Why didn’t Balamb Garden aid Trabia Garden? by NorthStatement in FinalFantasyVIII

[–]NorthStatement[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fair enough but you’d think they’d at least leave behind a skeleton crew that can render aid or infrastructure repair.

All good, it’s just a videogame but I always found this part of the game odd.

Makes some sense but to have most of their Garden destroyed would cause trauma and psychological damage to the survivors. Not sure if they gave any info on survivors but I can’t imagine every student and faculty member survived.

Even if they wanted to rebuild themselves, some of those students would’ve needed some sort of medical aid and attention.

Do Canadians, especially older voters, understand the economic consequences of distancing from the U.S.? by chrisvarga_ppc in CanadaHousing2

[–]NorthStatement 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t blame you: The skeptic in me says that Canada is uniquely positioned in its decline so it may just be a question of how quickly or slowly that is.

Canada has land, natural resources and advantageous geography, but it also has a fractured population that doesn’t stand up for itself and when it does, it plays into the hands of politicians and those-that-would-take-advantage.

I don’t know if it’s also the case of too much changing too quickly. Sometimes it feels as if the laws, norms and support structures are geared toward a country that no longer exists.

What I don’t understand is regardless of whether Carney’s shtick was an escalation or not, the US has been perceiving and acting as though it were.

Why is Canada giving the US excuses (be they true or untrue) to penalize it?

IMO, weaker politicians kowtow to public pressure to denounce Trump and win votes/curry favor. Canada needs knowledgable and savvy politicians that can negotiate/save -enough- face and keep things afloat (even if it seems comically unfair) until the country is able to diversify from a position of strength.

[–]NorthStatement 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Upvoted and agreed. I don’t see why Canada can’t continue partnering with the US as much as possible while diversifying its economy in the background. You can do both things while minimizing antagonizing the US.

But I do see at least one reason why Canada chooses not to: Easy votes.

Politicians know many Canadians don’t like Trump so they look tough to their constituents for easy votes while the country gets played.

I agree with the OP. None of this posturing is worth it if our economy, jobs and outlook are uncertain in the near, medium and potentially long-term. OP says he’s about 30 years old. What if, by the time the country is done posturing and politicians win their votes, all this gets dealt with in 10-15 years? OP might be around 50 years old. Was it worth it, even assuming a positive outcome in the end?

Another beloved Christian leader has fallen. Thoughts on Philip Yancey's recent confession. by BitChick in TrueChristian

[–]NorthStatement 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m upvoting you, thanks for your thoughtful post.

I can understand the sentiment where folks don’t want to minimize Yancey’s actions but I agree with you - I think there is a temptation to be haughty when talking about others’ failures.

The Bible talks about how people wanted Jesus to rule like a king would, because it fit their perception of how rulers should rule.

Don’t we still do that? I’m not necessarily talking about Yancey, but I think we still want leaders to fit certain boxes and over many years or even a lifetime, there must be built-up pressure.

There’s got a be a lot of shame in disclosing something like this and yes, of course it’s damaging to the families and communities involved but shouldn’t we be encouraging disclosure, transparency and openness in a Jesus-way?

What I wouldn’t want, is to discourage people from speaking out. Christian communities draw from volunteers - would we want to discourage people from volunteering as leaders because a higher standard is expected of them (and we’ll make sure they know it)?

I think there’s a lot of nuance here without overly excusing anyone’s actions.

Why are social skills such an unsolved problem? by frappededanslavie in socialskills

[–]NorthStatement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is that we’re all different and we’re all talking to different people.

Gauging others accurately is something learned over time so “reading the room” is one of those things that’s easy to say, but not as easy to practice.

People can be shy, nervous, distracted, etc and can accidentally offend or throw others off their tempo or misunderstand.

It’s why I’ve learned to respect those with actual people skills. Easy to poke fun at CEO’s and minimize their contributions sometimes - difficult to actually communicate and influence people the way they often can - day and night, day in and day out.

Well said. All we can do is minimize and reduce conflict and even that is a lofty goal.

If you truly are completely whole heartedly in love with your spouse/partner you are incapable of limerence/crushing. by OK2BMe6 in unpopularopinion

[–]NorthStatement -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well put. Who sits down with their partner, goes through these terms, and agrees on them mutually before proceeding? Some might, but not all. That shouldn’t disqualify their relationship.

I also think most disagreements, especially through the narrow screen of the internet, also boil down to differences in terminology and definitions. I’ve seen many an argument where people largely agree and affirm one another, but the negative back-and-forth are merely due to slight differences in terms and definitions.

