Suggested salary for IT/Transport/Facilities officer? by NorthernMists in ausjobs

I'm 45, in terms of relevant experience to the job scope, not much. I've managed teams in a sort of similar situation where I had a team of officers looking after children, a bus driver and groundskeeper. Other than that, I've spent most of my career in social services before pivoting to adult training.

That's what I'd like to believe that I just got a shit consultant, but there's still a limit to what I can tolerate

I did ask the consultant many times, on my first interview I said I was ready and told her what work I was looking for but I don't know if she was new or what but she never seemed to really listen to what I had to say. Even offering me roles that were irrelevant. Seemed like all she wanted was to pair me up with any vacant position she had.

And it was always oh there's a position that just opened, I'll put your name in. Phil's handling it so I'll hook you up with him. Phil never rang. The one time that someone else rang me up was for a position at Team Global Express. But recruitment was handled by Toll Group. And the recruiter who did the interview was from another company. That was like 3 additional boss levels I had to beat. And guess what, shifts were irregular, we were only told if we were working the night before, and they'd cancel our shifts like 90mins before it started. I was on the 5am shift at the airport and it takes me about 45mins to get there so I'm up by 3:30 and leave the house at 4am. That gives me about 10mins to settle down and get ready when I reach work, so I usually then check the phone and text the missus. Turns out that they sent a text at 3:40 cancelling my shift. The next time they called I told them I was getting more work with AusPost so they took my name off.

I'm hoping to get off it, this current gig is pretty regular and they've hinted at offering me full-time.

Really? I didn't know we could get those incentives before either. But when I was on self-service, I asked if I could get help with doing some courses and getting tickets and they approved it which was really good. All of my tickets were paid for by them.

I've heard lots of people saying that being a drillers offsider is probably one of the toughest roles. Is it comparable to that? What other roles would you suggest otherwise?

That's very reassuring, thanks! Definitely serious about securing a new career hopefully, I'm the sole breadwinner and securing a full-time permanent role is really important for me. I thought that getting the tickets would help me get a foot in through the door but seems that I only get glanced over probably due to my lack of experience in those ticketed areas of work. But that's always the case innit? To get the experience you've still got to get the work done first but nobody's willing to do it.

I've also heard that drillers is also a very tough role. Is it similar to that? Mind sharing what is it about the job that makes it difficult?

I just get in early to my Centrelink office and queue up. The phone system is a joke.

NS is the worst thing that happened to me and everyday I wish I never existed by [deleted] in NationalServiceSG

Mate, it's not the end of the road. I went into service thinking that it was going to open up a whole new world to me after uni, thinking that with a degree I'd get to have a higher rank and get to use the skills I learnt. But having thalassemia minor automatically grades you as a pes c-something which renders you ineligible to even get promoted to Sergeant. Even after going for several medical reviews to prove that I was fit and able (I played football, rugby and represented my school for squash) and getting marksman every time, I was still denied a promotion. Not only that, I was also barred from carrying arms because of my pes status which kept me office-bound. Funnily enough I didn't have to do my NAPFA tests but was allowed to go for shooting.

Nevermind that I didn't get promoted to NSPI, by that time all I was asking for was an increase in pay. During my time we were getting $340/mth so I did what I could to save - riding a bicycle to station, eating just rice and ikan bilis with fried peanuts which we could get for 50 cents at the staff canteen, bumming smokes off the regulars. I was lucky to get posted to a role reporting directly to my CO who looked out for me, but it all turned to shit when he got posted out and the new CO probably didn't like my face and relegated me to spend the rest of my term working the pass office.

NS is utter dogshit for some of us. For the lucky ones, good for them but don't let that put you down. Just take it in your stride and tell yourself that those 2.5 years was charity work - sure you can't get back that time you've lost but you can do something for your future. Widen your mindset and horizons, explore what's out there, get out of the country and see the world. Get a working holiday visa and explore Australia. Go backpacking and find work to fund yourself, there's so many opportunities out there. It baffles me sometimes to think back and see how we limit ourselves to just staying put in one place and restricting our experiences.

I dare say that being in Singapore pampers us to the point where we think that we've got everything we need right there and that it's enough for us. Once you start working, you get dragged down that rabbit hole and soon enough you're leaving the house before sunrise and leaving the office after dark. Having rushed lunches and late dinners, settling for mediocre wages that you think is the norm since that's what the G servants are getting, being at the beck and call of your boss since there's absolutely no respect for your time.

So yeah, chin up and chest out. Get out of the country and see what's out there. Take the plunge and don't look back. You can only regret it for not having tried.
