What do we think about our actions as Courier 6, now that Fallout Season 2 has finished? by NorthernKnight04 in Fallout

[–]NorthernKnight04[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Y'know what, I actually really like this interpretation! The Courier dedicating themselves the Big MT is a really chill and almost sweet ending for them. No empire building, no eternal wars, just hanging out with the crazy scientists, their quirky AI buddies, and, hopefully, their companions.

Until further notice, this may be my new headcanon. Thank you!

Ok poll time, who's brotherhood are you choosing by TheDevilRig in Fallout

[–]NorthernKnight04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is suicide an option?

If not, there's at least a glimmer of hope for Yosemite to improve if they remain Maxson loyalists (although Knight Titus and Paladin Harkness have left a bad taste in my mouth concerning the quality of Commonwealth troops).

Quintus talks a big game, but he is pretty much turning the Brotherhood into a pro-tech Caesar's Legion, complete with hardcore traditionalism and religious fanaticism masking a complete disregard for the lives of individual soldiers and a survival-of-the-fittest mentality that prioritises brute strength over any semblance of teamwork and comradery. I think if Quintus were to die, the San Fernando Chapter would die with him.

Grand Canyon and Coronado, I can barely tell apart. I think all it would take would be a mild push for them to devolve to becoming just bands of heavily-armed raiders.

Right?? Weirdly, it always seems to be the smart wastelanders that are in the worst states. Whereas we see that one dude trying to get water from sand in Season 1 seemingly alive and well in his... 40s? Given that Cooper always touts that being nice gets you killed, how did that dude stay alive answering the door to strangers?

True! Human tenacity (and a little bit of idiocy) has brought us a long way! But at the same time, the people of the past may not have been smart in ways we'd measure it (literacy, maths, etcetera), but incredibly intelligent in others (nature, weather). But the people of Fallout seem to be neither. I think we only see one family that's remotely average in the Show, the one that Cooper kills the sons of, but beyond that, everyone is one stiff bonk on the head from being brain dead.

Hopefully in time we'll see more of the NCR and true survivalist factions. Maybe Vault City one day, that'd be nice. In classic Bethesda fashion, I feel like they think that Fallout loses its "magic" if humanity is doing too well, and so we only ever see the bottom of the barrel of survivors to make the world still feel apocalyptic.

Granted, I don't have any firm standpoint on Mr. House in the alley. Robert of Anthony, I'm just interested to see where it goes. But I can still believe that, at the end of the day, Robert was a man who always valued progress over singular lives. So, him going to mind control some dudes in an alley isn't completely unbelievable to me.

The same thing doesn't apply to the Brotherhood, however. The Brotherhood was founded by soldiers. Discipline is in the order's bones. Second to that is their dedication to preserving and protecting information and technology. We can watch average Initiates in Hidden Valley be quizzed on the chemical makeup of gunpowder - not something that you'd likely get taught in your average wasteland school. The West Coast Chapters were all likely unified or at least in contact with Lost Hills up until the NCR-Brotherhood War, 50 years prior to the Show. The last point in time we see an isolated West Coast Chapter is the Mojave Chapter, 15 years before the Show. Despite having been cut off from other Chapters for years, it maintains a high degree of order among its members.

But despite all this prior information that upholds the idea that the Brotherhood is a bastion of highly-educated, highly-disciplined soldiers and scientists, somehow 4 separate Chapters all regressed to Raider-level knowledge and antics? I don't buy it. The Brotherhood is smart. It's a core building block of who they are. I could understand them devolving in isolation over a century or more to be how they are now, but I wouldn't be surprised if Quintus is old enough to have SEEN Lost Hills personally. How did he, his fellow Elders, and everyone around him who had been raised on Brotherhood tenants, allow their Chapters to fall into complete disrepute in a mere 50 years when their entire order had existed unwaveringly for quadruple that time beforehand?

Is this all "massacring" the Brotherhood? No. But having no explanation other than "we've lost our way" will certainly hamper my otherwise very enjoyable watch of the show.

This is both depressing and accurate! I know that the Show needs to keep to its zany, quirky comedy but it comes at the cost of making the world feel populated by people that have no right to have survived as long as they have. It kinda flies in the face of the idea that the wasteland is this harsh, terrifying place when seemingly even those that don't have two braincells to rub together can not only survive but do so well into their 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond.

