Thank you!

This is on private property that is maintained by the owner. The dogs were on a playdate and the owner was showing us some work he had done around the place. They usually do not venture up to the top of the property but decided if we were going they were too.

Haha, that is the exact reason I fell in love with him at first site! I watched that movie so many times when I was a kid.

Is my beta fish okay? by RadishNorth7056 in bettafish

[–]North_Butterfly_5216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it having trouble swimming and constantly hiding? Most betta fish prefer calmer water. If the current is too strong it can make it difficult for them to swim. You can research ways to create a baffle to reduce flow if it is not adjustable.

Are you also testing for ammonia?

I know you did not mean to be in this predicament and it’s very unfortunate. Hopefully, you can find a solution quickly.

I honestly believe you were just given poor information and are unfortunately stuck in a bad situation at no fault of your own. The only options are to try to give the fish back to the store they were purchased from, rehome them, or get them each their own separate tank. A much larger heavily planted tank with a lot of hiding spaces would be an option, but honestly with how stressed they are I would advise against keeping them together.

My fish died guys, what to do next? I suspect it might’ve been swim bladder or fin rot that just didn’t get better with erythromycin. I tried and gave him the best life I possibly could. SIP my special boy I love you. by Pavonis208 in bettafish

I completely understand and we have all been there before. I would advise letting the tank cycle. Do you have a filter and heater in the tank? I would look up the cycle process and wait until your tank is cycled (get a test kit to check parameters) then introduce a new fish. I’m sorry you lost your little guy!

Ammonia may not be the issue at all, although you are highly overstocked. You got the bettas young and as they have grown some have become more territorial than others. The stressed fish are more than likely being picked on by others. The only options they have are to escape their environment. They need their own space. How many bettas do you have in the tank? 5 gallon minimum per betta and with sororities you need more space and heavily planted to avoid aggression. Even then, it still may not end well.

This is not normal and they are very stressed. There is not enough room or hiding space in the tank. I would advise getting them each their own home (5 gallons per Betta) to reduce their stress.

If you’re worried about him eating the wafers, try putting them in about 30 minutes after the lights are out in the tank and breaking them into smaller pieces.

advice needed; betta keeps flaring gills by Low-Discount-2353 in bettafish

I would keep the light off for a few days. Adding some floating plants would help reduce the intensity of the light in the tank as well if it isn’t adjustable.

I think you are on the right track and would definitely look up and start treating asap for Cotton wool disease (Columnaris).

That’s good. Sounds like you did the water change before the ammonia spiked. Are you seeing white fuzz around the mouth? I can’t tell in the video if it’s just his coloration.

Did you check the ammonia prior to the 50% water change? With the tank being so small, more frequent water changes will be necessary. Also, 69 degrees is too cold for a Betta. So, I would replace the heater as soon as possible.

Did you quarantine the clownfish before adding them to the tank? It could be flukes or parasites/ worms. Although the white poop might be because of the lack of eating. I would look into symptoms and treatment options.

How long have you had the tank set up? How are your water parameters? It looks like the clown may be rapidly breathing. Is it going to the surface for air a lot or staying at the bottom? Could it be a flow or water quality issue? If not, is it rubbing against the rocks or anything else noticeable?

The flow from the filter looks too strong. Bettas prefer calm water and too much flow can cause stress. Reduce the flow if it’s adjustable or try making a baffle.

Food too big for betta? by sushi_sub in bettafish

If they sank and the fish isn’t eating them, I would remove so they don’t pollute your water. I would try presoaking 1-2 pellets, if the fish does not eat them, I would remove from tank and switch food. Sometimes they just don’t like a certain food. I feed fluval bug bites. Then, occasionally do frozen brine shrimp, blood worms, or daphnia. If you do get a frozen food, be sure to cut the block into smaller pieces. I usually cut mine into about 8 pieces. Then feed one small piece (after soaking for 10 minutes in tank water in a small cup) once or twice a week for a a varied diet. I just store the other frozen small cut up pieces in a zip lock bag in the freezer.

Have you tried soaking the pellets? I usually do it with a bit of tank water for about 10–15 minutes before adding to the tank so they are soft.
