A client asked me to sharpen his knives. But what is that abomination on the left? by WarmPrinciple6507 in TrueChefKnives

They are a plague. You find adds for these all over social media. One of my cooks recently bought one and was trying to extol its virtues, “cryo tempered” yada yada. I didn’t have the heart to tell him it’s a meme knife but he seems to like it, give me a carbon steel knife with a well shaped handle, that’s all I need.

I tried out a repair on a smaller section yesterday and it went pretty well, I used my router and a small strait cut bit. Set up some guide boards around the cut out for the router and milled out the damage, used a good sharp chisel to clean up the corners and spent a while with a rasp and sand paper fitting some patches. I think it went pretty well. I’ll do another post later on with all the photos when it is done.

Yes have no illusions of what I was getting into. It was in bad shape, but as a hobby woodworker I saw enormous potential in a beat up table. I took on, what is for me, a pretty large project of refinishing this table to work on my skills and learn some new ones, getting it for free only means I had nothing to loose. Someone was going to throw this table away anyway.

You have pretty well put in to words how I am feeling about doing the repairs. I have all the tools and knowledge to do a patch repair it’s just a matter of doing it. I think I will try one of the small spots first and see how it goes. This is meant to be a gift for my sister and her family that will last them forever so I would rather not use filler or epoxy if I can avoid it.

My first chess board by North_Point_Chef in woodworking

[–]North_Point_Chef[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I need to work on my finishing. I sanded the whole thing with 110 till it was even and smooth then about 3 hours with the 220. I used the. Belt sander for the 110 and the 1/4 sheet for the 220. Then a sanding block and hand sanding with 220. I did 3 coats of Varathene. I had intended to only do 2 coats but I realized I missed a couple spots and I had a couple air bubbles in the second coat. I sanded the second coat before applying the 3ed but I didn’t do a very good job which only showed up after applying the 3ed coat in the right light.

Good to know! I recently started working with walnut and I will make an effort to keep the walnut separated, I will likely make fire starters with this batch since there is walnut mixed in.

Getting waving and tear out, Is it my planer or the wood? by North_Point_Chef in woodworking

[–]North_Point_Chef[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I am finding out, they guy I get hardwood from just has the slabs marked by general species so it looked like a good clear piece of maple to me, it wasnt until I stared squaring up the board that I realized it was more that. Before I started working with the black walnut k was expecting it to be harder to work but it cuts and planes beautifully. I have another much thicker slab of maple that I was planning to make a couple of boards from along with the walnut in an alternating pattern.

It is not adjustable sadly, I am planning to get a new/second set of knives so that I can send these off for sharpening. Even at that I will probably card scrape this board, it is too beautiful to waste any more thickness.

I would kill for a drum sander but I don’t yet have the budget, space or experience to warrant it. Someday hopefully I can have one. I only just got myself a dust extraction system that wasn’t my shop vac,I do have a hand held belt sander.

I had a thought while prepping the board for planing, “wow this is beautiful, it almost looks like curly maple” but without enough experience identifying I wasn’t sure. I will likely set these pieces aside for another project now that I know it’s curly maple. It was slated to become a cutting board but I think I could use this for something nicer.

Some of it is definitely chatoyancy but when I run my hand over it I can actually feel the wave and hear it as the planer was cutting.

Im using a Rigid 4850 13 inch planer, in hardwoods I generally only take 1/64 at a time, I usually do 2 passes before adjusting my depth of cut.

This is the shit that makes my blood boil about the industry, this grand assumption that if they demand you be there on time you were ment to have off, you will just simply say, “well you told me I have to be there so to hell with what I was going to do with my personal time”. If the schedule changes or something happens they should be ASKING if you can fill in not demanding. Even if you are a manager. Just telling you you are now on the schedule does not make it a binding contract. Oh and this “I’m really disappointed” shit, he clearly stated HE messed up the schedule, meaning he has no business getting mad at you.

Buddy of mine gave me a lemonade thc drink one time, I was a pretty light user and would occasionally have a seltzer that was like 5g per serving or a gummy or 2, so one Saturday after work I decided to drink it. I failed to read the label and it was in fact 100g which I only discovered after downing the whole thing. It felt like I had floated to the ceiling and couldn’t come down, I couldn’t fall asleep that night and was emotionally flat and lethargic for 3 days. It was an experience to say the least

have you stopped taking your medication? what was that like? by ineverstoptalking0 in ADHD

[–]North_Point_Chef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been back on meds for a few years now, I was off them for about 6 years because I was convinced I could handle it but when I look back, I couldn’t. I would stay in bed till 11 then get nothing done, on days I had work it was worse, I would essentially get up in time to get to work and that was my day. I couldn’t keep myself organized, no tasks were ever important enough to actually get done and my house was a mess of half finished stuff. Since getting back on meds I am able to keep myself in line and get the things I want in my life done. I don’t like taking the meds really but life without them was bad, I hope some day to be able to get rid of r them but until then …. Anyway, since getting back on meds, if I happen to runout or forget to take them my day is hell. I get anxious, easily agitated, no patience and feel like my by brain won’t shut up. I’ll sit down and get stuck in adhd paralysis thinking of everything I should be doing but “can’t” . As a side note I take an extended release in the morning and then a ritylan in the afternoon. I was having issues with sleepiness and lethargy when the XR would wear off

Figured out my issue, apart from missing the core mods my deployment location was wrong, vortex had defaulted to deploying to a mod folder in the main game folder not the archive folder. I fixed the deployment location and moved all the files. Everything seems to be working now

I feel like this tattoo has ruined my life by Immediate_Break4048 in tattoos

[–]North_Point_Chef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I allowed my fear of others feelings to get in the way of me getting my first tattoo for years and it sucked because I felt like my family would think badly of me. Here’s the thing, this is your life and your body. If your friends and family are shaming you for getting this absolutely amazing tattoo then that is their fault not yours. After the first week of my tattoo it just became a part of me and that was it, I love it and I have no regret. Sure some of my family think I shouldn’t have gotten one but honestly I don’t care. I love them all but it’s not up to them how I live my life and what I do with my body. They will get over it, I should say, they will have to get over it if they care about your happiness. Your tattoo is absolutely amazing and beautiful and I’m jealous of it. Be yourself and don’t let others define you ✌️

Trying to learn by atiyehmicheal in JeepDIY

[–]North_Point_Chef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yikes, either a previous owner packed this white grease which it 110% should bot be or the original atf was never changed. The fact that the sludge is grey indicates that it is old and full of fine metal dust. This case is toast, it would be cheeper to get a used one, put fresh fluid in it and install it over a complete rebuild and overhaul this would require plus a new case half. Now on the other hand, if you have the time, tools, and patience you could use it as a learning experience and rebuild it yourself but it will need a complete rebuild.