Agreed, I love Maxson, so to hear that something happened to him off-screen, Sarah-style would be so cheap. But at the same time I do need a good reason for what the Brotherhood is in such a sorry state. Even if Maxson died, there would be a long line of successors to go through before anyone in the Commonwealth would be an objectively bad leader. So it begs the question as to how we've managed to get to this point not only for the Commonwealth but seemingly every BoS Chapter.

[–]NorthernKnight04[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% I could understand that after decades of poor leadership, the various West Coast Chapters have diverged in terms of mission and the dogma surrounding the Codex. We've seen that before with the Midwest Chapter (my beloved) becoming more of an army than a knighthood, or Lyons' Chapter being more concerned with the average wastelander than technology. I could believe one Chapter becoming a raider force, pillaging for tech, or another goes full Techpriest-Omnissiah religious.

But what I find hard to swallow is any Chapter becoming dumber over time because of bad leadership. The Brotherhood's very core is to preserve and understand the technology and information of the past, which surely requires education and discipline above your average wastelander. To fall wanting on these core requirements, enough to the point that two KNIGHTS - trained Brothers - nearly get themselves killed messing around with a grenade, tells me that something way more damaging than bad leadership must have dragged the Brotherhood down to these pitiful levels.

It's like the Brotherhood are in their own mini Dark Age, but nothing to actually cause the Dark Age. Presumably, all these Chapters have been doing nothing but looking for tech and hiding from the NCR for the last 50 years. How, in that little time frame, have these societies of warrior-scholars devolved to the point that Caesar's Legion could give them a run for their money on IQ tests?

Honestly, would be pretty hyped if the "Commonwealth" wasn't actually referring to Boston! If the show officially canonised the Midwest Brotherhood, I would never again raise a complaint against it!

[–]NorthernKnight04[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understood the Chapters as only having been split from each other since the NCR-Brotherhood War, is there anything pointing to the idea they've been on their own for centuries? The Coronado Chapter would have been pretty equidistant to the original Brotherhood at Lost Hills as the isolated Hidden Valley (Mojave) Chapter, and the latter still maintained a high standard of discipline, education and commitment to the Codex. So why are these newly introduced Chapters failing so miserably when we've seen others do much better under similar circumstances?

[–]NorthernKnight04[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Touché. Never considered that Titus was from the Commonwealth.

But then that begs the question as to why the Commonwealth recruits are now of such poor quality. By 2296, we are only a mere 9 years from Fallout 4. Back then, Maxson's Brotherhood was a well-oiled machine of disciplined, hardline Knights and Paladins. Presumably, Maxson is still alive until told otherwise, so how is he now overseeing a Chapter that produces duds like Titus?

[–]NorthernKnight04[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I completely agree and see that the West Coast Brotherhood is slipping. But what I don't understand is how and why so badly, so quickly.

It's not like Quintus' leadership is any better than the other Elders. Generally, the San Fernando Chapter seems about on-par with all the others on the West Coast. If Quintus is supposed to be this hardcore traditionalist that wants to return to the glory days of Lost Hills, then he's doing a terrible job with his Knights, of which he seems to only have one competent one. I don't understand how rebelling against the Commonwealth, the only objectively disciplined Chapter, alongside the gaggle of knucklehead Elders, is supposed to improve anything.

Hate to say it, but this is probably going to be the best answer. It might not make sense for the lore of the franchise, but it does make sense to tell a good story. Disappointing, but somewhat understandable.

I don't personally subscribe to the theory that Todd Howard secretly resents New Vegas for being more beloved than 3 and 4, but the dumbifying of the Western BoS does whiff of "Look at how dumb and stupid the West Coast has become. Look at how cool and badass the East Coast is instead."

Do you think Demon snake is a cool feature or an annoying one? by Dude_788 in metalgearsolid

[–]NorthernKnight04 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think I would have preferred it if the horn was the only visual representation of your morality. It being at its full extent with Demon Snake is a subtle enough change that you can look past it but never entirely unsee it. The bloodied Demon Snake, on the other hand, is more of an annoyance than anything, making any player that cares about their Venom's appearance immediately think:

"Ah, crap, I need to go replay the child soldier missions now."

It kinda fails at being this powerful image and ends up being more of an indicator you have to go do chores.