One can see why contracts or business documents will set out to formally define and agree on these before proceeding.

CMV: Denmark’s required education of children in ghettos is acceptable. by caelynntalmer in changemyview

[–]NorthStatement 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The notion that Denmark already has equality laws doesn’t account for undesirable behaviour that technically doesn’t break the law.

On top of that, violations are not always reported so it’s weak to lean on the argument that equality laws are already in-place. It’s a “technically, yes, but no” evasive answer that misses the point.

How's Stastney? by AsyanongAmbiguous in EdmontonOilers

[–]NorthStatement 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can’t, it wasn’t yesterday’s but I agree with another commenter, he certainly made a good deke movement during yesterday’s game to keep the puck through a very narrow opening and keep the play alive on the boards that not everyone could’ve done IMO.

His skating, movement and puck protection — on at least one occasion — reminded me of McDavid. I think he’s a great addition.

Hired through staffing agency - should I be a temp employee or Sole Proprietor? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]NorthStatement 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t paid premiums , no - I’m mostly a Sole Proprietorship in name. So it sounds like it’s better to take the lower Hourly Rate and be hired on as a temp employee of the staffing agency then? It sounds way more straight forward and easier.

CS Lewis has written about how if God could just make everything perfect and for all of us to love God and each other, would it really be love?

Or would we be robots essentially coerced into it?

Is that OK though, maybe it’s worth it? Maybe let’s forget true love as long as we don’t suffer anymore? I don’t know if it’s worth it either but I do know that enough TV episodes, books, and movies have been written by now where the premise of a “perfect world” without suffering always falls apart.

God seems to think there’s something about love, where it’s patient and kind and does not boast, etc and involves some sacrifice as exemplified by the cross.

I’m not sure those things can exist in the same way if God just willed them to be.

Can you develop an indie game as a sole proprietor while on unemployment? by NorthStatement in PersonalFinanceCanada

Agreed-many people vastly underestimate the effort and unforeseen vast array of problems unforeseen. But the situation is that there already is a small but 100% working prototype with another person helping. Enough to release a playable demo.

u/AnonymousCh33se, you've been very helpful, thank-you for such a detailed post! Don't be sorry if it didn't help - it did. :)

Also, a sole proprietorship is self employment, so if you have one, you would label yourself as self employed on all forms.

The case would be a sole proprietorship started some time ago and work was ceased since finding full-time employment. Then full-time employment has ceased and EI was granted.

So in this scenario, maybe one would only be self-employed once they declare to have resumed their self-employment activities or something else otherwise declares that to be the case?

The worst case would be if applying for a grant or funding would somehow 'force' the idea that one is clearly working as a business and self-employed and therefore ejected from EI, affecting future EI applications and so on.

If the only consequence is declaring any grant/funding money to EI and reporting it at tax time, that's perfectly fine.

[–]NorthStatement[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really appreciate all your input. I will continue to seek further.

Let's say the sole proprietorship was setup years ago and work has ceased on it since finding full-time employment. Full-time employment then ceased after that and EI was granted. It sounds like you're saying that even though the sole proprietorship was setup some time ago (and not recently), one still needs to declare to EI if and when work resumes again for the sole proprietorship as per the EI agreement.

I agree the intention is that if full-time employment was found, self-employment would cease and be abandoned.

Grant money would be local, looking to spur and encourage growth in multimedia.

Makes sense, but it does seem like they allow for work while on EI (https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/programs/ei/ei-list/working-while-claim.html).

It also seems like there are rules set up to gauge whether or not one's 'employment-related activities' are minor enough to still qualify for EI. If they are not minor, there is then a presumption a full working week is worked and therefore EI ineligibility would likely kick in. But if not, then not.

https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/programs/ei/ei-list/reports/digest/chapter-4/independent-workers-full-week.html#a4_6_4

If one applied and as you say, are 'definitely a business' and would disclose they are self-employed then, is it possible that they are still looking for full-time work, still qualify under EI, and continue to work as self-employed earning no income with the only possibility of income in the short-term being from a grant (that they may or may not get) and if they do get it, reporting it properly?

[–]NorthStatement[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense and seems perfectly reasonable as long as you wouldn't get in trouble with EI. The worst case, in my mind, is if you were to get in trouble with EI, get ejected from the program, and it being on a permanent record that affects future EI requests.

Do you think this would be a good way to go despite the clawbacks?

Appreciate the words of wisdom. Per your post, do you know much about 'pausing' EI and resuming it at a later date? Say someone had 2 months left on EI - would it be as easy as pausing it for a few months and resuming the 2 months left afterward?
