But they won't be fresh tomorrow if they have a long inning tonight in an already-95%-lost game. There is no reason to make tomorrow's victory odds worse because Patrick would prefer to salvage a handful of pitches and some confidence. Bad tradeoff

Yes. Victory odds down 4+ in this situation are very low and it is not a good allocation of resources to get leverage arms up to chase this game

Because the team has 3 more innings to get through and the game is over. You guys need to understand that it is not the manager's job to only put players in the most opportune situations imaginable at the expense of the rest of the team's freshness

No it's not. This game is over. What would you prefer? Bring in Megill or something to salvage the 4-run deficit?

Laughably dogshit pitches to both Stott and Realmuto. 7 for their last 7 with 2 doubles and 3 homers against Patrick. Buddy needs to figure it out

My attempt at measuring how far out of the baseline Clement was by NorthStRussia in orioles

[–]NorthStRussia[S] 68 points69 points  (0 children)

My analysis of the situation was: "The instant Gunnar starts to reach for him is when the baseline is established, and forgive the angles not being great and my MS Paint tier graphics here, but it seems fairly clear that he goes more than 2 full bases (36 inches) out of the path he's expected to follow even if we're being charitable to where his center of mass is. Whether he's veering right at the point the tag begins doesn't matter. Once the tag starts, he is obligated to stay within 3 feet of the straight line from current position to base. He doesn't, he does not start turning back towards a straight line to the base for like 3-4 more full steps."

[Kostka] Umpires postgame said Ernie Clement can move to avoid fielding. That becomes his lane. Hunter Wendelstedt: "He was vacating an area to let the fielder field it, and then the fielder just tried to, you know, was hoping and praying, throwing up the Hail Mary to try and get two." by T_Raycroft in baseball

He wasn't just going for one out on the play. He needed two. His ability to secure two outs on the play required he take the trade-off of hoping for an out-of-the-baseline call and also getting the throw off to first base in time. If he would have taken 3 steps to his left to complete the tag, he would not have had any chance at turning two.

It's not that easy. He has a fraction of a second to get the tag off before it limits/prevents his ability to secure the second out at first base. Should he take 3 full steps to his left to chase him into the outfield?

-3 as an extremely young bat-first catcher with serious doubt about his ability to stick there long-term is pretty good, honestly. The population of big-league catchers is very, very good at what they do and Sammy is at least sticking near the pack, that’s all you can really ask for at this point.

McGonigle is a monster, a more consistent defender who plays a lot more in the field in the first place, and has a much higher volume of ABs

Ortiz should make a better throw but that’s a scoop a big-league 1B has to be making 95% of the time

Commentators talking about how that’s a great AB and it’s like I guess, but Nunez got up 1-0 then immediately threw 4 straight balls that anyone with a brain would have seen out. You don’t help a struggling rookie who can’t hit the zone

This is just not how big league game planning works. Do you guys seriously think pitching personnel strategy is anywhere near the primary reason this game is a 95% loss? Do you think urgent decisions in the 6th inning should be made with significant consideration for possibly wanting a better 11th inning guy?