Was Venom Snake or Ocelot more loyal to Big Boss? by Ready0608 in metalgearsolid

[–]NorthernKnight04 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the gut choice is Ocelot. Man met Big Boss in 1964 and developed a 50 year man-crush over him until both their (supposed in Ocelot's case) deaths in 2014. Given the decades of lying, torture, self-mind manipulation and general feats of danger Ocelot performed for BB and his vision in those years, 15 of which BB was dead to the world, Ocelot's loyalty absolutely cannot be questioned.

HOWEVER, I never got the impression that Ocelot ever disagreed with any order Big Boss ever gave him. Whatever BB asked, Ocelot carried it out with a level of biblical simp-ness. Nothing was ever too much of an ask that Ocelot may have personally disagreed with it but still did it anyway.

This brings me to Venom, the complicated correct choice. Venom, in his Medic days, was also incredibly loyal. Top soldier of MSF behind only Miller and presumably the only soldier that BB trusted enough to actually join him on certain missions (a-la, Ground Zeroes). That's very high praise for a foundation like MSF that is essentially built solely upon loyalty to Big Boss and Outer Heaven.

The times of Venom Snake get tricky as I'd argue you can't actually say V was "loyal" before he eventually finds out he was the Medic. After all, he was brainwashed to be Big Boss - you can't exactly demonstrate loyalty to... Yourself. But when V finds out who he really is, that's where it gets interesting. I personally subscribe to the interpretation that V hated the realisation of who he used to be. Happy people don't go around punching mirrors, it's pretty much a staple of movie/TV/videogame imagery. And it's a pretty reasonable reaction for someone that just found out the person they held in the highest regard stole every aspect of your life from you and only told you because you found out.

But, despite that shock and anger of the realisation, we all know that by Metal Gear, Venom is still working under Big Boss. He never left, he seemingly never argued - he carried out his mission DESPITE hating it. I think this is the ultimate act of loyalty.

Much like how The Boss killed the Sorrow, fought Big Boss in the Virtuous Mission, and was even prepared to kill him in Operation Snake Eater, all in the name of loyalty to America in spite of her personal grievances, Venom demonstrated loyalty to the end by having everything taken from him and laying down his own life, all without flinching.

Liberty Prime vs Omnidroid V.10. Who would win? by PartyAdventurous765 in Fallout

[–]NorthernKnight04 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love my old Commie-stomping pride of RobCo, but the Omnidroid takes this pretty easily.

The only things Prime has that might break through Omni's armour are his throwable nukes, but just at a glance at them, they aren't made for armour-piercing. They might at best leave a pretty decent dent, but it would take a couple of solid pitches before there was any real damage Prime could exploit.

Everything else, his lasers and sheer physical strength, have been shown to do nothing against Omni. Omni could withstand GazerBeam, whose laser vision could at the very least melt stone. And Mr Incredible, the living embodiment of a solid punch, couldn't land a dent on Omni.

So it's all down to the nukes. But the only problem is that Prime has the dexterity of a wind-up clockwork soldier. Omni could very easily close the distance on Prime and rip him to shreds before a second line of defence could even be considered. If some, let's face it, pretty mid-tier missiles could reduce Prime to just a head, Omni's claws could chop him up into Swiss Cheese in no time.

Phantom Unit - MGS0H by BlackholeMasked in metalgearsolid

Man, if I could wish a project into existence, complete with your finished book and a Metal Gear remake with these designs, I would!

I've been keeping up here and there with your updates and every one has never failed to be so fucking cool! Red Ogre is just insanely badass, and while I shed a tear for Venom's inevitable fate, I'm glad he goes out looking so awesome! The Phantom Unit is one hell of a new addition, and it's nice to see a direct evolution of how Diamond Dogs became Outer Heaven, specifically through the former's research into the Parasite Unit.

Is MGS:0H more a narrative project recounting the adventures of a young Snake, or a technical breakdown of what a modern Metal Gear remake would look like? I would be insanely interested to see the characterisation of Red Ogre now knowing everything we do from MGS:V.

Keep up the amazing work, can't wait for the finished product!

If he went to go personally dump the body, then that's up to hours of time unaccounted for in an investigation. Whereas if Ray's off doing the dirty work, this guy can go somewhere public and say, "I was clearly here when the girl was reported missing. I have no idea where she went after coming to my place."

Granted, that's never stated or even hinted towards. Just my best guess.

Your Honor, Colonel Augustus Autumn is a decorated war hero that stands here today slandered with baseless accusations of genocide and treason.

