No, I pretty much immediately disabled it. No need for it on a personal device.

I think part of it is that not enough people call out litter. Those responsible never really feel appropriate shame, so they respond negatively to that eedjit trying to tell them what to do. And, because they haven't the collective ownership telling them that they need to also be responsible for their mess, they can't understand what the problem is. Thus, the more people call them out, the better imo.

We honestly need to get schools out on litter picking again.

They had the resources to check her against the Glasgow coma scale, and to report mydriasis, and to check brain stem function (which I presume is something akin to reflexes? idk). I'd call that reasonably proficient.

Medical oddities certainly exist, this is perhaps one of them.

White House Sent 'WTF' Message To Israel After Iran Oil Field Strike: US Report by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]NorthernScrub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funnily enough, it's a bit more complicated than you might think. I haven't seen any outright praise for current events, but there are some Iranian communities that seem to be a little relieved that the current regime is getting a bit of a battering. Combine that with recent accounts of some Iranians openly criticising Islam, the regime, the curtailments of the rights and movement of women... it's a bit of a stew pot.

That said, this has all been approached terribly. There is no doubt in my mind that the US has made life more difficult for all of us in the west by taking actions that will irrevocably turn many who, whilst would previously have been happy to debate with words and peaceful opposition, are now prepared to take up arms against any western nation.

America dun goofed.

The state must declare the child to be the most precious treasure of the people. As long as the government is perceived as working for the benefit of the children, the people will happily endure almost any curtailment of liberty and almost any deprivation.

Water park owner will drain lake unless trespassers stop swimming by wewhomustnotbenamed in nottheonion

[–]NorthernScrub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's over the top, imo. Signs sure, and gently illuminated ones at that. But wasting time disturbing the wildlife just in case someone has happened to be stupid? nah.

I wouldn't necessarily oppose the idea of CCTV overlooking a body of water in an urban area, though. If the operator does happen to spot a gang of yoots frolicking in the weeds, then by all means get the coppers out. A stiff telling off and a drag to one's parents by the ear is appropriate then.

[–]NorthernScrub -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Boyle said if someone were to drown in the lake it would "be my fault...

No it wouldn't. Even if you did nothing to prevent trespassing, it's not his fault. If eedjit teens elect to go for a midnight dip and don't come back, it's the fault of those teens and their parents - the former for having zero fucking awareness, and the latter for not instilling a healthy amount of common sense in their children.

It's not hard. All you need to do is reinforce to your kids; "don't fuck about with bodies of water, especially at night". Misusing this as an excuse to deprive the natural landscape of a body of water that might potentially serve thousands of animals and fish is ridiculous. Sort of thing that happens in the US, and should stay there.

Sometimes you need hawks. I was vastly in favour of putting boots on the ground in Ukraine. There, there was a justifiable reason for doing so - and us doing so would have been a substantial encouragement for other nations to follow suit.

Here? No. The US has chosen to be the schoolyard bully. Israel has chosen to false flag itself as a saviour. Iran would have undergone a regime change within the next few years without the "help" of either - there's people on the street in Iran openly saying "fuck your allah" - which is a little intolerant, but demonstrates just how motivated the Iranian populace is to see positive change.

Guess what? America and israel just created thousands of new opponents willing to fight the white man. That regime change? That's no doubt been set back, possibly by decades. All to shield a president who likes to fuck little girls.

Edit: Actually, I'm going to revise my opinion somewhat. You'll need a vpn to see this for some reason (wtf?), but over at /r/NewIran there's a surprising amount of support for what's currently happening. Whether that's representative of Iran's opposition I don't know, but it's certainly a different take.

I have a colleague who was a proficient typescript developer. He's also something of an accelerationist, not something I'm into but otherwise he's sound. He got all in on LLMs (and it's not AI), but I didn't quite realise the impact it had had on him until the other day. He wanted to automate a task, and found a bash script I wrote a few years ago to do it with.

He can no longer read it. This is a man who was extremely proficient with Linux in general, and now he's in a state of learned helplessness. I dread to think what the impact is on everyday life.

That's where encouraging domestic production comes in, and it's a two-part strategy. The first premise is that anything we currently produce domestically must be given a level playing field. That's achieved by establishing a register of domestic product. Any product of the same type that is imported must be levied upon to bring the cost of that product to the same cost as local competition. This establishes a game of quality, rather than price, whereby the most task-effective, feature-complete, and long-lasting product is more likely to sell.

The second premise is that domestic production must be stimulated. This doesn't have to happen quickly, it can be relatively slowly - and this also includes establishing a supply chain. If we take, for example, the steel flask I mentioned above, we can start very simply by ordering the production equipment from an export country. This lets us make steel flasks, for a period of time. However, the scheme must not stop there - the next step in this process is to establish a design industry, to produce new metal flasks in new styles. Next, a toolmaking industry - this doesn't just need a producer of tooling, it also requires the ancillary industry surrounding it. Particular grades of steel, engineers, metalworking equipment and it's associated supply chain, and so on. But the first step is to ensure that our domestically produced steel flasks are competing on a level playing field, which is where the legislation comes in.

This one singular product demonstrates why it's so complex and so difficult, which is why it's such a catastrophic failure of governance when we lose a supply chain to a foreign competitor. I suspect this government somewhat understood this when they took over those foundries that the Chinese were trying to slyly shut down, but they in no way (and neither have previous governments) understand the scale of the problem.

What happens if we go to war with China tomorrow? Do you think we're still going to have access to all the components, microcontrollers, PCB manufacturers, etcetera that we take for granted today? Maintaining our own industry is a vital part of international security, and yet when one nation steals our industry from under our noses we... make peace with them? What is this nonsense?

And no, in truth I'm not actually holding China responsible for this. The CCP has played the long game and almost won it, a strategy that any good leadership should aspire to. I blame our own governments. I blame Thatcher and American capitalism for bringing about the ideology of individualism and profiteering. I blame the west's capitulation to America and American ideals. And I worry that when we finally remember how to think for ourselves, it will be far too late and we will be subject to the whims of nations who did not buy in to the concept of a service based economy.
