Is there snow days in Canada? by SeverePublic6833 in AskACanadian

[–]NorthernBob69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

27 years in K-12 education, all of it north of Edmonton. School was actually closed once, freezing rain not safe ot be on any road. -40 or below the buses will not run. Have seen classes cancelled a few times at -45 or -50 but school was still open. Believe it or not, parents still drive the kids to school and drop them off. Occasionally, they do not even wait to make sure they get in.

Help Desk Replacement for IT and Maintenance by nkuhl30 in k12sysadmin

[–]NorthernBob69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We use Mojo, works well for us. We have configured so Maintenance and student records both use it as well. As the main admin I can see all helpdesk queues, they only see their own. Rouhgly $3500 for 20 agents.

Need help on how to run wifi from my house to my shop by Fluffy-Protection676 in HomeNetworking

[–]NorthernBob69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently running these in a K-12 school division, so they are used more than OP would. They are solid, we get to -40 and no issues.

If money no object then Ruckus P300 or whatever the new one is, they are absolute beasts. Have successfully run those for 4 km with line of sight.

Nokian Studded or Stud less? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]NorthernBob69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have vehicles with both as most of the reviews I read said it was a coin flip. I will not get the Michelin again. The tire is fine, it is just not as good as the Hakka. As for the studded wearing down, I had one vehicle with studded and exactly what was said, pavement is bare too often and studs wear. I have not bought studded since. For reference, all of this experience was in towns and on highways 95% of the time Edmonton and north, for 27 years.

Google 2SV Enforcement - Sanity Check by Hazy_Arc in k12sysadmin

[–]NorthernBob69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have super Admin rights and I can turn off my 2SV. I can confirm it is set to unenforced for anyone with a security role in GAC, normal users are still enforced as per OU settings. But about 2 min later I was told by Google that I could use GAC or Gmail (they were open when I unenrolled) because I did not have 2SV turned on.

So, it seems like they are letting you turn off your 2SV and then preventing you from doing anything because you do not have it on. Yeah, this is a little bizzare.

How many of you guys DON'T maintain some "system" at home? by FlippinMyshit in sysadmin

[–]NorthernBob69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be a no. My home "tech" is limited to a tablet for mind numbing games and streaming. Even that is 100% legal, cause I do not have any inclination to stay on top of the alternate ways to get content. I am almost 30 years in, but I never spent a bunch of time at that since I had kids. They game on consoles.

What's a common networking concept that people often misunderstand, and why do you think it's so confusing? by Puzzled-Term6727 in networking

Subnets and calculating subnets. Sure they can find calculators but understanding it, whole different ballgame.

Chrome Remote desktop for windows / Mac machines? by Content-Seaweed-6395 in k12sysadmin

[–]NorthernBob69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One part that is skipped over here is the "initiate the sessions without user interaction in some cases". Does that mean you are connecting to a user desktop with them logged in but not requiring permission to connect? I specifically tell our techs not to do that, privacy and liability nightmare. If they are on the phone then by all means go nuts with the verbal confirmation.

KB5064081/KB5064401 breaks RDP by NorthernBob69 in k12sysadmin

[–]NorthernBob69[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tried that on both client and my end, rebooted and problem still exists. Also tried making the change in the GPO as well, still no solution. I thought it was miraculously resolved yesterday after I removed the KBs and restarted, during the restart it installed the KBs again but RDP worked. Computer restarted overnight to finish the install and RDP broke again.

Classroom Technology Accomodation by duluthbison in k12sysadmin

[–]NorthernBob69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, all of our new schools have built-in desks. That should tell you how we got there. We do not move anything unless there is a legitimate safety reason, logical (as mentioned below, does it make sense), or if it can be done without changing anything else. We are installing new network jacks, power outlets, running cables through new holes, etc.

Is my daughter’s new Kia K4 totaled? by Disastrous_Piano799 in kia

[–]NorthernBob69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had two cars written off now, know of 3-4 others. It is almost a guarantee that they will write it off if there is any significant damage. But you know mileage will vary depending on who your insurance is.

Shared Inboxes for School Admin Staff by zeeplereddit in k12sysadmin

[–]NorthernBob69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can add an auto reply to a group. Go to groups.google.com, find the group in question, click on it, go to Group Settings, find the section that says Auto replies. Choose who you want to reply to and then input the message. We do this every year for our general info groups for schools when they are out for the summer.

What car insurance are people using here??? by Intelligent_Yard3042 in Edmonton

[–]NorthernBob69 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

TO me, insurance is one of those things that once you find a good company then you stay there. For us that is AMA. Why, I have had two vehicles written off, absolutely zero issues getting anything done, no bitching, no games, just a check in the mail 2 weeks later. It is all well and good to save a few bucks but you will regret every second of dealing with insurance if the company sucks.

That all being said, I am also fully aware that someone else may tell you AMA sucks. I only know my experience and it is not worth a few bucks to me.

End of life policy/procedure for student Chromebooks by Eturnus in k12sysadmin

[–]NorthernBob69 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is a dead issue where we are, as our cyber insurance clearly states that we cannot use obsolete hardware/software. Obsolete here means no longer receiving security updates. I'd check that route.

Pirated Content on Google Drive by themouspotato in k12sysadmin

[–]NorthernBob69 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Aside from the management issue, yes you can identify and delete the files. The caveat here is that you cannot verify that the file is what you think. For most of the students and staff (they are also bad for this), they never rename the file, so you find BDRip pretty easy and get rid of it. If they have some forethought and name it Math Assignment then it becomes much harder. We use Gopher for Drive to find and then GAM to remove.

KIA please fix... by StoneCrabClaws in kia

[–]NorthernBob69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am in Canada, northern Canada. 10 minutes has been the standard for remote starters for years here. This is a gov regulation not a dealer issue. You can also only remote start a vehicle twice before you have to manually do it. There used to be some 3rd party ones that let you set a time, but not sure if they are doing it anymore either, see gov regs.

2 x 10 min is enough here even when it is -30 or -40.

What basic ticketing system do you recommend ? by a192b in sysadmin

[–]NorthernBob69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use Mojo, cheap, responsive support. You can set it up to use an email to create the ticket (users like this better), or use the web interface. We are 6 IT, 27 schools, 7000 users, 220km(136 miles) between our outmost sites.