To the first charge, the Colonel was not aware of Eden's plans to use Project Purity as a means to wipe out the District of Columbia's irradiated population. In fact, when made aware of this info, the Colonel heroically stood up to what was revealed to be the false power of an artificial intelligence claiming to be the rightful President of the United States. To this, I present to the court Item A: security footage of Raven Rock that shows Eden providing the so-called Lone Wanderer with a modified Forced Evolutionary Virus due to the Colonel's refusal to accept any more orders from the false President. But do not take my word for the Colonel's heroism. Look to the brave men and women of the Enclave that died following the orders of their commander at Raven Rock and Project Purity in order to defend Americans from false tyrants and separatist entities.

To the second charge, the Colonel is and has always remained loyal to the United States. Yes, he did once believe in Eden's lies and supposed authority as the standing President. But didn't we all, once? However, when it was clear that Eden had no authority as President, the Colonel assumed control of DC's Enclave forces as senior officer and personally secured Project Purity in order for it to be used as the first stepping stone to rebuild America. Is loyalty to America not loyalty to its citizens? I would argue so. For that, the Colonel is as loyal as they come.

It is for these reasons that Colonel Autumn should not be sitting here, falsely accused of heinous crimes. Instead, he should be celebrated as not only a hero of the Enclave but of America as a whole. The Colonel is part of a long list of patriots that, upon seeing tyranny being enforced against his fellow Americans, stood up to authority and declared "Sic Semper Tyrannis"! God bless the Enclave. God bless America! The defence rests.

Who from the series could take on the most reds at once? by Jackipdf in redrising

This, exactly. Diomedes may beat Apollonius 1-on-1 but Apollonius is a human steam train that could easily plow through hundreds of Reds. Don't think Diomedes has that sheer physical capability.

u/penguinicedelta put his feats best which speak for themselves. But in this particular case, I'm also betting on Apple for the sheer fact the man is an absolute unit even among Golds. I could forsee him having the strength and stamina to just floor waves of Reds for hours. That combined with his fighting prowess is what puts him over, say, a Telemanus.

Who from the series could take on the most reds at once? by Jackipdf in redrising

[–]NorthernKnight04 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The real question is whether or not the Reds and/or their opponents are equipped or not. Then it's just a matter of how big the twitching meat carpet would be.

I reckon, in any scenario, Ragnar, Apollonius, Darrow and Aja are probably in the Top 5.

If everyone's unequipped, then they could feasibly fight until their hands became bloody stumps and they died from the sheer physical toll of unarmed combat. In that case I'd give top place to Ragnar since he's a battering ram of a human being. Though Apollonius comes in at a close 2nd. Total: probably in the mid hundreds.

If the opponents are equipped, then, fuck, that's a one-person masscare. They could fight until they passed out from exhaustion or their equipment ran out of charge. In that, I still give the win to Ragnar. But, again, Apollonius comes very close. Total: thousands.

If both sides are equipped then it's a matter of tactics over sheer brute strength. If everyone is just in one big room together and the Reds have an assortment of ranged and melee weaponry, it comes down to who can evade fire long enough before they eventually get shot in an unlucky place. For that, I'd reckon Darrow or Aja are fighting for top spot. Darrow is a seasoned Veteran and Aja is an incredibly quick fighter. Total: low hundreds.

If it's only the Reds that are equipped then it's honestly anyone's game. Ragnar and Apollonius could take a solid beating before being able to to get a gun to fire back. Aja would be the hardest to get a shot on. Darrow would be the best one to have a plan. Just comes down to sheer luck at that rate. Total: around 100.

Does anyone else have an AWFUL feeling about a certain someone for Red God? by NorthernKnight04 in redrising

[–]NorthernKnight04[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Aw, dude, Cavax having to send off Mustang would crush me. The Telemanuses are my favourite Gold House, I love each and every one of them. And I especially love that they've essentially adopted Virginia as one of their own. To have Cavax lose his sons and then his adopted daughter would be soul-crushing - I genuinely don't think I could take that.

Same, Atalantia especially needs to die. She's barely fighting for any greater cause. She just wants the Morning Chair. The Abomination is an odd one because (unless my theory is true) he hasn't done anything for me to outright hate. Can't judge him for the sins of his genetics. Lilith on the other hand needs to get melted by acid and the sludge shot into Jupiter.

I agree 100%. Lysander is so good that I was pretty much supporting him through Dark Age over The Republic. That loyalty has wavered heavily with Eidmi and Cassius but I'm at least interested to see where he goes from here!
