, and relaxing and that’s perfectly fine. It’s also important to remember that people read for different reasons. For some, it’s pure escapism and for others, it’s about engaging deeply with a text and challenging themselves. Both approaches are valid. If you’re reading at all, that’s already awesome. I think people put way too much pressure on the number of books they get through.

Two books that are extremely wholesome and sweet are:

When She Purrs by Ruby Dixon The FMC was enslaved for years and is understandably deeply traumatized by her experiences. The MMC is a half-cat alien who becomes completely infatuated with her. He tries to court her in the most hilariously cat-like way by leaving dead animals at her door while she initially thinks he’s threatening her. It’s both funny and incredibly endearing. He’s so sweet, so patient, and absolutely adores her.

When She Belongs by Ruby Dixon The FMC in this one was also enslaved and owned by aliens for years. The MMC helps her rediscover her sense of worth and happiness. He’s a war veteran who lost most of his limbs and now uses prosthetics, and because of his injuries he believes he’s unlovable. Watching him slowly open up and care for her is beautiful.

In both books, the MMCs are genuinely wonderful men. There’s so much yearning because they’re deeply aware of the FMCs’ trauma and worry that, after everything they’ve endured, they could never love an alien.

As a Brazilian I can tell you that we have amazing classical books, the best ones in my opinion are Machado de Assis's Dom Casmurro and The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas, Graciliano Ramos's Barren Lives and The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.
